Sydney Audio Club Meeting - Sunday 20th January 2019 - Reel-to-Reel & Cassette

Recommended Posts

Our January club meeting will be our usual January meeting where we have a system comprised of club member components.  We’ll be featuring reel-to-reel and cassette as well as CD.  Come along to enjoy some great music and great company.  And if you like, feel free to bring your favourite music on R2R or cassette.  Of course, you’re always free to bring the usual CD/SACD and flash drives for our BYO session.

Detail of the system…

Revox A77 Mark IV reel-to-reel (with Dolby B).  We will also have several reels of music (all genres), presented by club member John Way.  Refer to http://www.reeltoreel.de/worldwide/A77DolbyE1.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revox.

Our shiny disc source for our BYO session will be an Oppo BDP-105D multi-format player.  Oppo provided by club member Steve Polley.

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO.   Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on R2R or cassette if you have some tapes, alternatively CD or USB thumb/flash drives.  Sorry, no vinyl this month.  All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting.  We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played.  Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others.  Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.

For anyone interested in this line up, your welcome to attend.
The April 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company.
Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
This month we will have a system comprising of NAD and Tannoy provided by Audio Products (refer to http://www.audioproducts.com.au/) and Len Wallis Audio (refer to http://www.lenwallisaudio.com/). We will also have Scott Collins (Audio Products Marketing Manager) and Himal Jekishan of Audio Products in attendance.
For 40 years NAD has been regarded as a market leader in high quality affordable electronics. Today, whilst still producing excellent affordable models, NAD is now recognised around the world as the manufacturer of some of the world's most advanced digital audio products. At the club meeting, we will presenting its acclaimed Masters Series models.
From the NAD Masters Series, Len Wallis Audio is kindly providing a M2 Direct Digital Amplifier (2 x 250W) which has received many awards and accolades including a ‘Product of the Year’ award from The Absolute Sound. (Refer to http://www.lenwallis...ed-amplifier/m2 and http://www.audioprod...fo.aspx?pid=M-2).
The M2 integrated amplifier will be driving a pair of Tannoy Definition DC8T’s which are the result of the refinement of over 80 years of audio heritage. The Definition series feature Tannoy’s Dual Concentric™ design which positions the tweeter at the centre of the cone to yield outstanding time coherence and true point source articulation with no energy loss through the crossover region. (Refer to https://audioproduct...px?pid=DEFDC8TB)
The main front-end will be a NAD C 546BEE CD Player (refer to https://audioproduct...px?pid=C546BEEG). There will also be a NAD M51 Direct Digital DAC on hand (refer to https://audioproduct...o.aspx?pid=M-51).
The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD (or CD/SACD hybrid) or flash drives. Sorry, no vinyl this month. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.
Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind.
Members and Guests welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door.

For our July club meeting … we’re very pleased to have Henry Kristanto of Redefy Audio (http://redefyaudio.com/redefy) present.  Henry last presented to the club in April 2016, when he brought in his superb Redefy Two – this time he’s presenting his impressive Redefy Audio Monitor speakers supported by other top-notch components.

Before the commencement of our meeting at 2:00, we’ll be having a BBQ to celebrate our 10th year.  The inaugural Sydney Audio Club meeting was held on July 1st 2007 – it’s hard to believe that 10 years have gone by so quickly!  So to celebrate our success and good fortune, we’re having an anniversary/birthday party.  Come by at 1:00 to enjoy good food and great company.  It’s free for members, and only $5 per person for guests.  During our regular meeting, there will also be a raffle and some RockWiz style track guessing - just for fun.  Also in attendance will be Marc Rushton, founder and publisher of StereoNET Australia (http://www.stereo.net.au/), and Edgar Kramer who is Editor-in-Chief of the just launched SoundStage Australia (http://www.soundstageaustralia.com/index.php).  (If you wish to attend our meeting as a guest please see our address at the bottom).

