How good is Taboo?!

Love this kind of show. Bit biased for Hardy also.

I don't mind it. 3 episodes in.

BTW, there is already a thread here you might want to use in future.

Yep, loving it. Very dark. Will watch the last episode tomorrow. The missus loves Poldark. This is what Poldark should be like.

Hey if I may hijack - can I confirm that SBS on demand is no longer available on PS4?  It used to work fine.....??  I also can't get it on WDLive.  Would it work if I played on a computer/ipad to maybe a Chromecast streamer?  Mat

I use Kodi with the Aussie replay TV add on and it’s great - bonus is that you can also get AFL if you are a Telstra customer

My favourite SBS on demand series for the last few years just returned with Season 4.

The Bureau (French)

Woohooo.

I agree, but the gap between series 3 and 4 has been so long that it's taken a bit of effort to pick the plot up again.  A bit of a flash-back at the start would have been helpful.

Hi Alan

I haven’t started series 4 yet, but purchased series 1-3 recently on DVD. Watched S3 about a month ago, so should be up to speed.

But yeah....it’s been a long wait and a re-cap would be helpful.

SBS on Demand: The Plague

https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/program/the-plague

< During an outbreak of the bubonic plague in the magnificent Seville of 1597, Mateo, a former soldier, returns, honouring his word to find and extract a dead friend’s son from the city. Previously, Mateo had been forced to flee the city to save his life, having been sentenced to death by the Inquisition for printing forbidden books. Before he can complete his task, Mateo is arrested by the Inquisitor’s bailiffs, who promise to pardon his life in exchange for solving a series of crimes of diabolic overtones being committed in Seville. >

It's murky, shot mostly in the shadows, gritty viewing, slowly you're hooked!

I Am Not Your N3gro (2017)

A doco about James Baldwin (an American philosopher, playwright and civil rights activist, whom in my ignorance I never heard of before watching this) and his take on American society through exploring the legacy of his 3 friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jnr (all three murdered in the 60s), based on an unfinished 30 odd page script from late 70's titled Remember This House. A fascinating doco with kick-ass archival footage and photos as well as superb narration by Samuel L. Jackson (in the manner of James Baldwin), plus an awesome soundtrack that really hooks into the memory.

The word N3gro is in the title of the doco. Gotta write it somehow.

Have to give it a look. I’m assuming Sam Cooke is in the Sountrack?

Mother and Child (2009)

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mother_and_child/

A touch too long and a bit late to introduce some plot points (eg major developments towards the end of 2nd third do it a bit of disservice) however packs quite a punch emotionally and dramatically. Annette Bening - I doubt has ever acted better than here. A well rounded powerhouse of a film and wouldn't expect any less from writer/director Rodrigo Garcia and executive producer Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, as well as the kick-ass cast Samuel L. Jackson, Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, Amy Brenneman and others (too many to mention). Cannot believe I haven't seen it before. Available on SBS OnDemand and Netflix.

There is also an official soundtrack by Alexei Aigu, but I guess that's more atmospherics, background mood and the general vibe of the story type music in shortish snippets (less than 25 mins all up).

SBS On Demand June 2020, a few highlights:

< DNA

There’s no stopping the top-quality drama coming out of Denmark. In a co-production with France, DNA brings together stars Nicholas Bro (The Bridge, The Killing) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Broadchurch) as Rolf Larsen, a respected Copenhagen detective, and Claire, a seasoned French investigator. Five years after Rolf’s baby daughter goes missing, a bungle in the DNA database is discovered, renewing hope she might still be alive. He joins forces with Claire, who’s investigating a similar case with ties to an international child trafficking ring in the desperate hope of finally uncovering the truth.

From the creator, writer and executive producer of highly acclaimed The Killing, DNA’s cast also includes rising Polish star Zofia Wichlacz (Netflix thriller 1983) and Olivia Joof (Boogie).

DNA season 1 premieres at SBS On Demand on Thursday 11 June. >

< The Bureau

Fans of this show have been awaiting its return with baited breath. Season 5 sees new Director of Internal Security, JJA (Mathieu Amalric) running the office while Marie-Jeanne (Florence Loiret Caille) takes on fieldwork in Egypt. Back at the DGSE, staff are shaken by rumours published about the fate of Malotru (Mathieu Kassovitz). Is he dead or alive? What role did the DGSE and the CIA play? JJA’s paranoia heightens as do the stress levels of Sisteron (Jonathan Zaccaï) and Ellenstein (Jules Sagot). Will we finally learn the truth?

Joining the cast this season is film actor Louis Garrel (Mon Roi, Le Redoutable) as agent Mille Sabords, tasked to investigate Malotru. Behind the scenes, Palme d’Or and César-winning director Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, A Prophet) is on board, and Kassovitz also directs several episodes.

The Bureau season 5 premieres at SBS On Demand on Thursday 18 June. Seasons 1–4 are now streaming. Start or re-live your obsession with The Bureau here: >

< Das Boot

This critically acclaimed drama series, exploring how the human soul can become twisted by war, returns to December 1942, and U-boat ace Johannes von Reinhartz (Clemens Schick) has a new mission to transport three saboteurs to the USA on board U-822. When his loyalty is questioned, U-612, commanded by CO Wrangel (Stefan Konarske), is sent in pursuit. Former U-612 CO Hoffmann (Rick Okon) finds shelter in New York with Sam Greenwood (Vincent Kartheiser), who owes his life to Hoffmann. There, he meets sleazy German-born lawyer Berger (Thomas Kretschmann), but will Berger help Hoffmann return home and clear his name?

Back in La Rochelle, Simone (Vicky Krieps) and her roommate Margot (Fleur Geffrier) battle to secure an escape route for a Jewish family, but Forster (Tom Wlaschiha), Head of the Gestapo, is watching their every move.

Season 2 welcomes several new cast members including Casino Royale’s Clemens Schick, Avengers: Age of Ultron’s Thomas Kretschmann, Terminator’s Rochelle Neil and The Downfall’s Ulrich Matthes. Best TV series I have ever watched- The Bureau

I have read that it is based on now declassified real espionage events that the writer weaved together to make into this riveting and so-real drama masterpiece.

IMO The Bureau is better than other shows that I loved such as Line of Duty and the Nordic Noirs.
