Whatmough m202 speakers - worth repairing?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I recently picked up a pair of Whatmough 202 speakers but one needs a tweeter replaced. Just wondering how much this would cost and whether you think it would be worth it for these speakers. Or should I just spend the money towards another set of comparable speakers. Also any general feedback on these speakers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Are these the 202 speakers you have .If so I heard these when Colin first released them and the lead lined version of the 202. They were a great sounding speaker .There was different Focal tweet's & midbass drivers over the years .

Pat from War Audio would be the best person to find a replacement tweeter or midbass . If you can't get the same , Pat might be able help you out with a latter inverted dome tweeter from Focal and advise about any cross-over changes .

The other person to ask would be Greg from Osborn Speakers ,he use's /used Focal . Pat from War Audio was the Australian distributor for Focal .

Hi Mal. Yes they look like my speakers. Thank you for your advice- will follow up with Pat when I get a chance. How much would replacement (non-original) tweeters cost approximately? Thanks LT

What I can remember the original weren't that expensive in that range . Stay with Focal .

What colour are the tweeters ,if their yellow they are early inverted kevlar which could be hard to find.

these are a beautiful sounding speaker they are still a current model and retail at $11,499 they perform well above price range.

      Whatmough S33i 3-Way Floor-Standing Speakers
The Whatmough S33i floor standing speakers are the ultimate speaker in the Whatmough Signature series. Their design and built quality are up to the audiophile standards.  The S33i delivers truly spectacular sound.
The Signature S33i are based on the Performance Series P33i, with significant improvements to bring them up to Signature Series status.
This cabinet design offers more than just great looks – they also offer improved sound quality.  By eliminating internal parallel surfaces, the curved surfaces offer clearer and cleaner sound by minimizing internal standing waves.  Even more significantly, the curved panels are inherently more rigid and less resonant than the flat panels of a conventional speaker cabinet, which further helps to minimize coloration.
The Signatures S33i uses the same Ring Radiator tweeter that is used in Whatmough’s flagship speaker, the Paragon. This ultra-expensive tweeter sounds incredibly fast and detailed while also sounding extremely smooth and open. It has a very flat response extending to beyond 40KHz.
The Signature S33i uses a 100mm cellulous fibre coned mid-range driver. This driver has the speed and transparency no bass/mid driver can match.
The Signature S33i uses two 170mm fiberglass/nomex hybrid drivers especially developed for these speakers. The cone for this speaker is made of Nomex with a skin of fiberglass. This long throw driver uses a 33mm high temperature voice coil and a large double magnet system.
This driver has very high power handling as well as a very transparent detailed sound quality.
The S33i uses high grade audiophile film and foil capacitors in critical positions.  Air cored coils are used throughout, wound from a heavier grade of high purity Australian copper.
The perfect partner in the Signature Series system featuring the S8i in the centre and P12i or PFX3i speakers in the rear for a truly exceptional home cinema surround sound experience.
The S33i is fully made in Australia.
3-way bass reflex enclosure using two 170mm hybrid fibre cone long elbow bass drivers, a 100mm cellulose fibre midrange driver and a 35mm dual concentric tweeter with wave guide centre plug.

      Extra Info:
This is one of the most musical subs I have heard but I now have Whatmough Signature 33s and a sub is not required.
      Product Description
Whatmough Impact 2 Active Subwoofer  - Extreme low level of distortion with very clean, powerful and tight bass, this subwoofer is capable of producing accurate low musical notes below 20Hz at remarkably high volume levels.  The tight bass extension of this subwoofer is acoustically controlled without the usage of equalisation.
The Impact2 uses a 250mm extremely long throw driver which has a huge 75mm huge voice coil for a higher power handling and a massive magnet structure.  This driver alone weighs over 10 kgs.  Because it has such a long throw (36mm linear throw), this driver is capable of higher output than most 305mm driver, yet its smaller size allows it to be  noticeably faster and tighter.  A true audiophile subwoofer …

B&W 702 S2 presented by 'The Audio Experts'

It has been over two years since the club was presented with a demonstration from the top-of-the-range B&W speakers, the 800 D3's. Back then, we were introduced to a lot of new innovations that has re-invented this model. In keeping with B&W's philosophy of trickle down technology, the new 702 S2 features many of the new technology from the 800 series.
This month we have 'The Audio Experts' aka Whatmough Audio, presenting at the MAC the new 702 S2 floor standing speaker, and its matching bookshelf model, the 705 S2. The speakers will be demonstrated with the same amplifier from PASS LABS the Model 60, while a Marantz KI Pearl SACD player will be playing the tunes.
B&W has used its new 'Continuum' midrange cone in the 700 series, replacing the old yellow coloured Kevlar design, and have included the 'tweeter-on -top' technology seen on the 800 series. Sitting in its own aluminium machined pod, the 25mm 'Carbon Dome' tweeter is decoupled from the cabinet. The 702 S2 is a conventional rectangular box that houses a 150mm Continuum FST Midrange driver that is also decoupled from the main box. A set of three 165mm Aerofoil drivers look after the bass frequencies.
Like the siblings in the 700 series, the 705 S2 features the new carbon tweeter dome that is more rigid than its previous model, with its first breakup mode now reaching out to 47 Khz. Around the back is the B&W characteristically 'dimpled' reflex port. Supplied with the speakers is a pair of foam bungs (full or half) to accommodate various room placements. The main 165mm mid/bass driver is the new silver coloured Continuum design, said to reach down to 45Hz.
With a number of significant upgrades to the new 702/705 models, they offer a taste of the 800-series sound without spending serious money. Will you be putting them on your Christmas list?
