Sydney Audio Club - 14Th April - Nad M-Series & Tannoy Dc8T's By Apg & Len Wallis

Recommended Posts

For anyone interested in this line up, your welcome to attend.

The April 2013 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company.

Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

This month we will have a system comprising of NAD and Tannoy provided by Audio Products (refer to http://www.audioproducts.com.au/) and Len Wallis Audio (refer to http://www.lenwallisaudio.com/). We will also have Scott Collins (Audio Products Marketing Manager) and Himal Jekishan of Audio Products in attendance.

For 40 years NAD has been regarded as a market leader in high quality affordable electronics. Today, whilst still producing excellent affordable models, NAD is now recognised around the world as the manufacturer of some of the world's most advanced digital audio products. At the club meeting, we will presenting its acclaimed Masters Series models.

From the NAD Masters Series, Len Wallis Audio is kindly providing a M2 Direct Digital Amplifier (2 x 250W) which has received many awards and accolades including a ‘Product of the Year’ award from The Absolute Sound. (Refer to http://www.lenwallis...ed-amplifier/m2 and http://www.audioprod...fo.aspx?pid=M-2).

The M2 integrated amplifier will be driving a pair of Tannoy Definition DC8T’s which are the result of the refinement of over 80 years of audio heritage. The Definition series feature Tannoy’s Dual Concentric™ design which positions the tweeter at the centre of the cone to yield outstanding time coherence and true point source articulation with no energy loss through the crossover region. (Refer to https://audioproduct...px?pid=DEFDC8TB)

The main front-end will be a NAD C 546BEE CD Player (refer to https://audioproduct...px?pid=C546BEEG). There will also be a NAD M51 Direct Digital DAC on hand (refer to https://audioproduct...o.aspx?pid=M-51).

The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD (or CD/SACD hybrid) or flash drives. Sorry, no vinyl this month. All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind.

Members and Guests welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door.

Venue: Epping Creative Centre

Address: 26 Stanley St, Epping

When: Sunday 14th April

Doors open 1pm

Meeting starts at 2pm

Best regards,

Tom Waters

Item: NAD M51 DAC (and digital pre)
      Location: Sydney
      Price: SOLD (elsewhere)
Item Condition: 8 - Very Good (operationally excellent, cosmetically has a scratch on the top plate, see photo)
Reason for selling: Shift in direction to Pre/DAC with analogue inputs too...
Payment Method: Paypal (+ fee), EFT, Pickup - Cash,
      Extra Info:

For sale is my trusty NAD M51 DAC. It offers a lovely sound, and excellent flexibility as it can operate as a digital pre-amp also (it worked beautifully into my PS Audio Stellar S300). It was well & copiously reviewed upon release around 6 years ago. I've had this unit for 3 years. It has been kept in the rack in a smoke + pet free environment.

The unit is in very good condition. Operationally, it is excellent. Cosmetically, it has a scratch on the top plate (see photo), otherwise its great. It comes with original boxes and remote.

      NAD says (https://nadelectronics.com/product/m51-direct-digital-dac/):
"One of our Masters Series’ finest components to date, the M51 Direct Digital™ DAC uses the same high precision digital processing as our groundbreaking M2 Direct Digital Amplifier, but in a new format that easily interfaces with high performance analogue components, including our M22 Stereo Power Amplifier. With features such as extremely low noise, low distortion, wide dynamic range, superb linearity and exceptionally low digital jitter, the M51 will help bring your home theatre system to life. With the ability to accept PCM data rates up to 24 bit/192kHz, the M51 makes it perfect for listening to high resolution downloads, allowing you to hear your favourite songs in the best audio quality possible. Possessing two HDMI inputs and one output with video pass through, the M51 seamlessly becomes the heart of a video 2.0 system, further displaying the M51’s remarkable versatility and innovation..."

"While the M51 includes the industry standard SPDIF, AES/EBU, Optical and Coaxial inputs, it also includes the latest USB technology called USB Audio Class 2. USB Audio Class 2 supports sample rates of 192kHz releasing the previous limitation of USB at 96kHz. A device USB port is included allowing direct connection of a PC or Mac.

