catman
G'day all, I often listen to the Drive program on ABC Classic FM of an evening, as I am tonight and as it has been a bright hot day (in North Queensland), I had the curtains covering the windows facing the sun to the West and with the setting sun and this room rapidly becoming dark, the music coming out of my Tivoli radio seemed to take on an enveloping quality....quite wonderful actually! Music can do that. Regards, Felix.
PleasantSounds
I don't think it is a property of music, but of our hearing. For early humanoids a good hearing in the dark was a matter of life and death, while at daytime they could rely much more on eyesight. Thus the evolution promoted those who have better developed this sense, and our night time listening still benefits from the increased hearing sensitivity. That's how I like to explain this phenomenon anyway Cheers

walker1000
I do sometimes enjoy music in the dark, I find I get drawn right in and it almost envelops me, until the point when I fall asleep!!

Powerglide
+ one for the dark, I think I hear more detail at low volume in the dark than louder during the day maybe the circadian rhythm kicking in relaxing the body and mind preparing for sleep Twilight is my favourite part of the day visually

TheBrightSide
Just close your eyes. I think it's the best way to listen to music. You hear more without visual distraction.
MattyW
It's even more fun with glowing tube gear.... Part of the pleasure is aesthetic rather than purely aural

Part of the pleasure is aesthetic rather than purely aural Couldn't agree more. Listening to music in the <almost> dark bathed in the warm glow of valves is one of life's magical experiences. My previous amp was an 80's pre/power combo with huge VU meters. When I was young I used to think it was great sitting in the dark watching the meters dance. As time went by, I found the VU meters a distraction that somehow got in the way of being 'absorbed' by the music. I ended up strategically placing records in front of the power amp so I wouldn't be distracted. Glowing valves have presented no such obstacles to date.

RDM
The liner notes on The The's album Mind Bomb are explicit - "To obtain maximum pleasure & effect from this album, please play VERY LOUD!, VERY LATE, VERY ALONE...& with the lights turned VERY LOW!" Fore those unfamiliar with this band/album I would encourage you to take a listen under just such conditions. However, prepare yourself for a whole lot of bleakness with regards to the human condition, humanity, and religion. A sonic and thematic slap to the face. Here's a taste if you think you can cope - don't say you weren't warned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImI44EGIJ_0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riMpAsjDQbA
swervyn
I find it much easier to hear with my eyes closed, no visual distraction. Might be my lack of multitasking ability

MattyW
True, though the goal is enjoyment.... Not purely getting the best sound. Hence the aesthetic aspect. I've also found that touch is an important part of the experience as well so quality switches, input selectors, volume pot, tonearm lifters etc also play a part.... Not to mention handling of the vinyl itself....

MattyW
I'm good for a few years now.... A 300B can wait. Funnily enough the thing that brought the most enjoyment to my system sound wise after getting the Aurum Cantus F620 speakers was Dueland braided speaker wire. Go figure right?

MattyW
Just now, Happy said: So the Aurum speakers were a success? Definitely. More detailed top to bottom with far better integrated bass than my old B&W DM16's could do with a separate sub. Seems I like the colouration of the tubes better than the colouration of the B&W speakers. I'm getting the best sound I've ever heard now.... Music, movies, TV, you name it

I think it makes a huge difference when listening to music, especially when it comes to focusing on the details.
