Help with best Preamp for my setup.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new to this forum and looking for some guidance on a good preamp for my setup. I'm mostly a gamer with chat over discord, listen to music and the usual stuff on PC. I currently have an Audio Technica AT2035 mic which I have connected to a Yamaha MG10XU as my audio interface.

I've have the mic plugged directly into the mixer using XLR cable but people on discord tell me that I sound really quite. I've been messed around with some settings on the mixer and in windows but it doesn't seem to make much difference, btw im using windows 7.   I was thinking about investing in a preamp to boost the mic before getting into the mixer and then applying the compression and a little EQ within the limitations on the Yamaha. The preamp I have been looking at is the BEHRINGER MIC500USB VACUUM TUBE MIC PREAMP. Its only about $100 and i'm happy with that but i want to make sure I'm not going to create some issues in the process. I was thinking about using a TSR to XLR balanced cable to connect the two but not sure if the direct out on the preamp will be a line level or not, my gut feeling is it will be but being a noob I would rather get some experts opinions.

I'm also looking to get a new set of headphones for Christmas, possibly the Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO Closed Studio Headphones (250ohms) but haven't even started looking at what amp I will need to drive them. I don't know if the Yamaha mixer will have enough juice to do them justice or if I will need another amp to boost the signal.

Any thoughts  on the preamp issue or if the mixer will drive my possible new headphones..?

Thanks in advance

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, welcome to the forum! Im a relative newcomer here too, but you are posting in a very audiophile based forum centred largely around domestic and high end hi-fi. I could be wrong, but I don't think you'll find many gamers or recording engineers here. Your question may be more suited to the forums on computeraudiophile, home based music production or podcasting forums where people will have more experience of the type of gear you are talking about.

Hopefully someone here can help, if not I hope you find what you are k looking for.

Do you play EVE ?

I had a similar problem with discord, but I found a cure in the discord settings.

I use a cheap ($15) usb mic, seems OK now.

Hi Batty,

Thanks for the suggestion and sorry I don't play EVE although I do have a friend that does, it sounds like an interesting game. I'm going to continue messing around with the settings to see if I can get it sorted, I'm sure it something silly I have missed on either the mixer or in windows. I would be happy to get the preamp to help with the quality of the mic level but just don't know if its worth it.
