my x7000 is set and forget and i dont twiddle it or anything. with preset i set up seamless switch blu-ray to UHD or fta :) I  for instance would see a back wards from x7000 to 5900 :)

How do you do this?
I have to go into the menu to change picture mode/colour profile every time I change from BD to UHD. real pain.

Just switch between presets on the remote :) one for SDR blu-Ray/DVD/fta another for uhd/atv4k/xboxonex. I haven’t done it but you could also  setup your harmony if have one to automatically select when you hit watch blu-Ray or watch uhd or watch appletv4k or play game(xboxonex)

lol, of course the standard remote has presets hahah. I've never used it and just run with a harmony. I'll set up some buttons for when im using UHD player and media player.

At least it will save me some time jumping through menus all the time....wife will be happy too

Hi Al,

I have a x35 and by upgrading to say a x7900 will I still see the massive benefit with 1080p and 4k media on a cheap 110” 16:9 screen? :) I think it was a screen from TCC.

screen was a $300 job lol.

thanks,

k.

even with the x35, screens are so important in my opinion, literally where picture is formed, the canvas. leave to you what you see as value, but for me I see it as something that will last through the ages, my projector screen has seen 3 other projectors come and go and on its 4th projector. likely will have it for a very long time so worth the investment for the long term.

A preview test for a NX9 preproduction unit in german language with some additional information

https://www.lowbeats.de/exklusivtest...hendprojektor/

1435 Lumen calibrated in low lamp mode
1900 lumen calibrated in high lamp mode
The DCI filter costs 1/3 of the light output.

1900 lumens calibrated if typical across units is excellent news. That is a nice step up as compared with all of the pre-existing eShift range and also beats all of the SONYs up to and including the SONY 885/760ES. It will be interesting to see how the SONY 995ES compares given it has precisely the same advertised peak luminance of 2200 lumens.

1/3 light loss on the other hand with thr BT.2020 colour filter, is disappointing. Whilst an improvement versus the JVC RS4500/Z1's circa 45% light loss this is significantly worse than the pre-existing eShifts and too high to be worth actually using. If the light loss is indeed that high I would personally be opting to not use the filter and run the projectors at max light output with circa 90% of DCI-P3 or whatever it actually measures. 1/3 light loss for a circa +10% of DCI-P3 = A BAD DEAL... especially given it's reportedly over 90% without the filter.

Seriously I wish manufacturers would realize that this is the tail wagging the dog... IMO what they should ALL do is to limit such light loss to maximum 10% and simply produce as close to 100% of DCI-P3 as can be achieved with that. I'd take 97% of DCI-P3 with 10% light loss over 100% of DCI-P3 with 1/3 light loss every time thanks! Where most people wont even use the latter making the filters inclusion pointless, just like with respect to the JVC RS4500/Z1. But the good news and saving grace here is the reported at least 90% without the filter. Let's just hope the measurements confirm that! Either way, I just can't see anyone using the filter; which would also explain why even JVC themselves were not doing so in the demos at IFA and CEDIA!

Furthermore, if the measurements confirm 1/3 light loss is typical then of course this means the JVC RS2000/NX7 loses a USP versus the RS1000/NX5, meaning the primary differences are double the peak ON/OFF contrast, where the comparative measurements for actual typical light output levels are yet even more key now; and the slightly higher luminance.

Where the pertinent question that needs answering, which I will answer ASAP, is with respect to JVC RS2000/NX7 versus JVC RS1000/NX5 with the former operating without the BT.2020 colour filter, just how much of a perceivable difference in video performance is there? "  Quoting Nigel Arrow-AV from AVS

The current generation of e-shift JVCs only apply the P3 filter to the green channel and light loss is in the vicinity of 10%, whereas the N-series apparently applies the filter across all 3 RGB channels to achieve 100% of P3 losing 30% of lumens in the process. ( pre production model testing).

Thanks for the great price on my 2015 X7000 Rich, with only 850 hours on the lamp and great Arve curves for HDR "tone mapping" , I can see no reason to spend $9000+ for "true 4k"

I agree 100% Al and I've done comparison between mine and another ( local guy they use in WA ) and it was night and day difference

personally thinking about it little more, I am not sure why you are looking at the 5900 at all, it doesnt get the better light engine the x7000-x7500-x7900 got and doesnt get their dual iris, full p3 coverage, THX rating (for what ever thats worth THX for those not getting a calibration straight up, out of box is pretty good ! ) etc. and thats without talking contrast, light output etc.

the 7 series were the pick, an suspect wiht this new gen will be too, but its just seems to have got SO expensive !

i think you are right too 7900 (or earlier 7500 or 7000)with tone mapping from the player would be a pretty good option !

for those who cant pony upto 7900 dont disregard the older 7500 or 7000 either, we had work arounds for anything the 7900 offered which was minimal in my opinion over previous gen. my x7000 is set and forget and i dont twiddle it or anything. with preset i set up seamless switch blu-ray to UHD or fta :) I  for instance would see a back wards from x7000 to 5900 :)

Yeah I’m aiming for the 7900, will see what the new price is. Was I reading correct that jvc aren’t reducing the 7900 price until next year? I’ll wait till I hear it from the horses mouth first

Totally agree with Al.

I may be spending a lot to update my ancient home theatre, but the one thing I don’t have to change is my screen, a tab tensioned motorised Stewart Firehawk G3 16:9 100” diag.

The only reason I’ll update it is if I decide to get an anamorphic lens and motorised sled, and update it to a screen with motorised masking.

One thing that might help keep these delicate machines as close to the state they're in when they come off the production line is by using specialised couriers. I use cope sensitive freight, also known simply as cope transport. They transport everything from TV's to poker machines and ATM's, computers, parts etc. I haven't had a damaged screen in years since moving to cope. They may take a day longer and charge quite a bit more to get something where it needs to be, but they'll get it there carefully and in good order. I've seen mobs like startrack express deliver high end projectors with such violence and carelessness it defies logic (Sony 760, both handles on the box ripped, projector wouldn't even fire up, lamp flashes suggested PJ had been dropped - pretty impressive they have a lamp flash sequence for that!).

If the manufacturer could see how they often handle these sorts of products they'd switch to someone like cope pretty quickly. I think this is where convergence and other things maybe even the optics can get knocked around and in the end you're stuck with something that's possibly been made worse because of transport companies who either don't care or don't have the time to care about someone elses expensive bit of gear.

Thanks guys. I guess one way to find out is to upgrade my projector to say the x7900 and see if I can tell the difference on my cheap screen vs the x35 [emoji4]

That could be a pricey test, especially if your screen becomes the visual bottleneck in your setup!

Looks like the jvc n5 n7 and nx9 pricing is out. I was hoping to stretch for an n7, now I’ll be lucky to stretch for an n5..... disappointing.

Where ?? I couldn't find it. Digital Cinema still showing coming soon.

I was hoping the pricing would be a bit lower. Unless Rich is doing some red hot deals I'll have to sit back and save some pennies.

Yeah, me too.  I think I'll be flogging my X500 to death...
