Crowson Actuators

Recommended Posts

Well, I got my Crowsons last weekend, and my Behringer arrived this morning, so I'll be setting it all up tomorrow!. I have a fan swap to do on the Behringer, plus I got to pick up some speaker cable connectors for the behringer from Jaycar (I didn't realize they didn't have standard speaker posts so didn't order them - I did get RCA to XLR cables, but missed the speaker connections...), and get it all installed and configured. I've got so much to do this weekend, projects and chore-wise...

Just an update. I'm into Bass Equalization (the BEQ thread at avs forum) and I was having issues with signal noise from the Behringer. Like a bad PSU. So it was injecting 10db of noise into the signal path with all devices grounded, and without grounding, 20db. And that is with the Behringer off, just connected to power. All on a Thor power board filter. So I ended up getting a Crowson amp. No noise. I don't know if I had a faulty PSU or what.

Also, I had both amps filtering at 40hz, and I'm getting a better effect from the Crowson. I think. Unmeasured, but I'm noticing more.

Just to clarify, if you aren't doing bass equalization, the Behringer is fine. The 20 db noise you can't hear. But, if you are equalizing part of the low end with a minidsp, even if not touching 50hz, the 50hz mains noise on the board, and you may hear it on your subwoofers.

BTW, I got mine direct from Oceanic Distribution. They were great, and easy to deal with. I don't know why no online AV stores here even sell crowsons. It is just idiotic. Try searching here for the gear.

Hey Mobe1969, curious how the setup is going. Was it worth the investment?

Oh yeah. Especially if you discover BEQ (see the AVS forum).

They are incredible and add a smooth seamless low end response. I used to think of my viewing experience pre home cinema and post. Then it was pre BEQ and post. Then I got the Crowsons, and it is pre and post Crowsons... Ever since I got them I've had to rewatch stuff id watched in the home cinema without them.. Some movies are just another thing altogether with it. Jack the Giant Killer was bowel loosening when the beanstalk sprouted for example... Even older stuff - like I'm in a Star Trek marathon at the moment, and BEQ and Crowsons has been an awesome enhancement to them.

They are a cheaper and more effective means of getting lower end without spending tens of thousands on subwoofers. Same with BEQ.

Thanks for the update, it is much appreciated. I always see Crowsons come up very highly recommended with the next step being dbox (which some don't prefer). I'm just not sure if around $3000 is the right amount to dedicated for my level of system but wanted feedback if the effect was worth it. I'm still running a Martin Logan Abyss (always like it as it responds to a lot more detail in tracks than some others subs I have seen) but this would be worth way more than that. Just wanted something for bit more extension and without annoying people.

Was thinking of an amplifier along the lines of Earthquake or Clark Synthesis (limited to lower frequencies). Some find the buttkickers a bit "unrefined".  Just cant seam to settle on any configuration. My 3.5 seater lounge with chaise is two parts so would probably need 1 in each section.

Sometimes a home theater setup can cause a lot of stress!

...or do you think get just 1 crowson that i put under 2 legs (two at the back in middle are only 2-3 inches apart) and a Behringer amplifier? Its a fairly lightweight fabric lounge..

If you want a behringer amp, you can have mine if you arrange pick up. I was just getting too much induced noise when using it with the minidsp. I've done the fan swap too so it is a quiet amp.

Yeah I definitely hear butkickers and earthquake are way more unrefined, from people who have tried all, but I've only used Crowsons and I have no complaints.

I've only gotten the two actuators under my seat the middle one. My wife doesn't care, and she still notices it. If you are doing it to impress more others, maybe get more... And when I've had others over they have noticed.

You are right on prior post though - it is a good way of getting the low end effect without the sound levels.

I'd definitely recommend BEQ too. Just watch the opening of First Man with and without it. Hoo boy... I think on the thread on AVS they have sample files for you to see the effect without the hardware investment.

A minidsp is so cheap in comparison. A couple of hundred.

I can't recommend Crowsons enough though.

Im also interested in getting some actuators . . . but just not sure how i would be able to set them up as i am already using all 7 pr-out channels to speakers and the 2 LFE channels are being used.  1 of them to my sub 1 and the other split to 2 smaller subs.

I run 6 subs and 4 crowsons off the .2 sub outs from the preamp

subs daisy chained and crowsons on other line😊
