Elac ub5 vs Kef ls50 or wait for Elac carina?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on which of these pairs of speakers sound beat to you and why.

I want to buy something for a smaller room in my house. Where i actually listen to most of my music and watch most of my tv

Hi anewmission. Ultimately it doesn't matter which speakers we prefer or sound best to us, as we don't have to live with them. Are you not in a position to audition them? Possibly you could include a budget, as some may have ideas that you have not considered.

I would like to hear the Carina as it has a ribbon tweeter. I personally enjoy ribbons, but you may not.

I quite like ribbons. My budget is 2k.
I dont really mind the size of the speakers as long as they arent as big as floorstanders. I think ns1000 size os the biggest i would go.
Looking for clarity, something that will sit on stands. I dont mind using a sub with them either but i would prefer not to.

Elac is substantially cheaper than ls50. Haven’t heard Elac but they wouldn’t be in the  same league.

I think the Quad S2s from memory are are around that much, sound great and have a ribbon tweeter.

i heard them in store and was very impressed

If these will sit on stands, floorstanders shouldn't take up any more space. What amp you use will certainly be a consideration as well.

The elac carinas will be about 1200usd so around the same price as the ls50.
The guy that is designing these elacs now is supposed to be a big deal in the hifi world. I cant remember his name though but all the reviews i read had his name all over them.

Andrew Jones is his name, speaker design is his game.

This is just my opinion but the LS50s are terrible - I had a listen at 2 different stores as they had a lot of WAF and I was after small speakers. They come up for sale far more than any other speaker on these forums.

Don't buy a pair before you have a really good long listen.

I suspect the fact that LS50's come up for sale regularly is probably due to KEF selling a huge number of them in the first place.

I'm not sure that they would sell anymore than Elac.  It would be interesting to see their sales figures because there are a lot of them that come up for resale.

I think kef is available in more stores in this country.
I also think the elac brand name has only been getting real attention sonce this guy andrew jones joined the group. I did some reading on the ub5 and everyone says they sound 4 times as good as the price tag but the build quality is to be desired so lets hope they fixed that with the new ones. Im also going to have a listen to the quads. They look great lets see how they sound.

I happen to have both and constantly listen to both as well. they are very different, after all said and done. i would keep the UB5 and sell ls50 if i have to choose.

LS50 better for desk

ub5 better for room.

You cannot have the cake and eat it too.

Choose one else pay premium.

I owned a pair of LS50’s a couple of years back. Lasted 2 months. Not impressed. Then went on to Lenehan’s ML1’s.  Lasted less time

ok. I’ll admit it.  I don’t like bookshelf speakers.  Take the stands into consideration, and they take up the same room as floorstanders.  And I like em big 😜

If you can, try the Revel Concerto2 M16s

Heard them recently and preferred them to all others mentioned here.

And cheaper.

Apologies. I should have said 'apart from the Carina's, which I haven't heard.'

"2k, any size as long as it goes on a stand...." and we are discussing a handful of speakers when approx 500 models fit that criteria?

On a more constructive note, anyone who hasn't heard UB5 should as its a surprising thing. Build quality seems fine to me.

LS50? Surely the most over hyped speaker ever? I' not saying it isn't a good speaker but why is it always suggested as the only solution?

To the OP, please go and take a listen to a few but be prepared to get confused. There are many excellent loudspeakers in the segment you are interested in.

I have been listening to different speakers for months. Both active and passive. Decided for the moment to keep my mission floorstanders. And if anything really stands out in the near future i will get them. I have a bunch of different amps i have been trying. The yamaha p2200 seems to really have a place in my heart. I have two of them but i can not for the life of me figure out how to bridge them

Hi anewmission, I haven’t heard the Elac’s and so can’t say the KEF LS50s are better.  But I have lived with the LS50s (mounted on IonForge stands to bring driver centres to ear height) and a NAD D3020 (fed by computer running Roon and Sonos) in my study for nearly 3 years and I love them. The LS50s are detailed, fast and have incredible imaging and with such near field listening the bass is all I need.  The LS50s look brilliant and are heavy and so exude quality. I agree with an earlier post that it would be best to listen yourself to each of them in as near a reproduction of your system and room as possible, but just wanted to record the fact that I have found the LS50s to represent excellent value for money and fantastic listening.  In fact the LS50s are one of the last things in my whole system (main or second or work) I would seek to change. Good luck and enjoy the journey.
