The love of Conrad Johnson & Benz Micro

Recommended Posts

I rather spend my time and valuable efforts on listening to great music, learning from others well though out systems and having meaningful discussions with those wonderful people on the subject, rather than nit pick and look for hiccups people make along the way...

Get a life mate and just turn on your system and enjoy your music, it might actually make you a happier...

My wife says the same thing, hence why I call her the good wife!

Tonight we'll be listening to that legend Nat king Cole and Ray Charles genius loves company, superb recordings!

Cheers to all, RJ

Hey Rocky, what do you have now?

Is it still CJ or have you ventured towards other brands like ARC, VTL and so on... What speakers are you using?

Did you ever have stats with CJ? That is one superb combination...

For what it's worth, do you think I should go for that ET5?

I also noticed the pv15 to be much quieter than the ET5 or even when I had the ACT2..., what are your thoughts and best advice?

I'm not the best for advice on this as I only have used a few combos when I had it. I was trying a few nice preamps at the time and when the ET5 arrived it just was so much better than the others in my system. Had some French made Atohm floorstanding speakers as well as others during this time. Was trying to find something to really wow me with the speakers and the ET5 was it!. All long gone now.

Currently have a slightly modified Octave Preamp with a local made Amp and some US made speakers.

Would love to have the CJ ET5 back to see how it would go in my current system.

Not sure if this was directed at me but regardless, what a charming attitude.

There’s a right way and wrong way to praise industry representatives and in my view, labelling most others in the industry as “con artists” or “sales cowboys” is the wrong way. If you think it’s the right way, so be it but there’s no need to start getting personal by suggesting those who disagree with you need to “get a life” and listen to music to be “a happier....” (I assume your intent was for a profanity to be inserted in lieu of the dots - very classy).

Otherwise, enjoy your music through the very fine CJ gear and many happy returns for your Birthday!

You are too much of a gentleman Greg, but good on you for not dragging this to the gutter and not feeding the troll  ( I don't know if I would be able to summon such restraint )?

If anyone enjoys music and has a life, I reckon you would be at the head of that list, so don't change a thing mate.

As for the subject matter I could not agree more. It is easy for internet warriors to attack dealers who have no way to reply and overwhelmingly audio retailers who have been in the industry for the long term are exemplary and are a pleasure to deal with

Thanks Lindsay - though sometimes I do wish I shared your (occasional and meritorious online) freedom from restraint!!?

Perhaps surprisingly, I do have a lot of restraint. It's just when friends are insulted that it gets somewhat difficult. Everyone who has met ( or knows ) me also knows that I am a very peaceful guy, but internet trolls are another matter.

I have seen ,at first hand what these people can do and at times it can be very dire.

I’m sure you are, Lindsay. My original post now modified to better capture my intention!?

With you mate and I have seen your generosity and humble way. Hence the Chrissy pressie last year.

And it was very much appreciated, Wim! If I can get you over to my joint for some tunes, I’ve got a couple of records I think you’ll enjoy with your name on them as well!?

Nice to see the ? love going round... That's more like it.

Thanks for your advice and points noted, certainly helps to further improve on such forums and continue meaningful discussion.

Turning 45 was not an easy task! Too many years went by worrying about silly things in life and forgetting the most important aspect of family members, hence the good wife is always there to keep us on track! Honestly, without her I would probably be homeless, especially after my brief stint with Wilson's. Never want to go there again unless I had large amounts of disposable income to keep all "interested " parties happy ?...

She was my foundation during those hardest times, and I can only be thankful for her guidance and support.

During my last point of sale/purchase; I was thinking on getting the ET5 and LP125 monoblocks but again the shoe box is not adequate for such amplification and does not require this kind of power. The Ethos work just fine on the Classic 60se and there is really no need for further improvement. Once we're in the larger space then perhaps I can assess the situation if need be.

Such as, higher grade phonostages & do on.

Thanks for the wishes, sometimes after turning 45 I feel like forgetting the special day is a good thing because we tend to feel older as the years go by reaching that 50 mark!  On no?

Hoping the keep fit program will certainly help in the long ?

