Oppo Uhd 4K Player

Recommended Posts

Picked mine up this arvo.  Store had 15 arrive today....nine where gone by 4:00 PM.

Anyway yesterday was the sixth anniversary of my BDP-93 arriving.  Ordered it from US before they opened up sales to the rest of the world.  Had it shipped to a mate in Canada who posted it on to me.  Must say this purchase was much easier.

Will it only have Dolbyvision lite if they say all it requires will be a firmware update?

Cwt, I can imagine these being subtly useful for 44.1kHz sources,  with the Nyquist frequency of 22.05KHz being quite close to 20kHz, the generally accepted upper limit of young adult hearing, and with trade-offs between a fully extended treble response and certain minor artefacts arising from a sharp roll-off. So if an audiophile wished to play a CD with output to a dedicated two channel amplifier with analogue inputs, these adjustments could well come significant. (I do wonder a little though why a two channel audiophile wouldn't already have and use a CD transport/player rather than using a Blu-ray player, however good.)

However what is today's audiophile view about the usefulness of such adjustments for the 48kHz sample rate typically used for Blu-ray discs, with its Nyquist frequency of 24kHz? Indeed would the Oppo's DACs be likely to be used at all for a multichannel Blu-ray source, given today's tendency to allow AVRs to process the sound in the digital domain, including Audyssey style digital processing?

Yes MLXXX ; reminds me of the similar filters Cambridge Audio put into their standalone dacs so handy for 2ch but not so much multichannel . With todays object audio decoding theres less reason too for multichannel analogs as the oppo et al will never have the metadata decoded in the player . A transport would be nice without any analogs so decoding bass management dsp processing is done once without needless duplication :)

Dolby vision lite duke ? Only DV around is the 12bit version with variable metadata that is a step up from the HDR10 with static metadata we have atm . See if you can see the connection with the mediatek chip in the oppo with the following mention :)

Quote

In order to read the Dolby Vision enhancement and to reconstruct the full fidelity 12-bit master, certain decoding blocks are needed on the chipset in the UHD Blu-ray player. These chips are forthcoming from Mediatek and will ultimately enable players with Dolby Vision.”

Rang today after rumours of shortages btw ; there due tomorrow in Newcastle B)

good to hear woofer ! what processor are you running. your key I think is the 7m AQ cable. the custom res you are using sounds good will explore ... did you make any other video settings ? have you tried a pal dvd as yet ?

unfortunately I run a 10m and check out this post from claw over in the states after I posted the res oppo is pumping out on Auto ...

so yeah as thought oppo are pushing it to the max for their main menu, goodness knows why ! same mistake samsung made when it first came out ! you'd think they'd learn from their fail ... but I guess if sammy could fix it you'd hope oppo can as well and sort the main menu so it doesnt push things to the max. will explore claw's suggestions hopefully can find something in the interim that is a better compromise with their custom resolution...

Wow! The only bit-depth legal for 4:2:2 is 12-bit. And we have seen reports before that the JVC does not report a bit-depth when it gets a 4:2:2 12-bit signal. So the Oppo is sending 4K50 4:2:2 12-bit. That is a 17.8 Gbps signal, just as bad as the Samsung and its 4K60 4:4:4 8-bit for the home screen.

I wonder if the JVC even supports 4K50/60 4:2:2 at 12-bit?

You must not have resolution set to Direct like Dave has. If you did the menu should be 1080p.

Edit: It appears the JVC does support it:

Compatible with full spec native 4K signals such as 4K60p 4:4:4 4K60p 4:2:2/36bit and 4K24p 4:4:4/36bit

Assuming you have Output Resolution set to Auto, I would suggest trying with Color Space at 4:4:4 and 4:2:0 instead of Auto and see what the Oppo sends to the Marantz for the Home Menu screen.

Color Space [ Auto | RGB Video Level | RGB PC Level | YCbCr 4:4:4 | YCbCr 4:2:2 | YCbCr 4:2:0 ]

reportedly street release date and price is different to actually having the unit to use in a system and enjoy. There were many rumours on the release date and was letting people know as i think most have been pre sold.

Woohoo ! CLAW has put me right ! have asked him if I can send him a present for christmas !

I have the oppo working seamlessly across uhd blu-ray, blu-ray and DVD yes even my pal dvd ! :D they all play and no fiddling with resolutions in between to get them going... and the oppo menu hey it comes up as well...without also fiddling around with resolution settings.

He is correct, as I reported back earlier that both direct and custom 1080p auto do bring up the oppo menu at 1080p50

however it is trying hiscolour space suggestion that has brought me success.

