The Ashes

Are those selectors insane. Tim Paine doesn't even keep for Tassie. They use to say the aussie side picked itself when we had all that talent. unbelievable , I cannot believe

Paine should have been picked a couple of years ago but has had bad luck with injury - a left field decision for sure.

Matt Renshaw has got to be unlucky.  so what if he did nit score many runs in Sheff shield so far this year.  He did very well last year and pretty well on the Indian tour.

I even feel sorry for Maxwell -replaced by Marsh who is in for his 17th opportunity.  How many chances does an ex selector's son get?

at least the bowling picks itself.

yes - I thought we went away from Marsh and brought in Renshaw and a few other 'new bloods'.  I just don't enjoy watching him bat.  twitchy and never confident.

I enjoy watching Maxwell bat. Too bad he never(hardly ever) hangs around long enough. Such a talent to be able to play some of those crazy shots.

As a Sandgroper, I was pleased to see Bancroft get a call up but stunned to see Marsh recalled - again.

I would have stayed with Renshaw and slotted Bancroft in at six. He has plenty of time to work his way to the top of the order.

I also thought Neville should have been behind the stumps.

Let's just see if Shaun can lift his average when batting at 6. It's currently standing at a princely 1 as I understand it.

Banners had to come in. It's no slight to Matty Renshaw, he will be back.

Paine looks like a decision made at a long lunch, not much exposed form to go on. Hopefully he makes a good account of himself.

@metal beat  I hope you don't think Rod Marsh is Shaun and Mitch's dad...:hiccup

Perhaps your the one who has had too many long lunchs :hiccup:hiccup

Geoffrey Robert Marsh (born 31 December 1958, in Northam, Western Australia) is a former Australian cricketer, coach and selector.

Relations Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh(sons), Melissa Marsh (daughter)

Well I think 50 baggy green test caps would be more likely to account for any favouritism or his perhaps stint from 96 to ~'00 as world cup winning Australian coach.

..or you could think ~12 month stint as a selector, a decade before either of his sons was selected to play for Australia, is the most likely cause of perceived favouritism and why you pointed it out in your original post :hiccup

Usman is another one that they keep stuffing around with. The only certanknees are the bowlers , Smith and Warner.

Had a shoulder injury and is playing as a batsman only currently. Will need a good block of form as an all rounder to get back to the national side or to make piles of runs to show he can bat 6 at a high level.

Steve Smith has NFI how to use an all rounder though so I am not hopeful we will see Mitch back any time soon.

Interesting to see Maxwell brought back into the squad as cover for Warner.

If he comes in, that would see Marsh open.

That would be a weird turn of events. Still i suppose as long as the ball doesnt swing, move off the seam, or deviate in anyway I’m sure he’ll be fine!

No movement on a green Gabba pitch...

With the potential for high humidity...

Plus afternoon sea breeze...

About as much chance of that happening...

As the Poms winning at the Gabba...

Kevin Mitchell has a perfect record to protect...

Now Marsh is injured.

Your right about Smith and allrounders and even spinners, worst captain I have ever witnessed for Australia.

I hate to say it but Warner should be captain.

Just like the old days when Warnie should have been in charge but we had to endure Ponting's floundering.

so what's new - Marsh is always injured - either physically or mentally.

Maxwell should have been given the opportunity in the first test anyway.

I  would have gone with Maxwell, and probably Neville.

Still, the first session of the first test - love it.

I love the game of cricket I looked forward to every Ashes series I tuned in today only to hear Michael Clarke state in a pre match interview what I always thought (aw der),  but never wanted to hear "that cricket is now a business" as if I needed any more convincing there's that massive 3d Magellan sign right behind the batsman. Well that's it for me fellars they can take their bat and bloody ball and 3d signs the game of cricket is dead to me apart from the local cricket club.

4 overs to go and a good day's cricket. First day's honours to Australia but we may have a contest.

Edit: Maybe honours even?

Let's hope we wipe the floor with the Pome's this time, unlike in 86/87. :D

Paine dropped one off Lyon this afternoon...

Seemed like a sitter as well, Healy held back his bagging of Paine to.

Good day of test cricket though.
