New Samsung MicroLED

Recommended Posts

Nice. Read about this yesterday and seems like it may actually be a true competitor to OLED if they scale it down for home use (the 146" size is currently aimed at commercial use).

Be interesting to see if the new QLED TVs are actually a big improvement from current models.

A lot easier to manufacture it looks and combines the peak brightness of lcd with oled type blacks :) Will be a lot less easier making a choice between lcd and oled with their differing HDR requirements..

The new qleds have finally discovered FALD ; nice tone mapping too; good stuff ;)

Samsung's QLED have failed to challenge OLED for the premium segment. I can't believe they charge so much for it when it's essentially an edge lit LCD TV.

exactly, I wouldn't mind paying less for QLED (actually I did for KS range) with its advantages/disadvantages but paying today's OLED premium for edge lit LCD? and it seems with new Q9F/C range it won't be any better, yes you'll most probably get better quality than today's models but I expect to be for much higher price tag...

we need new tech from Samsung to match/beat OLED otherwise we are moving in circles

Hopefully the FALD sets will  infiltrate the lower series if they've learnt anything :)

The biggest news in 2018 is that many of the Samsung QLED TVs now implement full-array local dimming (FALD) backlights instead of edgelighting, which is said to reduce the black level by a factor of 3.

I think I read somewhere that only the Q9 will have FALD. The lower models will continue to be edge lit. Here's the kicker - they will still be priced at parity with OLED! Oh well. Another quiet year for Samsung then.

Yes ; the value is elsewhere .That's the trouble with different specs for different countries ; I wouldn't put it past them to do just that . They don't even specify if the top and bottom or just one side are edge lit to save money ; let alone how many zones ;)

I await to see what this tech can manage ; though the price will no doubt be through the roof :)

In the second half of 2018, we will see a new tech called ‘Micro Full Array’ (MFA).

I believe their Amoled screen technology is little different than standard Oled used be LG but I might be wrong, anyway I assume in next couple of weeks we'll see what and how will be implemented so I'm staying tuned :)

AMOLED stands for Active Matrix OLED. All current OLED displays (TV or phone\tablet) are AMOLED I believe.

Maybe Samsung should just stick to phones where they are happy to use oled for there screens. There reluctance to touch it with a barge pole in the tv's is making them look silly.

Samsung have a long history with OLED TV's - first started in 2008 or so with a 40 inch screen.

Samsung with LG had the first commercial released OLED's in 2012/13. remember those curved OLED's.

Samsung could never get the manufacturing failure rate of OLED 55 inch screens low enough to be profitable - so they exited the market in 2014.

LG OTOH have a different,  I believe patented OLED production manufacturing method that enables them to to 55, 65 and 77 inch OLED with rejection rates low enough for it to be profitable.

now we have Micro-LED that several manufacturers are trying to commercialise Samsung and Sony included.    If they get this right - OLED will be dropped by Sony, Panasonic  and co very quickly.

No dude we don't have sh!t!How long did it take a manufacture working on OLED before it became commercially viable?More than a decade is the answer so this bs mock up from Samsung at the CES 2018 is right on target for 2028 LMFAO @ samsung!

really?   Sony have a 110 inch micro-LED now.  with smaller models in 2-4 years

@JSmith definitely, it seems they aren't far from commercial products, I think they mentioned something about end of this year...one of the concerns for now is visible pattern of the tiles, hopefully they can make it somehow more one solid surface, extremely visible on Sony's panel above mentioned by @metal beat , second concern is scalability, current tiles have certain pixel density, with smaller sizes the overall resolution will drop so unless there are multiple types with different density it'll be kind of difficult to build but I'm sure they will manage it :)

It sure does. Seems it's coming quicker than I first thought too which is even better! :)

You have good reason to J ; Samsung are hungry to claw back the hi end market

Samsung has seen its market share in the premium TV market fall from 57% in 2015 to 20% in 2016 as its QD-LEDs failed to compete with LG's OLED TVs. LG itself managed to increase its market share from 17.5% in 2015 to 43% in 2016.

; note the yields mentioned below :) and remember how oled went and its yields synchronicity with price over time....

They ended up sorting that though by doubling the size of the blue sub-pixel, but as we know it was the yield issues for large panels (Sony's professional oled monitors never seemed to have this issue, but expensive as for the size) that stopped Samsung in it's tracks. There was some new ways to make larger RGB OLED panels that they almost invested in, but then seem to have gone down this route now... reckon they wasted heaps of cash with their OLED investments. I believe it's much easier and cheaper to produce these micro led panels though.

  • 1 year later...

I get the feeling this will be THE future. it will achieve OLEDs contrast and without the issues of LCDs. price though :D

can these roll up like oled and projection screens that might be a factor for those not wanting a large screen that dominates the room :)

At the CES they wouldn't let anyone near the screen to see the seams between the microled blocks.I sit about 2.2 mt away from my TV and it would drive me nuts if I could see seams in my screen. They also have only just managed to build a demo mock up with enough pixels for 4K with these block modules while Oled and LCD have 8K ready to go.To me mock up demo's against existing tech means microled is 3 years away at the least.