The featured system on the day will be as follows:

Redefy Monitor speakers:  2 way 8” + 1.1” dome tweeter.  Here is what the Redefy Audio website says about the Monitor speaker…
“Our first 2 way stand mount Monitor with our own proprietary paper cone 220mm Mid woofer providing very low distortion bass and midrange, linear frequency response and impedance, coupled with a low inductance powerful motor to provide excellent sound dynamics, midrange purity and lastly a capable bass to fill up any sized domestic and studio room.   We selected one of the best dome tweeter in the industry, with powerful neodymium motor, excellent treated dome and loaded with short waveguide to provide excellent dispersion to match our Mid woofer.”
      Refer to http://redefyaudio.com/monitor/ and http://www.audiohifi.com.au/redefy-audio-monitor.php.
Also refer to a review by Edgar Kramer of the Redefy Two at http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews2/redefy/1.html

Vermouth Little Luccas Mk2 Limited speakers:  2 way with 5” and Raal Ribbon tweeter.  Henry is also bringing in some new speakers by Vermouth.  Until recently, Vermouth was known mostly for its high-end cables.  But Hendry Ramli of Vermouth Audio has now turned his hand to speakers as well.
      Refer to http://vermouthaudio.com/new/?wpcproduct=little-luccas-mkii-limited-edition

Arte Forma Elyssa Integrated Single End Tube Amplifier with 805, EL34 and 6SN7 tubes:  Refer to http://www.arteformaaudio.com.tw/elyssa.html.
Rick LeFaver in his review at EnjoyTheMusic said … “Sound wise this amplifier ticks all the boxes, great tonality, world class 3D sound stage, a noise floor on par with all but the very best valve based amplifiers, and macro and micro dynamics in spades. The sound quality of the Elyssa is of reference level for a push-pull tube based amplifier, a perfect entry point for someone looking to explore tube amplifiers.”  Refer to Rick's review at http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0813/arte_forma_audio_elyssa.htm

Esoteric SA60 SACD Player:  This is an older player now, but still an excellent component.  Refer to http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/esoteric9/sa60.html

Vermouth Cabling:  Black Pearl RCA interconnect, Black Pearl Speaker Cable, Red Velvet Power Cable

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO.   Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD (sorry, no vinyl or USB flash drives).  All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting.  We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played.  Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.

For our June club meeting … Morris Swift of OneAudio Music Systems (https://oneaudio.com.au/) will present the active µ2 speakers.  (That “µ” character is pronounced “mu” and is the Greek symbol for small or micro).   OneAudio released the passive version of their µ2 speakers a while ago and it has received acclaim from Len Wallis Audio and others.  The active version is very new.  Brad Serhan designed the cabinet and did the voicing for both the passive and active speakers.  Brad also designed the DSP in the active version.  Morris designed the electronics and amplification.

Here is an excerpt from a OneAudio brochure which explains their design philosophy…
“The relationship between designing equipment and verifying its performance through measurement, and the effect on what we subsequently hear, and how this is perceived, is a complex one. So much so that many audiophiles and even designers claim that you can’t measure what you hear, and implore us to simply trust our ears. At OneAudio, we unequivocally reject this. There is no doubt that such measurement is difficult, requiring new levels of accuracy, novel approaches, and new insights in interpreting the data. But it is absolutely essential if we are to consistently design equipment capable of delivering the high levels of performance and musical enjoyment demanded by us at OneAudio.”

Morris plans to demonstrate both active and passive µ2 speaker systems, however, the emphasis will definitely be on the active version.  He’ll take direction from the audience, but he is also prepared to present on DSP technology and the issues with "digital", as well as the challenges of critical listening/evaluation and "A-B" testing.

Morris will do most of his presenting at the beginning of our second half session (i.e. after our half time break).  He wishes that you listen to the system first without being told what you should expect to hear.  Morris would like you to first listen without influence or bias.

The featured system will be as follows:

Speakers (Active):  OneAudio µ2 Active speakers utilizing ScanSpeak Revelator drivers - a 5" woofer and a 1" ring tweeter.  These drivers are from the ScanSpeak premium product range and can be found in other speakers priced up to $50,000 and beyond.

Main digital Source:  PC/Laptop supplied by OneAudio.

CD Transport:  An Oppo BDP-105D Universal player will be used as a transport (for our BYO session only).

Our popular BYO session will be split – it’ll be in part of the first half session, and also the latter part of our second half session.  Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on CD or USB flash drives (sorry no vinyl).  NOTE that USB flash drives are preferable.
