Cheap speaker cloth : where to buy

Recommended Posts

I am looking for different types and colours of speaker cloth to use for my acoustic panels. Most of my panels are huge and the only ones on ebay seem to be 1.5m x 0.5m

I wpuld love to find some cloth similar to the vloth on vox guitar amps. Or even some nice retro grey or cherry red

Huge sheets at cheap prices

Does anyone know?

This ebay search page has some from 1.6 - 1.8m.  Basic black though. https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=speaker+cloth&ul_noapp=true

I don't think you will find any of that luxurious guitar amp cloth in the width you like (guitar amps aren't that big) or cheap (luxury adds cost).

I don't think there is anything too special about speaker cloth - it just needs to be relatively open weave and not too heavy (so the sound will pass through and not be absorbed).  Try looking through the range at a fabric shop like Spotlight.

Spotlight they sell it by the roll if you want, I’m not kidding they do sell it.

Didn’t see the op’s choices of colors but can’t see why they couldn’t order some in.

There's a reject/clearance warehouse near my place that stocks a variety of fabrics, one of which I was very drawn to and have been using on my acoustic panels. It has a similar openness/breathability in the weave to hessian, but softer and more interesting in my opinion. If there's anything I could change about it, maybe I'd have preferred something a bit lighter in colour, and a bit more contrast in the contrast stitching. Cost $6 a meter, and is about 2.6m wide if I remember correctly (comes folded on the roll). They didn't have much on the roll left after I left though, which is a bit concerning because I might need more myself!

Unfortunately I didn't apply it as straight as I could have.. if you're going for a fabric that would noticeably be affected by waviness, I probably couldn't recommend the "pull on one side then staple, go to opposite side then staple, so on" tactic that so many YouTube videos recommend. I found that it's more consistent  if you just do the one side in full, then go to the opposite side.

Thankyou. I would really like some cloth that resembles what tannoy speakers use
Or even a nice wine red that you see on some vintage speakers. Also its not for spwakers perse. Just needs to be breathable

I think this is the luxurious effect you are looking for.  Unfortunately this is only available in 10x12" size for vintage radios.  The red does look good against the brown Bakelite.

Yeh something like that would be amazing. Haha maybe im looking in the wrong places. The fabric on my stereogram is almost like a tweed or something. Considering just getting some plain material and having my mum paint some artworks on them as she is a good painter and it will give her something to do. Cant help wanting vintage material though. :(

I think this might be a good line of discussion.   I have been guilty of buying specialist speaker cloth, not being sure about using anything else.   Except one time, I used black plastic shade cloth.  That worked well and was strong enough to prevent the drivers getting kicked in accidentally.

Any open weave cloth should work fine I suppose.  You could even spray it the colour you want.