Cheers to all and here is the lovely better half!

I'll try to get some pics of the system tonight, this is going to be a tough project, one that requires a delicate touch and proper focus. At the moment I'm a bit tipsy from mixing Singha beer with Chiraz... ?

Take care everyone, RJ

OK here goes, they're not the best but at least something is visible. I've posted similar pics on other threads, under Martin Logan's, same room & the shoe box... Nothing changed, only this time all cables & interconnects are DH Labs, Q-10 S2 & Silver Sonic, and all power cords are Nordost.

Those shelves can be stacked but I prefer to arrange the components horizontally for better access when cleaning & ventilation. The config and set up placement will be totally different at the new place.

I intend to have the rug under all gear, racking / shelves etc. A dedicated stand for the TT as this is close to a disaster...

And the ML Ethos well away from all of it, plus listening position further out.

From the shoe box photo it's hard to gauge distance. The speakers' panels are nearly 2m away from the back wall and adequate space for me to walk around the sides but it is the distance of the system from the speaker's enclosure that is the issue. That's not even a meter from the TT & left channel!

Well I guess I'll have to manage for now.

Any suggestions, would be much appreciated, thanks for taking the time to look & advice. RJ

You have a lot of glass shelves. Some say not so good for stereos.

From reading the forums here, I replaced some of my glass shelves in the rack with bamboo ones. I went to a local cabinet maker who specialised in bamboo boards.

Also bought some of those bamboo ikea cutting boards and used them under other components on different shelves. All up was cheap compared to most things to do with this hobby for me. Thought it looked better too. :)

What if you swap the TT position with the Conrad Johnson ?

Or get rid of the telly and put the TT in its place

Or at least mount the TV on the wall. Or maybe consider a dedicated wall mounted shelf for your turntable.

Thanks for the points & advice, no doubt all your suggestions are spot on! The screen has to go or wall mounted..., separate rack for TT and better shelving.

Since we're renting the shoe box, land lord is very strict about any mods to anything. Hence spikes in carpets, wiring out of the way carefully custom installed... No chance!

When I had the Maggie's, the tele was located on the far right against a wall /window and the Maggie's didn't require that much space between panels since they were not as wide as Quads.

Plus the one and only sofa was across on the left side. Listening position was an arm chair for one person only. Hence, when the wifey wanted to listen it was musical chairs...

When the Quads arrived, things had to be relocated and wifey was very happy ? tele more visible and she could also enjoy her music! She knows how to power it up,  and adjust whatever is required but the TT sequence gets her a little fluxed... ? claims that her old automatic Panasonic TT was faaar better, no need to adjust anything...

Each time I walk into the shoe box after work during the early hrs of the morning, whiles watching the news, I spend a good 30mins contemplating on what/how I could relocate to make all happy. After long thought I doze off?

The bamboo shelves look outstanding! Would I place those right on top of the glass or how do I mount these?

Cheers mates for the advice, certainly learnt a lot here. RJ

My goal was to rid the glass from my system. I removed my glass shelves (easy on my rack as they just sat on top or metal supports) and then placed the new ones (were cut to size) on with some cork furniture round dots I bought from bunnings.

You could always try the Ikea ones on top of the glass shelves if not easy to remove them. LINK

They are placed upside down from the pic. Again I put stickon non slip cork feet on mine from bunnings. LINK  They have a couple of sizes too.

If the cutting board/s don't work out, the 'good wife' has some nice boards for the kitchen. :)

Nice one mate, thanks for that I'll definitely head to Ikea and Bunnings to look around.

I had a few ideas to purchase some new system racks from the chaps who were demoing Sonus Faber with Mac amps at the last hi-fi show but these things are quite costly, let alone each shelf in modular format. Beautiful design and very well built though.

I think the Ikea / Bunnings suggestion will add more value since I can use my existing ones without having to chuck them out. Paid quite a bit from a dealer in Sydney, same place where I got the Wilson's many years ago...

It looks like I will need to spend some quality time with this little project for what it's worth, and judging from what you've done, looks beautiful!

Cheers mate, RJ
