Recommendations for 5.1 or 7.1 HTS System (4K, HDR, Etc incl.)

Recommended Posts

So I'm looking for reccomendations for a new complete setup. Budget is around 2k (Please let me know if going much higher will make a huge difference) for the whole setup, either 5.1 or 7.1 including receiver. I've heard good things about the Yamaha Rx v1085 and the A780 (not sure if they'll fit the budget however), but open to others, I'm not really sure on what combination of speakers and sub though.

Leaning more towards 5.1, because not as expensive/can spend more on better options and then the receiver I get will still have 2 channels free if I decide to go for Dolby Atmos speakers later on.

Will be replace my Samsung HTS 5.1 system I bought a couple years ago. Looking for good bass and general sound. Mostly used for TV shows (not broadcast tv), movies and gaming on PS4 Pro. Preferably front and rears would be floor standing as I don't have anywhere to put them otherwise.

If I left anything out let me know! Any help is appreciated, I'm pretty lost lol. Cheers!

Thanks! That seems alright. I'm more looking for reccomendations on a complete separates package to put together so to speak as I heard that can give much better bang for buck.

some points.. the A780 does not have 7 preouts so forget about expanding it to 5.1.2 atmos.

you live in the waste land of HT.. adelaide. so if you are looking for "separates" such as individual buying of: avr, front, centre, surround, atmos speakers, sub, cables etc etc then you maybe should consider looking at 2nd hand gear+ some new gear.

working 2nd hand speakers that you actually audition will save you 50% on new price and allow a better quality. you just need to be patient being in adelaide. same with the subwoofer.

eastwood hifi usually have good deals on yammy avr.. also go visit denis white and see what he can do.

Thanks, must have missed that about the A780... I'm in the nuclear wasteland lol, I'm in Kadina so about 1.5 hours from Adelaide xD. I'll try to see what's around though.

Do you think system 7 here (https://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/surround-packages.htm) would be good, but with a RX-V1085 receiver instead of the one with it?

Something must give a bit here unfortunately Mark :winky: The aventage A780 is pushing the 2k limit alone . As you mentioned a speaker package from a reputable ce that specialises in speakers is the way to go imo . Hopefullguy's suggestion incorporates this well . If nothing comes up or you cant wait Adelaide speakers have discounted packages

http://adelaidespeakers.com/home-theatre-speaker-packages.html

The sub in the 2k system is transmission line so can go under 25hz ; you say floor standers are best ; what about thin profile wall hanging models like the F602 ?

As for your avr have a look at the new denon 1500h which Adelaide speakers can supply ; its priced at $965 elsewhere so may help get an even better bulk deal  https://www.au.denon.com/au/product/homecinema/avreceiver/avrx1500h

Yes, it is nice to buy an entire system, but  you may not get the good sound you are looking for.

There is nothing wrong with taking a stepped approach and use your existing speakers.  For example, replace the AVR first, then the fronts, then the sub, centre, rears etc.   Best bang for buck is to wait for things to pop up in the Classifieds.  But if you cannot wait for the Classifieds, then at least wait for the packages to get discounted e.g. when new model AVR coming out, run out sale of older speakers, demo system sitting in shop etc.

Well I looked at what my current system is, it's the HT-H6550WM. Although the centre speaker is different to the pictures I can find online, so they must have updated it after my model. Nothing special really ahaha. The Good Guys page even claims it's 1000w lol.

https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/samsung-3d-blu-ray-home-theatre-system-1000w-ht-hHT-H6550WM/XY6550wm

But thanks for the link and help so far hopefullguy! Will definitely watch that space. Snoopy8, I think I might go the stepped approach, or otherwise is there good sales like with Tv's on black Friday and boxing day etc?

Pics are of the front setup and second pic is of the plugs for the fronts, centre and sub. Rears are wireless. I take it I could just cut the plugs off and put them into the receiver like normal and that'd be fine? -- Nevermind that last part, probably be better off getting some new wiring for easier resale down the line.

Think I covered everyone's responses... I think I may raise my budget to 2.5-3k though...

Hmm, so after thinking a bit, I might just throw my budget out the window... Now I'm thinking either system 8 or 9 on Eastwood hi-fi, but swapping out AVR for a RX-V2085 or 1085 or going for This Wharfedale 11.3 Diamond Speaker set with either AVR. I will likely be able to mount the rears on the wall now after some discussion. 😂 (May also wall mount the TV 🤔)

Also something I forgot to ask, what cables would you recommend? Or would you recommend to buy some 14 (12?) gauge wire and do it myself?

It is quite a big jump in budget!  And I assume you cannot wait and want to upgrade everything.

Have you heard any packages?  This is important because you should be using your ears to judge.  Should you not like the package,  you could lose a significant amount (at least 25%) on reselling. Hence, my earlier advice to do steps and go second hand...

I may go down and check some out in Adelaide Wednesday if time permits or next Saturday. I'll probably go to Denis White and Challenge Hi-Fi while I'm down.

Hang in there Mate and you can score a lot better speakers for the money you want to spend. I am a big believer of second hand. Members here take very good care of their gear So there are opportunities to grab very good hifi / ht gear for more than 50 % off the retail price of new equipment. Good Luck.

Yeah that's an option I'm considering, I may just get the AVR new or a discounted speaker or two if there's a good deal.