Taking it off Auto I did try YCbCr 4:4:4 however no go with menu page could not get it up to even check resolution coming through. however it is YCbCr 4:2:0 I have had sucess with and across the board with all formats of disc have thrown at it and the menu ! all coming up on screen with the jvc :)

below is what I get now for the oppo home menu as displayed by the jvc,
31660200095_c6a06dbe8a_c.jpg

as displayed by the marantz,

31287568120_ea3693319e_c.jpg

loading a uhd blu-ray,
this is what I get reported by the marantz,
30850199163_03edfd3df8_c.jpg

and what I get reported by the jvc, for uhd blu-ray
31544418121_3a54640de8_c.jpg

moving across to Blu-ray via the marantz,
30850192843_09a288a824_c.jpg

via the jvc, for blu-ray
31287567340_3cfa825d2a_c.jpg

and finally for DVD (pal)via the jvc
31544447471_38f65f1c5b_c.jpg

via the marantz for DVD(pal)
31660240545_13f606626c_c.jpg

pretty happy with that ! :D
not that know if there are any downsides ? anything that I should be concerned about ? is this a good thing across formats with what is being reported above for each ?

oppo describes the YCbCr 4:2:0 as the same as the color space thats on the discs. though says its experimental feature and only supports uhd 60hz and 50hz video output...

and seems to work ! so now I have the oppo working across auto, direct and custom 1080p auto for the main menu. and on the auto setting with the color space set on YCbCr 4:2:0 can now play seamlessly across discs... hooray !

be nice if oppo sorts out their main menu regardless, and make possible so things like DVD pal can play natively. and thats putting aside the switching across dual displays that doesnt seem to work.

and all aside I think finally now in a good place... and happy to now look to the next stage... eg exploring HDR stripping and such ...plus other disc plays back dvda/sacd etc...

And in reality, cheaper.

Oh Sands, don't rub it in :-)

Mind you 'bragging rights' are never cheap and it was the first BDP-93 in the country....I think and need to keep thinking that to justify the extra cost :o

Bragging Rights are priceless.........

It will be good to see a demo side by side on identical  displays of 4k and 2k, or is it 1k, with no bias tweaking.

Got my 2 units today.

Connected one up to my JVC X7000 with a 7mtr Audiquest Coffee HDMI cable.

Have "NOT" had one issue/glitch with the Oppo and the JVC...

Set output res on the Oppo to CUSTOM...Set Output  res to 4K 24p.

If you set output colour to a value other than AUTO, it will show up in the JVC info screen.

Very fast disc load time and menu access..

VERY impressed with the picture on the JVC .

Running HDR,  my X7000 is maxed for brightness on my 143" scope Screen... Also on HDR the iris in non functional, and this is a real minus.

Striping the HDR and running SDR rec2020 is superb!!!!  It has all the gorgeous colours of HDR , but has much much more brightness and the iris is fully operational . Absolutely gorgeous pictures!!

Are you saying you have the Oppo menu showing at 4k resolution? @:) al and @Kazz have only had it display at 1080p from my understanding.

Have you run the firmware update yet?

as per my latest note above from wee hours, I have oppo main menu at 4k and one res setting across all disc forms. :)

I've got all three res settings also working for the oppo main menu it was a color space thing. oppo in their infernal wisdom have on Auto on color space it goes  to 4:2:2 color space which results in 17.8 Gbps a feather under the max possible over hdmi standard. Completely un necessary and will be a challenge for any cables over 7m. If change color space off Auto to 4:2:0 which is what the original format is on disc and still 4k 50 this pulls back to 13.4 Gbps which most cables should be capable off :)

which bit arent you having joy with pete. am working around the oppo's issues at the present :)

managed to get with the right color space setting, the oppo working across all disc forms ... without having to twiddle with the resolution settings all the time. thats a huge bonus.

oppo still have to fix the res of their main menu which pushes through at 17.8 Gbps (pretty much the limit of hdmi) which is plain silly and unnecessary for a menu ! sammy for instance only runs at 7.8 Gbps which his a lot more easy on hdmi cables and not anywhere near the limits.

i'll explore again the dual screens and legacy screen issue on the weekend not got over this initial hurdle of just having the mainmenu coming up :D

the sammy at this stage I have to say is a lot more seamless in use... bullet proof even....as crazy as this might seem.

That doesn't strike me as crazy. The Samsung UHD player is aimed at the cheap end of the price spectrum and Samsung would expect a relatively high volume of sales. The design and the testing for ease of use would need to be comprehensive with the player being intended for use by a broad range and number of customers. The Oppo product on the other hand is rather specialised in nature.

Still it does seem a very basic bug for the Oppo to refuse to deliver a picture at all! I'd have thought something in the menu would be available for it to be set up to play a UHD disc with reduced resolution for a Full HD TV. Surely there must be a way around this!

I get the same message that you get. Unless I use the audio HDMI to split the signal, and send the video signal directly to the TV..

What are the settings on your Marantz ? Thanks

So the 4.2.0 setting is on the Oppo @:) al ? And this also works on the Pio?

Have been out all day and have only just finally gotten through the posts on AVS, long slog as that thread is moving at a phenomenal pace.

I purchased this player just over a year ago for my HT build, which not completed so this player has had very little use (one bluray and a few SACD’s).  Now, I am ripping all my movies to a file server so have no use for it in the HT.  I also need the funds for other upgrades.

It’s in new condition apart from a small scratch on the face of the device, but it is only noticeable when close up and in a certain light. Comes with the genuine Oppo rack mount kit, which was an additional option at the time of purchase. I no longer have the original box but still have all the accessories (with small box) and Oppo bag.
