Use for this cable?

Recommended Posts

Would this make decent speaker cable? Or possibly a nice power cable?

Marked as h07rn-f 5g 4.0mm2

5 x cores of finely stranded wire.

I have 2 of these at 3.6 metres each.

They were 3 phase power cables for high server gear.

Can't clearly make out the markings on the cable, what size are the conductors?

A bit biased?

... yeah maybe. My point mainly was the relationship between inductance, capacitance and resistance.

The OP @JPete9 will need to ascertain these figures for this cable, to work out if it is appropriate for use.

Originally being for power transmission I doubt they will be suitable anyway.

Totally agree

I’ve tried many power cables of differing types over the years as speaker cable.  I’ve never been impressed with the result

cheers

Why do you think it would make good speaker cable?

In my book, stranded cable never delivers good sound (compared to multiple solid-core).  So the only place you use it (stranded cable) is on power cables - coz that's all you can get!!

And as to whether it would make a good power cable ... how are you going to arrange the 5 wires (across active/neutral/earth)?

I certainly agree with using twisted pairs and minimising skin effect.  :thumb:

I dont think it will be a nice speaker cable, i asked whether it might be.

I just came across it, and i know it's a serious power cable and i thought it was too good to toss, so i was hoping to find a user for it.

In 2 x 3.6 lengths its quite a chunk of cable.

It'll be fine.

No it won't

As an idea, why not strip the ends and give it a try? Then you can let us know how it actually performs in your system. Would only take 5 to 10 minutes to prepare it with bare wire ends.

No, I think there is a little too much oxygen in that copper cable to be suitable for speaker wire
