Hal Saunders
Didn't think I would have so much trouble sourcing a component. I'm after bitumastic pads to line the inside of a loudspeaker, preferably around 7mm thickness, and preferably in Australia. Have found similar on Wilmslow Audio and Parts Express, but freight is a killer. I thought I'd easily get them at Bunnings, Repco etc but that hasn't worked out. Need them for a small bedroom speaker I'm having fun designing.

cheekyboy
You could try this self adhesive deadening material here from Soundlabs. I've used this myself and it is a very good dampening product. Cheers, Keith

mikes875
I was looking too and wondered about Bitumen Paint/Membrane as I have 100 litre boxes and the sheets get expensive. It should seal up the box completely too. Anyone tried it?https://www.bunnings.com.au/gripset-betta-4l-bitumen-rubber-waterproofing-membrane_p0960166Comes in 15 litre buckets. Thought I might trial mixing sand with it and see how it goes... crazy idea?

Curious on this one as well, have seen it and thought application might be easier since you can just build up layers to what you want. Shouldn't sag over time, which had me wondering about the adhesive sheets.
mikes875
Had a look at Bunnings. It has a 10 year guarantee, I know not in this application but they must be confident it lasts. Says water down as paint or neat as membrane. Looks like approx 0.6 mm per coat so would probably need 5-6 coats. I am planning to water it down for the first coat to get absorption and then just start layering on with 2-4 hours between. Will see how it goes... BioBrian
Dynamat worked well in my last speaker boxes. Thick, heavy, and the aluminium layer adds to the CLD properties. After that, felt adhered well to the aluminium with Fuller Ultra Clear. I stuck the Dynamat directly to Baltic Birch ply, but apparently it would stick better if the ply gets a coat or 2 of any paint first.

mikes875
felt adhered well to the aluminium with Fuller Ultra Clear. Where did you get the felt from? I asked a couple of Carpet stores and the said to get from Bunnings. Had a look and they only have 4mm with a plastic covering on one side. Looking for something thicker

Some looked sideways and sort of said "we only sell foam underlay", but others had felt (made from recycled rags, I think). I was looking for the wool (and/or cotton?) type, like Jantzen sell, and have found this in the past, but the last lot had a thin fake backing, which actually made it easier to handle and glue in - and the felt part is just as good. Edited March 23, 2018 by BioBrian probably more likely wool than cotton, etfc
mikes875
I have been looking at 10mm wool felt. Can only find in the UK. About $180 AUD delivered to Australia for 15 sqm. E.g. http://r.ebay.com/oEns3F a bit more than I need though. Could probably use half a roll if someone is interested in sharing? BioBrian
Just happened to discover this - Hi Fi Collective in the UK has Jantzen damping products now. https://www.hificollective.co.uk/loudspeaker-accessories/acoustic-dampening.html Oh, but they won't send the bitumen by air mail. bau88
More expensive, but have you considered Focal BAM? Absorbs backwaves and provides deadening
Hatlesschimp
Here you can get a lot of DIY Audio stuff from Wagner. The pads are a lot cheaper then them Focal ones haha. https://www.wagneronline.com.au/bitumen/ps/
Dogbert
I would try car motor trimmer suppliers for the underfelt. Also the car stereo shops for sound deadening material like Dynamat or equivalent (I haven't ordered anything from the stores linked below so I cannot vouch for their service or reliability) http://www.carbuilders.com.au/sound-deadener https://www.ryda.com.au/car-audio/accessories/siund-deadener
