Sydney Audio Club Meeting - Sunday 8th October 2017 - Avantgarde UNO XD, Lab12, Innuos, AMR

Recommended Posts

For our October club meeting we’re very pleased to have Cameron Keating of MAXMEDIA present the Avantgarde Acoustic UNO XD.  Cameron has previously presented the Zero 1 XD active speakers.  He’s back to present lots of superb new products… the Avantgarde Acoustic UNO XD horn speakers, Lab 12 pre and power, the Innuos Zenith SE media Server and the AMR 777 SE DAC.

The featured system on the day will be:

Avantgarde Acoustic Uno XD.  From the MaxMedia website… “The UNO XD Series is a scaled–down version of the classical DUO system. By employing smaller 10 inch bass drivers and by integrating the horns as part of the speaker body, we managed to reduce the cabinet structure considerably. The objective was to accomplish the clarity and power of its “bigger“ brother in a significantly reduced enclosure.  The 500mm spherical midrange horn covers a wide bandwidth down to 300 hz. The active subwoofer SUB225 XD Series supplements the balance between spherical horn performance and low frequency reproduction. It is actuated by two 10 inch long– excursion drivers powered by a 1000 Watt amplifier.”
More info at:

Lab12 Suono Power Amp.  From the 6moons website (Url below)…  “…the Suono amp, simply means sound. And that's in Italian, not Greek. It's a stripped-back very essential meaning. On looks too it avoids the overbuilt template of thermionic temple worship. It's far more basic and simple. This continues with quite practical specs. It's a SET if those letters signify single-ended tube. Whilst it can be run in triode mode with the flick of a switch, its KT150 power tube really isn't a triode at all. It's a high-power kinkless tetrode in the KT88 family. Hence the option to run the Suono in native or ultralinear mode. Now it delivers a full 25wpc.”
More info at:

Lab12 Pre1 Preamplifier.  From the HiFi Pig website (Url below)… “Internally Lab 12 uses a matched pair of E88CC valves along with a solid state power supply with four separate regulation stages for each channel.  The pre1 is fully dual mono and uses the company’s trademarked “Fine Symmetry” in every part of the circuit. MKP audio grade capacitors and resistors are used and are selected to be accurate to 0.1%.“
More info at:

Innuos Zenith SE Media Server.  From the Innuos website (Url below)… “The Zenith SE picks up the trademark PRaT (Pace, Rhythm and Timing) and neutrality of the Zenith and raises it to an entirely new level. To achieve this, we focused on 3 areas: Power Supply, Vibration and EMI Shielding...”
More info at:

AMR 777 SE DAC.  From the 6moons website (Url below)… “…AMR's lucky number seven is a dual-mono single-ended affair with two separate DACs plus a valved output stage to seal the deal with a harmonically rich finish. Tubes make the unit flexible to some extent. Throw in selectable conversion methods. Physically, the DP-777SE is on the bigger side, measuring 45 x 37 x 12cm WxDxH and weighing 11.5kg. Frequency response is 20Hz–20kHz, A-weighted S/NR is >100 dB, THD+N is <0.3%. Dynamic range and channel separation are the same >90dB. Finish is black or silver and switchable 115/230V AC makes for one universal model. Power consumption in standby is below 1 watts and below 60 watts in operation. The build is tank-like to communicate seriousness of purpose.”
More info at:

Oppo BDP-105D Universal player.  Will be used as a transport into the AMR DAC – required for our BYO session.
More info at:
http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/oppo-bdp-105-universal-blu-ray-player-and-dac/ and https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-105/

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO.   Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on CD or USB flash drives (sorry, no vinyl).  All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting.  We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played.  Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others.  Feel free to come and hear the capabilities of the system, or to just share the experience with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Guests are welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound.

Our October club meeting was another educational, fun and well attended meeting.  Cameron Keating arrived from Melbourne on Sunday morning – ready to go.  He drove throughout the night only stopping for fuel, food and a bit of sleep.  His dedication to the industry and club is quite amazing, and fully recognized and appreciated by the club.

