Advise on Vintage Speakers to suit certain types if Music

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Need members advise on what vintage speakers sound great with Pop / Rock / Mid heavy Rock / Live concerts from the 60's through to today's music?

Must have the following;

* They have to play with good detail - semi loud and not too hard to drive around 89db/m and above.

* Must be 8 ohms or higher impedance

* Must be floor standing

* Price range up to $1000 secondhand

* 12" Woofer or larger preferred - 2, 3 or 4 way

* Brands or a DIY custom designs

IMF TLS80 might fit your bill, a friend had a pair, very nice.

I'm running KEF 104aB from 1976 atm and they would be too small as the perform better on low stands.

All ready have the TLS50mkII's, custom Bailey's transmission line and the 104aB's.

Need something with a 12" driver

You've set the bar quite high here IMHO in terms of what you expect the speakers to achieve within the price range you are prepared to pay.  Don't forget that if you buy cheap you may be up for some degree of restoration down the track.

Something like JBL L100s or Electrovoice Interfaces might suit you.  They are large, but not true floorstanders.  There is a pair of E-Vs on Gumtree in Melbourne ATM -  https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/glen-waverley/speakers/electro-voice-ev-interface-2-series-ii-high-end-speaker-usa-/1202992574

The Pioneer HPM 100s are great for that sort of music and a lot better than the normal JBL/Cerwin Vega/Electrovoice alternatives.Much better than the JBL Century L100 for example on which they are based.Pioneer took the classic American rock speaker formula and did it better.Not the least bit audiophile but they are immensely engaging .
