Gross DAC demo/loan unit registration

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

well the three input Gross DAC demo unit should arrive at Joz’s place (Melbourne) in a few days.

Anyone interested in trying it needs to register via email (not PM) with me at

sales_at_gieseler_dot_com_au

There is also a “contact us” link at the very bottom of the home page on my website

http://www.gieseler.com.au/index.html

I need your

1. Full name

2. Address

3. Phone number

4. Photo of drivers licence attached to email.

Each borrower will be responsible for delivering (or shipping) to the next person in the list.

I will email the current borrower with next person it needs to go to.

The Gross costs me quite a lot in parts & build time so I want to try & keep track of it & make sure it does not go astray.

OK once I have a list of participants I will post it here  & then we can work some sort of delivery order depending on geographical location.

I would like to keep the loan time down to a few days with each user as I have a feeling the list may be long.

Well guys what do you think?  Any other suggestions?

Clay,   just a suggestion.   maybe let @joz have it longer as there are many members here who have been down at his place and are familiar with the SQ of his rig.  It's up to joe o

Suggest a person attach a photo of their driver's license to the email request. Also a parts list/check list with the box.

While I expect most here will respect and take care of the loaner, it takes just one careless moment to may be damage it. Perhaps someone you know or one of  owners in the host city (I'll volunteer Melb) to check unit after a few demos.

Lastly, take a deposit???

Good luck with this, guys! I've had my listen to @bhobba USB only version of the GroB DAC and it does make me think I should have waited for it to come out instead of buying 2nd hand Gungnir Multibit. Though the Gungnir Multibit is no slouch...

Jeez Mike, you can't drop the ball like that.

But prolly better to experience it in your system anyhow.

Once it's done it's tour of duty hopefully it'll be back here for a GTG.

The Dac is in my hands now.

A quick 5 min indicated strings are more life like than my audiolab dac, voices are also more dynamic.

One minor issue is the volumn setting is not loud enough. Feed into power amp, I need regularly set at 70-75. DSDs volumes are much lower, so it may have a chance to hit the 100 ceiling.

Which lead to my second issue, I can't make it work on DSD from suqeezebox through spdif. It just produce cracking noise. These are DSD64 dsf files, they worked well in the audiolab spdif. So I think this is something Clay need to look into the production version.

Mine is set to 70-75 for normal listening. The digital volume control drops bits, so ideally you want the volume setting high rather than low.  My DSD volume setting is 50-60 for normal listening.

And I assume you are at max volume in the Squeezebox?

Hi guys,

none of my DAC’s support DSD via S/PDIF. I’m not certain but I don’t think many DAC’s do.

However DSD should be fine via USB from the Squeezebox. The Amanero USB board is currently flashed with the default

firmware which gives Linux & Windows based  server support. For users with Linux based servers I would normally flash the Amanero

with the Linux specific firmware which gives better performance on Linux servers & DSD 512.

Maxium output of the DAC is 2v rms so with some low sensitivity  power amps you may struggle a bit with low level material.

As Snoopy correctly pointed out the distortion actually drops a bit at the higher output levels so it is fine to be runing at say 100 - max output.

RE - next person to try the demo unit.

Tony currently has it (Box Hill) so when he is finished who (Davin, Michael & Russell) would like to pick it up next?

Once you decide I will email you Tony’s contact info.

I handed the loan unit over to DavinB yesterday for his ‘home alone with DAC’ experience this weekend (I was tempted to invite myself around and offer to take a few beers, but thought that might be a bit much on first meet :)

The Gross DAC provided the best sound I have heard on my system to date. As expected, it was a clear step up from my Myryad MCD600 CD player and also the Klein v1 that I have on loan from a friend.

It had superior depth, atmosphere and sense of space in and around objects than the Myryad. There was more going on in the soundstage and imaging to listen to, and things just sounded more natural... and hence more engaging. Bass was tighter whilst still very powerful and went low.

Compared to the Klein, the Gross provided superior detail, naturalness, depth and presence. The better the recording the more obvious the differences, with Roger Waters’ Amused to Death probably being the album I listened to most.

I can totally relate to comments made by others, including Snoopy, BAM and illbarto who all described the Gross as ‘addictive’. I just found myself wanting to listen to more and more music. Thanks Clay!

Problem then would be that you may be tempted to sleep over because it is so addictive.... :lol::P

Thank you for your review.  Appreciate your thoughts and hope to hear from the others, even to say "had the unit, was so so, passed it on!"

Hi. I can’t get this to work through usb it toslink I’m afraid. No sound. Clay can you help please? I know Davin had issues with the optical as well. I’ve tried two optical cords.

Also tried USB but I’m not sure if the USB on my Bluesound is an in or out.

The USB on the bluesound can’t be used.    It’s only for USB sticks (input)

Have you selected the right input on the dac via the options?

Okay, this is a very good point, I assumed it would detect the input...

So my feedback from my listening fail session is that the front of the panel looks awesome and the connectors on the back are all solid and shiny. That's all for now.

Hi Mike,

ok - power the DAC on & select the optical input.

Required actions.

Hit the red button twice then use ch button until you get to “channel”

Use “vol” button to select optical. Then ch button again to get back to Volume screen to see what level you are at.

If you are using a intergrated amp or power/pre set vol up to 100. If straight into a power amp start at say 50.

OK now power up your optical source & you should be good to go.

I have recently found out that if you cycle the inputs it will mute the coax/optical inputs.

To remedy this just hit the  “av” button (which is the dac mute button) or the red button - home screen - either action

will unmute the DAC.

When I get time I will see if the firmware can be tweaked to remove this anomaly.

If ever you get strange sound or no sound power cycling the DAC will sort it.

The Gross manual is nearly finished but in the mean time refer to the single sheet marked Gross Manual v1.1

Regards Clay

Okay will try tonight, thanks for the instructions.

On another note I’m picking up one of your pre amps 2nd hand on Friday so would be good to try these two together before it goes to Joe for the GTG.
