kelossus
SOLD Item: JBL Performance Series Stack Location: Ipswich QLD Price: $2500 for the lot $2000 Item Condition: Solid 8/10 Reason for selling: NLR Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Absolutely fantastic pair of JBL speakers from the early 2000's, back in the days when JBL was still made in the US. The Performance series line was massively popular in the states and some what of an audio bargain amongst JBL enthusiasts. You get a large format 4-way with with the classic but updated LE14H-3 doing true subwoofer duties. The mid-bass and mid-range share the same magnetic assembly as the TOTL Revel's of that era. From memory this complete stack would have retailed at around 8k. These speakers absolutely thump and in some ways I prefer them to the newer JBL models. They go deeper then most of the newer JBL's and are voiced somewhat similarly to JBL's vintage offerings. Full-range bass with a hugely open and dynamic sound stage, mid's are smooth as silk. I can't help but smile when playing Dire Straits through these. No small format speaker can reproduce the weight and impact of a kick drum or drums in general like a big speaker. They can easily hit 110db without compression and fill a room with a tall and wide sound stage. These speakers can be "un-docked" and used as a separate pair of satellites/subwoofers bypassing the internal passive crossovers. They are currently set up for biamping via a Crown XLS2500 feeding the subwoofers below 130hz. The original plate amps died which is very common with the PS1400 subwoofers, seems JBL always struggled to make a reliable plate amp. The Crown is run just like any other subwoofer plate amp, run a separate pair of pre/lfe outs to it and set the gain. The Crown is most certainly superior to the plate amps and is the largest powered in the XLS range. The Crown alone sells for $400-500 2nd hand. All the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with Jantzen cross-caps and the bridging straps connecting the satellites are Duelund wire. Speakers are on castor wheels to allow easy placement and are lockable. Only two cosmetic blemishes worth noting. One of the tweeters has slight dimpling in the top corner, not major and I don't believe it effects the performance. Also the previous owner for some unknown reason drilled a hole in the rear of one of the satellites. I filled the hole with 2-part black epoxy putty and is barely noticeable now. I have all the original packaging, grilles and boxes for everything including the Crown. Total weight would be around 100kg for the lot and I would much rather a local sale but if you are willing to accept the risks of freight we can go down that route. Also considering selling my Marten Django XL's and have a look at my Canary preamp buried in the classifieds. A shameless plug right there. PURE-TITANIUM, HIGH-FREQUENCY TRANSDUCER DOMES With neodymium magnet structures, are ultralight to accurately reproduce lightning-fast sounds, such as cymbal crashes, yet extremely rigid to eliminate distortion and ear fatigue. ELLIPTICAL OBLATE SPHEROIDAL™ (EOS) WAVEGUIDES First developed for our JBL Professional LSR studio monitors, enable Performance Series speakers to evenly disperse high frequencies, creating precise stereo imaging over a wide listening area. PURE-TITANIUM, INVERTED-DOME MIDRANGE TRANSDUCERS Seamlessly complement the titanium-dome tweeter and offer nearly perfect pistonic motion that eliminates uncontrollable flexing found in conventional cones. The inverted dome is driven precisely at its center, which cancels resonances inherent in cone materials. The result is ruler-flat frequency response well beyond the crossover point. TITANIUM-ALLOY, INVERTED-DOME, LOW-FREQUENCY TRANSDUCERS Deliver precise, undistorted bass reproduction that matches the titanium tweeters and midranges. The powerful neodymium magnet provides its own video-shielding, allowing flexible placement near video monitors. Cast-aluminum frames remain rigid even at the highest volumes, avoiding distortion found in some other speaker designs. And aluminum doesn't affect the magnetic field, so driver movement is precise. UNIQUE DOCKING SYSTEM WITH ELECTRONIC CROSSOVER Combines separate satellite and subwoofer modules which are designed to integrate into one unit that performs as a full-range floorstanding loudspeaker system. Separate full-range speaker-level and LFE inputs reproduce the maximum bass information in both the full-range and .1 channels found in the newest digital surround formats. JBL uses Monster® cables for all internal wiring in Performance Series loudspeakers. LE14H-3 14" AQUAPLAS-CONE SUBWOOFER Is based on the technology used in the massive woofers found in speaker arrays at concerts, arenas, stadiums, movie theaters and other commercial venues that require woofers to play long and loud. The massive 4-inch edge-wound copper voice coil handles the highest levels of power with aplomb, providing distortion-free bass without excessive heat. FREEFLOW™ PORT ARCHITECTURE Extends bass response by coupling internal air motion to a computer-designed aperture that allows maximum air flow without audible "port noise". The result is powerful, room-filling bass from a modestly sized module.
