Speaker Wire for New Build

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking at speaker wire for in-wall installation and hear at Audioholics hat 14 gauge 4 core wire is the way to go. Just checking, I assume you would combine the 4 strands into 2 then connect to your speakers? How would you guys plug 14 gauge 4 core in?

I'm looking at these ..

good decent 2 core. tycab linear crystal. local made product cost $2 bucks a meter or there about last time i got some. triple sheathed and good gauge, can pick up from local electrical wholesaler in 50-100m roll.

with that kind of thing made local i wouldn't even bother with any chinese stuff !

ps i would only use the 2 core per speaker...

Agree with Al, but a couple of caveats below.

How long is your longest cable run? What's the nominal impedance of your speakers (in particular the speaker with the longest cable run)?

See the table here (scroll down a little) to confirm minim gauge required.

Hi Al where can I purchase this cable from? My local wholesaler doesn't stock it.

I'm currently looking at either this http://www.radioparts.com.au/product/05101150/12g2c152m-12awg-2-core-speaker-cable-500ft-roll-lszh-reelex-white-b#.WWg0gISGPcu

or

https://www.renovatorstore.com.au/fire-rated-premium-in-wall-speaker-cable-12awg-100m.html

About the same price per metre but one has less strands thicker wire.

Thanks

L&H middy. we used to have TCC who were an agent. I would just ring tycab up direct off their website and ask for who your local reseller is. its used quite a bit by installers i understand as its good quality, local made and well insulated for in house runs and very affordably priced rather than buying some chinese rubbish that will likely be oxidising on the roll as I've seen some of it do in jay car and such :D

I agree cheap and badly constructed cables are not worth bothering with.

I wouldn't expect cables constructed in China to have any such issues, as long as they use good quality materials, composition and constructed to a rigid spec?

I just used Selby speaker cable in my theatre and its great.
I used their 10awg stuff, it is thicker than I needed but allows for any future upgrades.

Some good info here from Red Spade Audio;

http://redspade-audio.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/speaker-cable-what-matters.html

The ideal cable is?

High power antenna cable! RG213/U which is a coaxial cable. The coaxial geometry achieves a very low inductance and this is essential for it's intended application where very high frequencies must run over some distance with minimal loss. The centre conductor has low resistance and the shield can be used for the - cable.

Keep in mind though that this solution can be a bit heavy on the binding posts over time.

Watch getting cables that are excessively thick for the required distance as this can cause potential problems too...

Speaker Impedance 8 Ohm Load 6 Ohm Load  4 Ohm Load
Wire Gauge Distance (ft)  Distance (ft) Distance (ft)
18 AWG 10  8 5
16 AWG 20  15 10
14 AWG 35  30 20
12 AWG 60  45 30
10 AWG 100  75 50

I just got an email back from tycab saying the linear crystal has a MOQ of 4km (a bit more than I need) and they suggested I use an alternative tysonic which is purple type

yeah probably from then direct !!! they dont sell in rolls through resellers ? thats where i last got some from and was in a roll of 50m if I remember which was just fine for my 4 surrounds. the tysonics I've used too and is just fine. I used for my in ceiling 3D audio speakers. did they tell you who sells that in rolls ?

My question to them was where can I buy it so wasn't much help. I called my local middy's but they still haven't called back. Any chance you could please provide details of the Middy's you got it from? They might be able to post it down.

L&H was ages ago, not sure even there anymore. audio trends was my other source but again probably too far back. tycab should be able to tell you who their retailers are ? do they want to sell any :D  who sells the tysonic  if can buy the same from them as well ? TCC has gone by the way sides so not much point me quoting as my most recent purchase year or so ago.

I have just been advised that the Tycab cable is no longer sold. The other cable is not heavy enough. I want to use something that is double shielded so I will probably just go the Digihaus as I only need 100m and the Doss is only available in 152m rolls.

I understand Al's concerns about chinese cable after the Infinity electrical cable debacle, but the Digihaus stuff should be fine.

Tycab in dandenong will sell to you direct over the counter

there you go. I cant imagine its not sold. perhaps its installer only and no ,longer retailer. even the tysonic unless going some ridiculous lengths its also going to be perfectly good for surrounds and such. again just working within recommendations :)

Option1:

Ok.  Tycab cable sold is many variants.

Is the 6mm 2 core automotive stuff the exact same copper as their audio cable?

Digihaus cable,  is this Chinese? I was told its Australian copper sent over and made in China? Is their 12awg anygood?

My first preference was blu jean 10awg, but the Aussie dollar is too low..

I need cable for 4 x rear bookshelf surround speakers. My runs are alittle longer as i need run cable management in a rack then around the room, and believe in matching cable length to all 4 x surround speakers.

20m to 25m runs are required, 8ohm rated speakers , focal 706 series. Unsure if 12awg is sufficient? Most charts i read say 20m is the max run for 12awg at 4ohms. The speakers drop to 3.2ohms i believe.

Other question, is there harm using a 4core smaller cable not twisting two cores for each spreaker terminal, is there any harm or effect on sound quality?
