Home theatre rookie Posted September 13, 2017 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Hey guys, Like the title says im after a home theatre system. Would like 7.2.4. Room is 4m x 7m x 2.7m high. Im after; A 130" 16:9 screen. Front towers and centre to be good quality (i know, i know listen to different set hps to find "my sound") 2 subwoofers All surround/atmos drivers. AVR (and amp if necessary) Projector. (will be mounted 7.1 metres from screen on rear wall). This will be a dedicated home theatre room completely blacked out with matt black ceiling paint, thick curtains on the walls and carpet. Can stretch the budget out to 8k if necessary. Lounge, carpet, curtains, wall, down lights, new door etc.. is costing a bomb (as much as my audio visual budget). Hence the small budget. Snoopy8 Posted September 13, 2017 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Have you been into a HT retailer and listened to setups and seen some projectors & screens? For example, some people prefer the Denon sound to Yamaha. If you have not, suggest doing so. Your ears and eyes are the best judge. Also, are you audio or video focused? Snoopy8 - i have been to the lifestyle shop and listened and watched a few demos at harvey norman. Im thinking a good quality centre speaker for audio quality as i do like good quality clear audio but understand i cant have my cake..... So im thinking get a better quality image for now and can upgrade audio down the track if i feel the need. I want to put in a whole system so its as close to plug and play down the track if i choose to upgrade say subs at one point, or front towers at another. I would suggest starting with the things you like , e.g. projector etc and work your way through. Agree very much with your view of centre speaker. I would be patient and check out Gumtree and Ebay. Just be carefull of "white van" products. Look at JBL, Krix, Klipsch, Definitive Technology, B&W, Richter, Whatmough, Paradigm, PSB and other mainstream brands. Better quality video = say 4K which will get a good projector and screen (& don't skimp on screen). Video is not an area I know, so I will leave it to others to suggest brands, models etc. This leaves 4K for audio and you are looking for 7.2.4 system. (7 speakers, 2 subs, 4 ceiling) Agree with desire to get a good centre (for dialog from movies), ideally a matched left, right centre. But with so many speakers & wanting quality as well, you will need a top/mid AVR with grunt, or entry AVR plus amps. $$$ starting to add up! Suggest getting fewer better speakers rather than spread over more. Rather than plug & play & replace, a better approach is to get a good core starting system and expand. You could start with 5.1 (but wire up for 7.2.4 if building new room). Or go second hand, readjust priority, budget etc. Lastly, but not least, go to a specialist e.g. Eastwood HiFi, not Harvey Norman, not the best for HT. And rather than pick & choose individual components, look at a package deal. Reduce your speaker count to a good quality 5.1 system, add the extra speakers later - this is where the hobby side of it starts to kick in... If you want new then the Lifestyle store, which you have been to, has some great gear in all price ranges and they will haggle big time. Ask for Brendan. But you can find used/older Krix speakers cheaper on ebay etc. HN normally will make not much money on a tv, but then sell you cables , warranties etc at huge markups. Re the Klipch speakers from HN - also look at same used. As others have said - check out Eastwood Hifi and their website. Good package deals, new products, seconds etc. (I dont know Lifestyle Store so cant comment.) Re AVR's - their value drops like mad the moment you walk out of the store and new models come out continiously. Go to a shop or 2 and listen before you buy anything. Take your time and enjoy. Adding the $ up, it will be more than 5k which reduces the video side. However, skip HN because advice there usually poor and more often than not, overpriced for HT. Go to Lifestyle, Eastwood Hifi & other specialists who are more likely to provide a better match of components and relevant advice. You do have a significant budget, so will be able to secure a decent package. Again, suggest starting with a good 5.1 core system. More speakers = more power = more $$. Please do not be misled by the specs of a cheap AVR which claim it can drive so many channels and has huge power per channel. A better upgrade is 5.2 and investing more in heavy curtains and room treatments. Taming bass and getting it right makes a difference. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