The M51 offers two HDMI inputs and one output with video pass through. This opens up the possibility of using the M51 Direct Digital DAC as the heart of a “Video 2.0” system using the mandatory two-channel linear PCM soundtrack from Blu-ray or DVD to make a compelling two-channel high definition theatre presentation. Many symphony orchestras and some specialty music labels are also released in HD recordings on Blu-ray or DVD. The M51 is fully 3D video compatible but there is no surround sound decoding or video processing...."

      Reviewers said:
(Stereophile) "I admit to having been a little suspicious at first of the PCM-to-PWM approach that NAD has taken in the M51. That was before I'd had a chance to live with it for a couple months. Nothing raised an eyebrow, and the claimed benefits in jitter rejection and filter design have obviously paid off.

I prefer DACs that reveal as much as possible about what was captured on the tape or in the digits, and couldn't care less about adding a rose-colored tint to dodgy digital sound. In this regard, the NAD M51 succeeds with a wonderfully detailed and revealing sound best described as honest, with a friendly smile. And it was a pleasure to listen to.

      In other words, bitstream brilliance."

      (What Hifi - https://www.whathifi.com/nad/m51/review)
"The M51 sounds sensational. In fact, we’d go further than that by saying it’s one of the best NAD separates we’ve heard in recent memory."

      (SoundStageHifi - https://www.soundstagehifi.com/index.php/equipment-reviews/498-nad-masters-m51-direct-digital-digital-to-analog-converter)
"The DAC market is a crowded place. To make any headway, a new entrant -- even one from a thoroughly established brand like NAD -- needs to offer something special. Feature-wise, the Masters M51 matches its competition, and ups the ante with those two HDMI inputs and its pass-through facility, making it the only high-end DAC of which I’m aware that really fits in the two-channel home-theater space ... The M51’s sound, too, is something a bit different. Other DACs take a tighter hold on the music, tease out more detail, or create a better-defined soundstage. What the Masters M51 offers is a sound that’s smooth, laid-back, and always pleasant, no matter what you throw at it. Its slight favoring of the midrange imbues the sound with just a hint of extra warmth. For many listeners, such a combination is a recipe for audio bliss."

Yamaha has an illustrious history of manufacturing superlative audio equipment dating back to the late 70’s. In some ways it is unfortunate that their (very good) commercially focused products often steal the limelight.

A couple of years ago Yamaha launched a range of very high quality amplifiers and CD players competing with some of the most prestigious manufacturers on the market.
We must admit to being a little skeptical when they announced they were going to release an integrated amplifier at twice the price of a basic Krell but concerns were ill-founded!

All models are available in both silver and black fascia, but Yamaha took the unusual approach of offering a range of timber side panels in different finishes. As it transpires some of these finishes have proven to be more popular than
others, and as a result we have been able to negotiate a very heavily discounted price on the less popular colours.

      The available models are:

AS1100 Integrated amplifier. Black Facia with Dark Brown side panels. RRP: $2,599             Sell: $1,699
AS1100 Integrated amplifier. Silver Facia with Gloss Black side panels. RRP: $2,599             Sell: $1,699
AS2100 Integrated amplifier. Black Facia with Dark Brown side panels. RRP: $3,999             Sell: $2,499
AS2100 Integrated amplifier. Silver Facia with Gloss Black side panels. RRP: $3,999             Sell: $2,499
AS3000 Integrated amplifier. Silver Facia with Gloss Black side panels. RRP: $8,999             Sell: $5,499
CDS1000 CD Player. Black Facia with Dark Brown side panels. RRP: $2,299               Sell: $1,699
CDS2100 CD Player. Silver Facia with Gloss Black side panels. RRP: $2,999               Sell: $1,999
CDS3000 CD Player. Black Facia with Dark Brown side panels. RRP: $7,499               Sell: $4,999
CDS3000 CD Player. Silver Facia with Gloss Black side panels. RRP: $7,499               Sell: $4,999

It is difficult to convey the craftsmanship that has gone into this product. This is truly a beautifully constructed range, the type of product that instils pride of ownership; type of components you’re likely to own for a very long time. Almost as a bonus there is more than enough performance and musically on offer match this series elegant looks.
