One sub or two.

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Currently thinking about refreshing subs then speakers for my home theatre.

Currently a 7.1 but when my new amp (Denon avr X4400) arrives,

I'll be looking at 7.1.2, possibly 7.2.4.

Room size is 5m x 7m..

Are two smaller subs better than one big one?

Living in Adelaide so spoilt for choice at having both VAF and then Krix who are just down the road for me...

The general consensus is 2 smaller subs is better than 1 large sub. The key is to place them in your room to even out the bass.  Some reading material:

hmm first you have the audyssey xt32 which can set up 2 subs ok. when saying 2 small subs are better than one it is quite subjective. ie will 2 svs pb1000's be better than 1 psa XV30F SE ? or the plethora of 2nd hand big subs that regularly pop up.

5m x 7m i am guessing 2.7 ceilings is about 3500 cubic feet, again guessing it is a "closed" room. you can also contact peter at deep hz audiohttp://www.deephzaudio.com/index.html  for an opinion. as with the others you have mentioned. also in adelaide you could contact adelaide speaker company  http://www.adelaidespeakers.com/  oh the guys name escapes me but i have spoken to him before and he is good to deal with.

budget, expectations and previous sub use will guide you.

in my experience. get the one decent sub rather than two half decent splitting the price. get best sub can afford and rather than the half decent ones it will dig deeper, punch harder and and add a heck of a lot more fun factor than just some average subs instead.

the other thing with subs is its hard enough to optimally place one, let alone optimally placing two. if using multi subs they work together. so keep in mind if not optimally placed they can actually even work against each other.

krix make some great subs and with them local, be hard to understand why wouldn't get one off them. in a room that size I would go something like tektonix or volcanix.

Thanks Al. Krix factory is only 10 minutes away!!
They do put out some great subs.
Had some time speaking with Simon from VAF the other night.
They had a Sony night.. Enjoyed listening to a couple of their systems.. From their “awesome” room to a more modest 7.2.2 room with some very tiny speakers. Great sounds from both rooms.

have never ever heard a vaf sub kensell, so cant comment but it would be crazy given your close proximity to such great speaker makers that dont consider buying local :)