Cameron presented the very new Avantgarde Acoustic UNO XD speakers plus lots of great gear from Lab 12 in Greece.  The Lab 12 isn’t super expensive, but it is super impressive.  The pre and power were open and transparent with tonality that was very good.  The SQ was quite surprizing at the price point.  The tubed power amp was $3700 and the pre a bit less at $2430.  You could spend a lot more elsewhere and not get the same level of quality.   (And they look great to boot.)   The UNO XD speakers were quite new and not fully run-in, so they did exhibit a bit of hardness in the mids and tightness in the bass, and the highs didn’t have the “air” that they would normally exhibit.   They told you all about the poorly recorded music (think "Queen"!) – and there’s lots of that unfortunately.   With more hours they’d really open up more but you could already sense the potential.  And as the afternoon progressed, they sounded better and better.   They start at $35,000.

The Innuos music server and AMR DAC proved to be excellent as well.   Innuos was a new name to many on the day, but they walked away with another strong contender in mind when they go shopping for a new music server.  Price wise, it starts at $8900.  And AMR can’t seem to put a foot wrong - this is an superbly musical DAC at $8000.

Our Member Music Session was presented by Jim Faulkner.  Jim lives in Canberra, but manages to come up for most club meetings!  He presented 8 tracks of lute compared to guitar, and piano forte compared to a modern piano.  Music was by Bach and Satie.  Jim’s knowledge of the music and instruments was excellent, and he was very effective in explaining it all to the audience.   I mentioned to him afterwards that I’d really like to see him present again.

After our break we had our usual BYO music session.  Once again, it was a love it or hate it affair (!).  Some people loved Classical, others loved the Rock/Pop whilst others the electronica.  There’s no pleasing everyone.   Nevertheless, the music scored pretty high overall so it seems it was all good in the end.

Here’s some feedback from the Feedback Forms…

“Speakers are excellent - they really showed up the good (and the bad) recordings.”

“One of the best speakers I've heard here.  Very fast and open.”

“Some harshness, not sure where it came from. “

“Excellent and interesting equipment.”

“Appreciated the opportunity to hear these horns with such fine ancillaries - found the speakers increasingly satisfying.”

“Quite good horn speakers.  Top quality sonically.”

“Loved it.  Perfect?… no, but musical, rhythmic and involving.”

“Equipment out of my price range.  But very interesting horns.”

“Horns lacked balance.  Insufficient bass, mids too strident, highs lacked air and extension.”

“Another great meeting.  Loved hearing the horns.  Equipment looked stunning."

“Excellent effort to bring in this system.  An eye opener indeed.  Affordable tube components from Greece.”

“Another enjoyable meeting.  Speakers were very clear and fast, beautiful looking.”

“It took a while to "warm to them" but I enjoyed the speakers a lot.”

“Spiffy looking speakers.  With only a few hours on them, they obviously needed more time to "run in" -- bass was a bit tight, mids were a bit hard at times, and the highs were a bit soft.  They didn't tolerate bad recordings well.  But once broken in, I bet they'd really be great!”

Thanks Cameron.  Photos to follow…

      Item Condition:             Excellent
Reason for selling:       Need to raise funds
Payment Method:         Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
      Extra Info:
I am offering for sale a set of rare, high quality, great sounding amplifiers. One is a Pre-Amplifier and one is a stereo power amplifier, sold together as a set.
Avantgarde Acoustic are known for their highly respected horn speakers, which can be very revealing of the source and amplification.
According to them, a few years ago they became aware that many of their customers who bought the Duo & Trio speakers were wanting better amplification than what they could commonly find.
They decided to embark on a project to create the best possible amplification not only for their range of loudspeakers but for all audiophiles with all loudspeaker types.
Key objectives were VERY LOW noise floor (silence) and mechanical & electrical isolation.
If you are interested, have a read of this review because it sums up the great attention to detail contained within this equipment, including a patented DC circuit for the signal:
With the flick of a toggle switch, the XA PRE can be switched to DC function. This isolates the signal from the AC power supply and it runs from an internal battery supply.
There are a few high end pre-amps that provide this feature because the sonic benefits are remarkable and have to be heard to be believed.
The music emerges from a totally silent black background. You can hear the silence between the notes and this has the effect of completely transforming the dynamics of the sound.
The resolution is wonderful but at the same time the sound is natural and musical - the rhythmic & timing qualities of the music create a great canvas for the melody to unfold.
You don't have to be an owner of horn speakers to appreciate these amplifiers. I have connected & listened to them with Wilson Alexandria, Duntech Sovereign and Sonus Faber Aida loudspeakers and they were superb.
This set were purchased from the Australian dealer and are finished in the Tiger Rosewood presentation. They are made in Germany, facilitate only XLR connections (no RCA unbalanced) and produce 150W per channel. Beware though....each amplifier is over 40kg!
Here is the manufacturer's website for your reference:
The cost of these brand new is $43,000 ($23,000 for the XA PRE and $20,000 for the XA POWER).
In the review mentioned above, Roy Gregory says "They are not cheap -- although in material and performance terms they are certainly a bargain".
If you are genuinely interested, I'd like to hear from you.
Please note that these are not just another similar version of the common amplifier designs available everywhere. These are a genuinely innovative design that has resulted in multiple patent applications and they sound distinctly better than all the amplifiers that I have heard. If you are looking for a 'destination' set of amplifiers that are built with the finest attention to detail inside and out, that will give you truly world class performance and have a hint of exclusivity, then these may be just waiting for you......enjoy!
(Please note that in the pictures, the Townshend Audio pods that the amps are resting on are not included in the sale)

