Ivanhoe
Reading the past month or so's worth of posts on the forum it seems like the majority believe the LG OLED C7 is the best TV out there. Some debate that the Sony A1 is better but generally if around the same price point (which it isn't). Now LG have released the C8, which is the best mass market 65 inch TV, when you factor in the price? (these are retail prices advertised online and I am rounding up the few dollars to the actual price.) C7 at $4500 C8 at $5500 A1 at $5700 Most opinions seem to have it as a close call between the Sony and the C7 - so does a $1200 gap to the C7 rule out the Sony? Or is it worth paying an additional $1000 for the latest model C8 over the C7? Seems like the primary change is the beefed up processor - which may improve interpolation and processing of motion blur and lower def pictures. Is that worth the difference? Hydrology
I think I would be happy with either a C7 or C8, however where I think the Sony shines is its settings - out-of-the-box picture is fantastic, not to mention its ability to handle SD broadcasts excellently. As SD will be around for some time, this would factor into my decision.
ChupaChups
You should be able to get a deal on C7 close to 4k in price. I am okay with my C7, but do look out for dirty yellow tint on the screen (against a neutral grey or white background). For day to day moving images it is the best, can't beat true black background. Don't forget other manufacturer source their panels from LG.

chrisso1671
The Sony is about 5k at the moment at most retailers. Some say better processing for Sd and the like.
chrisso1671
Also whats with Samsung pricing on the new Q9 Qled i know its getting rave reviews for an LCD but $9995 for the 75 and $6495 for the 65 wow, the new pana FZ950 oled is only $5495 for the 65 these are retail prices and I know can get cheaper but i dont think I could pay $6500 grand for an LCD? And at 10 k for the 75 Q9 i would just stretch it to the 77 OLED.
Ivanhoe
I must have misread the Sony pricing - its $5700 (now fixed above). People felt this had the edge on the C7 (but at a premium) - question then is - does it have an edge on the C8?

Black Label
TBH i'd be plonking $3.5K on a C7 as my understanding is the advances with the C8 are minimal, and with regards the Sony being better at SD well who the hell cares about SD And if I were to be looking at a $5K spend then i'd be starting to seriously consider the Sony KD75X9400E which can be found for that sum, an additional 10" being nothing to sneeze at even if it isn't an OLED
chrisso1671
yeah good call on the KD 759X400 E it would be a good buy at 5k, And some people still do care about SD, I am not one of them but heaps of people I know still watch FTA Sd and DVD LOL.
Ivanhoe
I think the 75 inch will freak the wife out - 65 is about as far as I can go (upgrading from 46 inch Sony Bravia). Leaning towards the C7, but noticed that the 55 inch C7 seems to have already disappeared from the stores, 65 inch may be gone soon too. So no advocates for the C8? chrisso1671
I have read good things about the C8 over on AVS , but most are saying it is only a slight improvement over C7 ( although panel uniformity is a lot better) if you could pick up a run out C7 for a lot less might be the better choice up to you, go to a store and compare for the money, and defiantly go as big as you can, I went from 65 to 75 then to 120 jvc projector ( that I no longer have, moved) now back to 65 and miss the 120 and 75 everyday. Actually i tried to watch a movie on my tv and turned it off, as I miss my PJ so much lol.
Pieface
A 75" will freak her out but you would be surprised how rapidly accustomed everyone becomes. I think you will probably face the same level/length of "freakout" with a 65" but once they get used to it you have a 10" bigger telly. What is your seating distance like? If you are further back than THX recommended for immersion I think everyone will be used to it in a week or so. NB - assuming the other concerns like PQ etc stack up on a 75" in budget.

Go for the 75. 65 is really not that big in the scheme of things these days. my wife was originally concerned about the size increase from out 50, but after a few hours didn't even notice. Plus a bigger image is just better. Sure the some of the OLED 65's will be a better image, but i think size wins for a tv. I purchased the pana 75ex780a and couldn't be happier (paid $3200, though people are now getting them for $3k). I generally just watch netflix/FTA on the TV, with 99% of movies on the projector. The image really is amazing if i do watch a UHD/BD on the tv. The Pana is also the only TV that does 3D if you're into that type of thing. The sony 9400E is also really highly regarded. Ivanhoe
Hmmm... Will be a big jump for my wife - she is not a TV watcher at all - and we do almost all movie watching in another room on projector as you do. TV in family room is mostly me watching sport - kids watching a bit of Netflix - and overflow if the projector is being used by someone else. But it is quite a large room and the TV and couches on opposite sides - so probably about 5m distance between.

JSmith Yes I agree with you JS, my above comment is more a joke. For full disclosure I personally have a Panasonic VT60 plasma 55", rue the day I opted for it over the 65", and for my next screen will be almost certainly going for a 75". My current residential arrangement means I can only dream of having a PJ setup as per the OP Edited May 4, 2018 by Black Label

Ivanhoe
LOL, You're supposed to be making my decision easier, not harder! Seriously, the discussion is helping greatly - I am leaning to the 65 for budget / happy wife reasons - but I might mark up the 65 and 75 on the wall with tape or something just to get a sense of size in the context of the room.

Ive been even know to watch SD stuff on the PJ, though that is nasty and generally only if the wife wants to watch something on it. Not really a sports fan, so cant comment on sports etc. Just think about the quality at a pub etc, its generally on a massive screen, looks a little average but once the game starts you dont notice it. 21 minutes ago, Ivanhoe said: LOL, You're supposed to be making my decision easier, not harder! The only scary thing about a 75 is the size of the box it comes in!!! I marked it up as well and was a little worried about it, but once installed it looks fine. Wife is happy we went the for the 75. It was a toss up between the 65 OLED C7 and the 75 LED. Size over quality won in the end
onthebeach
All the FTA stations broardcast in HD dont they? Im in regional NSW and all my channels are available in HD. I havent had to watch sport on SD for a while now.

Piling on When you have a 65'' rather than a 75"' it makes the projector impress more when you use it Ive found That's with a 100" screen technics drop down to give an idea of perspective though.. And you can put the shekels towards a 2018 model with an upgraded 3d lut etc possibly ? If you only had 1 display though agree with a 75'' choice ; those things are heavy Edited May 5, 2018 by cwt
