Soundasme
I have an Oppo 105D player that's about 4 years old and there appears to be some distortion in the right channel. It's not so noticeable when using loudspeakers, but with headphones it is much more evident. I'm a newbie and not very audio aware, so please be gentle. Thanks, Chris. Quark
So is there definitely distortion in the right channel when played back through speakers? What's the set-up for this? Are you connecting headphones directly to the oppo or through an amp/receiver? Are you playing commercial discs or using hard drive/USB? Do your headphones have distortion when listening to other sources? e.g. a computer.
Soundasme
@Quark I'm connecting headphones directly to Oppo's headphone jack, so the problem is in the Oppo's spinner, there's no distortion when using the Oppo's DAC only, i.e. when listening to YouTube clips etc. I have two pairs of headphones and both give the same results. Could there perhaps be a bit of dust caught under the laser? If so, I wouldn't know what to do or how to remove it. Just a thought.
Quark
I've never heard of dust on the laser affecting only a single channel. What discs are you hearing the distortion on? There are plenty of dodgy counterfeit and grey market discs full of errors.
Soundasme
At this stage I've only listened to CD, but I will try different formats like SACD, DVDA etc. All genuine recordings purchased from reputable retailers. The distortion is most obvious with choral music,, when treble voices go up the ladder, or sopranos sing in their higher registers, but it's also there with piano music too. Do the lasers in Oppo's give trouble after say 4/5 years of reasonable use?
Soundasme
Should I need to have the Oppo105 serviced (to fix the issue), where would I take it? Does anyone know of a good fixer on the NSW South Coast, near Nowra or anywhere for that matter. I bought the Oppo from a place called the Oppo Shop in the ACT, but they appear to have gone out of business.

The service they provided was second to none. I forget the owner's name but he was on holidays in Perth and came out personally to install a region-free kit on my BDP-95. And at no additional charge! Maybe if you phone them they can suggest someone. https://www.whitepages.com.au/merlin-audio-design-10870622/mitchell-act-10870616B This doesn't sound like a laser problem. It's further along the signal path.

Is the Oppo 205 that much better (for audio) than the 105? I mostly use the Oppo for audio only (CDs/SACDs), or for YouTube clips etc. Don't use it much for playing DVDs/Blu-Rays. a.dent
This is the price you'll pay for a 205 now they aren't produced anymore. https://www.ebay.com.au/i/132765183014?chn=ps Maybe you should look for a CD/SACD player if you don't play Blurays. https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/hifi/cd-s1000/index.html https://www.pioneeraudio.com.au/collections/cd-players Seems it would be cheaper to get the Oppo fixed. Soundasme
@a.dent This is the local Oppo 205 price, I think the one you linked to was a foreign site: https://www.oppodigital.com.au/products/oppo-udp-205-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray-player-black $2,199 is a bit more reasonable. a.dent
My understanding is they are all sold out. If not grab one.
Soundasme
Here's a player I'd really like to own, but alas it is really expensive (I think about $15K): http://www.luxman.com/product/detail.php?id=