      Avantgarde Acoustic Zero TA XD

8pm Wednesday 19th July, visitors welcome.

This month we welcome to the club a local importer of High End audio equipment Cameron Keating from Maxmedia, who will be presenting a selection of European Hi-Fi brands, one of which Avantgarde Acoustic from Germany, would be a very familiar name with horn speaker enthusiasts.
Cameron will be demonstrating the newest model in the Avantgarde range, the Zero TA XD. This entry-level speaker encompasses Avantgarde's 25 years of know how in hybrid horn loudspeakers. Up until now, Avantgarde fans have had to choose between one of the company's bigger, more expensive hybrid horns. Standing just over a meter tall, this new three way model is described as a semiactive horn system. The objective was to accomplish the clarity and power of its 'bigger' brothers, in a significantly reduced enclosure.
Employing Avantgarde's CDC technology, the midrange driver has no passive filter components in the signal path. This results in a sound characterized with an effortless clarity and explosive vitality. The 400 mm spherical midrange horn crosses over at 300hz to a DSP-controlled 10-band parametric subwoofer. This 12 inch long throw driver is powered by a 500Watt amplifier.
Partnering the speakers for the night, will be the LAB 12 Mighty Power Amplifier. This single ended class A valve amp, will be driving the mids and tweeters with only 10 Watts. Matched to its pre-amp, the LAB 12 TRUE is a Passive Attenuator / Input Selector. The LAB 12 DAC 1 will be taking care of the digital to analogue duties, with classic non oversampling (Phillips TDA 1543) and a tube based output stage. Not forgetting a second DAC from iFi the Micro iDSD BL will be taking a turn. The font end source will be a music sever from INNUOS, the Zeneth Mk II.
With a system sensitivity of 104 dB, the ZERO TA is 32 times the dynamic range of a conventional 87 dB box speaker. I think we're in for some fireworks for the night.

