Community TV given 6 month extension

Recommended Posts

Community TV stations, which had previously been told they had to shut down by the end of 2016 (& before that, the end of 2015, and ...) have been given another last-minute extension. This time it's 6 months.

A statement from Fifield said: “Spectrum is a scarce and valuable community resource which the government needs to manage in a way that delivers best value to the Australian public.

“The government is considering a variety of options for using the vacated broadcast spectrum, including for the trialling of next-generation broadcasting technologies that could enable new services for viewers, such as the terrestrial broadcast of ultra-high definition 4K television.”

In a statement today, shadow minister Michelle Rowland said while the decision was welcomed, it exemplified the government’s “lack of vision for the media and communications sector, their flawed decision-making and their inability to execute a plan”.

The spin doctors are doing their usual, with the above quote from Mitch Fifield, not to be confused with the gentleman quoted below.

A quote from tonight's Mediawatch;

And Field also argues that the government’s claim of spectrum being needed to test 4K signals is a furphy:

MATTHEW FIELD: There are currently no tests planned … The reality is that if we are switched off in December then our spectrum, which is mandated to be used for TV broadcasting, will remain vacant for a number of years.”

— Matthew Field, General Manager Channel 31, Statement to Media Watch, 30 June, 2017

Mediawatch

Yep I watched that.

Very poor excuses coming out... let's just let NewsCorp control everything and all will be fine. :rolleyes:

What is happening with Community TV?

The six month extension for community TV was supposed to expire on Sunday night but C31 in Meloubrne and presumably the other community stations in Adelaide and Perth are still on the air.

However, C31's programs in the online TV guide end at 6am on Sunday, January 7.  WTV's programs end at midnight on Saturday night, January 6 while 44 Adelaide's programs keep going.
