Panasonic TV Owners & Discussion Thread

That is a good choice, I would go with the plasma as well, bigger, better PQ to LCDs around the same price range.

As long as the kids aren't prone to walk out and leave console games still running or pausing a show and leaving the room for a second, and then not returning back to the room until a few hours later.

If the above is not an issue, then 42" all the way at $998

Are all the Pana plasma screens supposed to have a protective film around outside black frame when you unpack them? I got a pz 50 800a in mid dec. only to find that it had rectangle rub marks at the bottom corners of the surround that appear to be made from rubbing on the polystyrene packing. Complained to retailer and panasonic and the retailer replaced. Went to pick up today (250km round trip!) and opened up box at retailers only to find same problem again. Panasonic support stated that all screens should have the protector. Ended up bringing home original screen, now awaiting third time lucky plasma to turn up. If it wasn't such an outstanding tv I would have told them to jam it and buy something else. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi,

When I received my 50PZ800A it had something similar on the top right hand corner. I thought it was finger marks from unpacking and installing the TV. It looked like a scuff mark on the glass that wouldn't wipe off. The screen didn't come with any protective coating. As my TV is in a fairly dark room, it can't be seen, so I have chosen to live with it - that combined with the fact that the picture looked so fabulous I didn't want to part with it :)

I unpacked my Dad's 50PZ80A and it didn't have any sort of protective coating on the screen either.

I was looking at a 32" LCD for about $850-900, but I generally prefer the PQ on Plasmas to LCDs and I saw the 42PX8A at Dick Smith for $975.

Hey Zelig

Which Dick Smith did you see this at??

I popped in today and I saw one for $997 and they wouldn't go lower

waiting for better promo for  42PY800 , anyone know what is the price now . BD in IMM $2499 + 400 voucher

For the free HT , did it have HDMI output.

Lastly , was also considering Pioneer 428 , anyone bought the PY instead of 428 and why ?

The free HT (SC-PT160) pretty pathetic. Opened the box and put it back again.  No HDMI.  I think in the near future, maybe most brands would bundle their sets with Blu-ray players.

It seemed like what you said had come true.

Just checked out the TH42/50-PY800 tvs...they are now bundled with Pana BD30 blu-ray player.

No more voucher, no more sub-standard HT....

Need an advice from owners of TH42/50-PY800 tvs...

I am buying a centre speaker of height 170 mm. I have no other choices, but to put the speaker right in front of the TV. Correct me if i am wrong, but anything above 150 mm is gonna block the screen.

Do ya know of any ways to raise the tv's table stand to accomodate a centre speaker ?

One way is of course to mount the tv...but for that, i would need to get the Pana installers to check as i am not sure if it can be mounted on my wooden feature wall(thickness abt 100 mm) which sounded kind of hollow inside. To make things worse, there are some switches on it, which may bump onto the mounted tv.

Thus, i would need to re-think to consider another speaker / TV, if really necessary.

Tkx.

I understand some place allow you to backdate  to last year and you can claim the voucher.  Maybe I should check with Courts if they can do that and get this PY800 at  <2000 .

Still thinking hard on this purchase , as i will be buying the "technology" and not the colour ( compare to 428 , they also offer better HTS)

I bought the TH 50PZ80A before xmas and my screen bezel also had those marks, there was no protective covering for the bezel

I easily got rid of all the marks (which were quite bad) using the supplied cleaning cloth after heavy breathing on the mark hahahahaha

If this does not work for you try using a product called 'DeSolveIt' which is made from citrus fruit

If my memory serves me right, it was going for $3099 at Megatex 3 weeks ago with the "usual" vouchers.

Seems you are paying quite a fair bit for Panasonic BD-30 blu-ray player (unless you forgot to mention any extra freebies).

Regarding the height (for wall-mount), it should be 700mm from the floor.

You would then be able to mount your centre speaker just below the set and "hide" cables going up to your TV (presumably you have a sideboard or something in front).

Any higher would be straining your neck when you sit on the floor.

Thanks for the tv mounting tips. Problem is that my feature wall may not be strong enuff, have to ask the Pana guys to check. If this is possible, centre speaker prob will be solved.

$3099 for TH50PY800H ?? You sure ?  :o

I went through three (that's right three!) 50PZ800A back in Nov-Dec with the same problem everytime (marks on the bezel). In all cases, the marks appeared to be caused by rubbing from the plastic packaging. I was fed up after the third TV and got my money back. Wouldn't be surprised the TVs go back to the warehouse and end up with the next unlucky customer. I am now looking towards the SAMSUNG LCD's.

I took delivery of a TH-50PZ800A in recent times and there are 4 strips of protective tape on the corners at the front of the TV, and I would assume these would match up with where the packaging would meet the actual TV. So, I guess Panasonic are listening to some of the complaints.

Unfortunately, being a sad egg I still haven't taken the tape off so I shall make a point of removing it tonight to ensure there are no marks

So a few little rub marks are more important than a better PQ

What is important to me is to get what I pay for. If I was purchasing a second hand or shop floor item, then I would accept such defects. When paying hard earned cash for such an item I would expect the TV to come out of the box in pristine condition. I gave them three goes to get it right and they couldn't.

Regarding PQ, that is down to the individual. FWIW, the 9 series Samsungs aren't bad in that regard.

+1 for get what you pay for. If I had purchased a brand new car I would expect it in new condition. Gets down to poor packaging on Panasonic's behalf.