Our February club meeting sees the very welcome return of Cameron Keating of MAXMEDIA Melbourne.  Without fail, Cameron always brings in interesting and superb sounding gear – and this time looks to be no different..!   This month the emphasis with be on the various iFi products he sells.  iFi is the UK manufacturer of high performance, reasonably priced equipment.  And Cameron will also be bringing an excellent turntable so we’ll hear lots of great vinyl too (don’t forget to bring yours!).
The system will be: AVANTGARDE ACOUSTIC, IFI, SCHEU ANALOGUE, LAB 12 and KingSound Electrostatic Headphones
AVANTGARDE ACOUSTIC - The ZERO 1 XD is a 3-way active loudspeaker in a 2 x 50 watt and 1 x 400 watt power amplified 3-way active system, configuration, with each of the driver stages receiving a signal that is digitally filtered and then converted to analogue, amplified, and directly connected to the voice coil of the driver systems without any passive filters in between.  A ‘one-size-fits-all’ power amplifier covering the entire frequency range is renounced in favor of amplifier stages optimized for each of the dedicated frequency ranges.  Moreover, the strict division into 3 ranges prevents bass signals from affecting midrange and treble reproduction and vice-versa.
SCHEU ANALOGUE - The CLASSIC CELLO TURNTABLE fitted with Rega 202 and Ortofon Super OM10 $2,499.  It will be running with the new IFI IPHONO 2 $849.   How a `connoisseur´s tip’ came to conquer the analogue world.  What began 20 years ago with Thomas Scheu’s `passion for tinkering´ has grown into a highly regarded company with audiophile customers almost anywhere on this recently revinylized planet.  The SCHEU Cello Classic Line Timbre was awarded `Product of The Year´ by the Cinema Awards  2015 in Russia, it is easy to see why on inspection.  The Cello Classic Line is divided into three models with different features (tonearms and cartridges), different shell structures and different shell designs.  Also see the Scheu website.
IFI, IFI, IFI…  “…UK’s largest manufacturer of high-end audio systems… one-stop shop for computer audio… the greatest depth and breadth in USB power and signal clean-up devices…”
The Micro iFi iPHONO 2.  Only everything has been improved.  Ultra-wide gain range – max gain is an astonishing 72dB, min gain is 36dB.  To suit any cartridge.  Whisper quiet – SNR of > 86dB is an impressive 10dB quieter than the original.  Latest AMR trickle-down; Class A, TubeState® circuit for unrivalled linearity, DriveDrive® servo-less ‘DC infinity’ circuit.  No capacitors AND no DC-Servo means zero added noise and distortion in the audio signal path.  $849.
The NEW Micro IFI iDSD BL edition DAC.  Digital engine upgraded with iFi custom ultra-low noise Op-Amp OV2028 Analogue section upgraded with iFi custom ultra-low noise Op-Amp OV2627.  $925
IFI SPDIF Purifier.  When asked, does it make your system sound better, they answer was in all cases, we cannot listen now without it in place.  SPDIF is ubiquitous, but needs jitter sorting.  SPDIF is back.  With platforms like PS4, Xbox, Apple TV and Google Chromecast etc., SPDIF output has once again become a popular medium for enjoying good sound.  However, such SPDIF outputs are loaded with jitter which effects sub-par sound quality.  The new SPDIF iPurifier runs the SPDIF signal through 4 comprehensive signal optimisation and regeneration stages.  The SPDIF iPurifier eliminates all source jitter and regenerates a perfect SPDIF signal - resulting in warmer, more dynamic, resolving and flat out more life-like sonics.  Quieter than battery iPower 5V included.  $225.
LAB 12 - The Gordian Multifunctional Power Distributor / Conditioner.  Your system deserves clean and abundant power.  Whatever your audio system setup is, clean and abundant power is the nutrition that will make it reveal its strength and virtuousness.  It is well known that an inadequate power distributor may kill the dynamics of your audio system and that a noisy AC power line could affect its performance on midrange and high frequency signals.  Gordian is here to distribute all the power that your system may need even at extreme situations without losing its strength.  It is also here to gently clean up the unwanted artefacts from your power supply using a well-designed, adaptive network of passive components.  Conductors of very large cross section, high quality tight sockets and industrial grade bindings constitute the unshakable electrical network that delivers the power to your system.  The “star” topology of the inner connections reduces to the minimum the noise transfer between your devices while guarantees that no ground loops will be developed.
The Gordian cares about the quality of your power source more than you may realize.  It incorporates an industrial grade power analyzer which lets you inspect many aspects of your AC power signal.  Some of the available metrics are:
      ·        Frequency (accuracy 0.0005%)
      ·        Total Harmonic Distortion (THD - accuracy 0.005%)
      ·        RMS Voltage/Current
      ·        Power Consumption
      ·        Power Factor
      ·        FFT (Frequency analysis)
      ·        DC Voltage
A serious power analyser.  PRICE - AS DISCUSSED.
LAB 12 -  The Passive Attenuator / Input Selector TRUE
Some like pure.  TRUE is a pure passive attenuator/input selector.  It is designed to keep every detail of this low level, sensitive signal coming from your source to your power amplifier, unaffected.  Connect it to your system, allow some playing hours to let it get familiar with your devices and finally enjoy the music.  Because at the end of the day this is what we are truly looking for.  Includes features like a Blue Velvet ALPS Audio Grade potentiometer and a high grade input selector.  RRP $799.
KingSound Electrostatic Headphones  – for the headphone lovers, Cameron will be bringing in the new KingSound Electrostatic Headphones.  Likely the KS-2 package which includes the KS-2 headphones ($849 on their own) and the M-10 Amplifier: $1,099 INC GST for the package.
Note:  We will also have an Oppo BDP-105D Universal player on hand to allow the playing of CD/SACD and USB flash drives during our BYO session.  We will be using the Oppo only as a transport.
The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO.   Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all.  So bring along your favourite music on vinyl, CD/SACD or USB flash drive.
