Got it today around 40 minutes back!

The guy who sold it to me at Sony Centre, George St, Sydney CBD ( Jonathan ) personally delivered it at home!!

Very nice and knowledgeable guy!

Will be viewing a few movies and reviewing the same over the weekend!

Cheers,

Varun

I will check today and post.

The picture quality seems to be quite good to my untrained eyes- but then, for me PS3 also has excellent PQ.

I think the main differrence in PQ would be visible in Bigger Screens,

I have the Sony Bravia KDL-46X3100.

Construction seems to be elegant but not very impressive. Currently, I am using it on my current 5.1 Sony HT for sound and it is quite impressive.

I am sure with STRDA5400ES, the sound would be even better. I still have to connect that, which I intend to do over the weekend.

For sound, I have to buy speakers before I can fully make use of the STRDA5400ES.

Cheers,

Varun

Yes, they are still made in Japan. And I had just blanked out the serial number for obvious reasons:P

Nice buy Varun. How is the disc loading time on this model? I've got the BDP-S500, wondering how it compares with regard to that operation?

I've run across Jonathon too, very helpful - that's good service. I just wish Sony Centre would cleanup/update their projection room.

Congratulations fellow owners. I haven't opened mine as yet as I just got home now but will report soon enough. All I can say is the box is fairly heavy! The guy from Sony Central Melbourne said I was the first to pick it up but he's delivering a couple next week.

Will take some pictures as time permits and report on PQ on the Sony 46" Bravia LCD.

I had a steak & chips and a VB for dinner :)

Now how Aussie can you possibly get?

Opened it up - wow it's really quite nice. Excellent build quality which is what I expected. Will take some pictures later as I'm going up to visit my dear Mum.

Cheers

well here it is landed home still in the box, purr...

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=att...ost&id=5714

reminds me so much of the 9000es sacd player I have

unpacked and inplace its an absolute beauty

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=att...ost&id=5715

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=att...ost&id=5716

quick switch on and takes you through a setup process.

not the most intuitive menu system ala ps3 I understand

anyways click the bd button and it says check the memory port and switch off/on again. aha must want its card. gees that would have most people quizzed. find the card and plug it in and all good :)

discs really do load up ultra fast as is its switch on. the disc drawer is like its running on silk ! very nice defintely has the sense of quality fit and finish and build about it. a good step up from my pio lx70a I must say.

audio wise it by default is set on internally decoding so remember to set audio on "direct" if want to bitstream.

the remote is nice and backlights if needed. and at all times the player is quiet, and runs cool.

the display button does not cycle through ouput display settings. it is the onscreen display that shows time and signal res, audio details etc. it moves and navigates BD very nicely :)

both audio and video on mr & mrs smith looks very nice. thats using the on board scaler set to auto on it thats outputing 1080i to my hitachi. audio bitstreams dts-hd ma just fine.

and now the big very important test for me as in DVD.

a very big relief to find it plays region 1, 2, 4 and region 0 DVDs so yeah region free on dvd out the box. yipee !

dvd is very nice too upscaled outputing 1080i 50hz/60hz and navigation and loading works very nicely.

any grumbles ? ....yep

would have liked a display/ouput button on the remote ala the pios where can switch the output res on the fly. but guess can access that via the menu or maybe can set one of its buttons to do so ?

not sure a big fan of the ps3 style menu at the start. would rather give it the flick.

warranty ? a big dissapointment. and made the store guys aware of that. they too thought it should be 3 years but is only 1 year. I will take this up with sony as in the us they get 5 years. not sure why we should get gipped. not like its less reliable here or something

but yeah all up... this is it for me !

perhaps early to say... but have to say ...ah finally a BD player that does all for me on BD/DVD, all as it should and is a class player both in operation and looks / styling & build :)

I also picked up my player today.

I was told by the salesperson that one of the features of this unit was that not only was is DVD Region free but also Blu-ray Region Free!!! I am not certain this is true but obviously it would be a great benefit if it is. Unfortunately I don't expect my Region A Blu-ray discs for another week so can one of the other owners check and see wheter this is true and get back to us?

Now if it was Region Free for BD that would be extraordinary but I don't have any Region A disks in order to verify. Actually I think the Region A Metal Gear Solid 4 U.S Game I have has a BD Disk that is only Region A (Even though the game itself is Region Free). I'll give it a crack.

Greta pics Al - saves me taking any until it's in Situ! Funny thing is my dog licked and sniffed the box like he does with anything new I get :)

I was told by Chris Scully at Sony Central the reason for the delay in getting the players out was 'Reconfiguration' of the player for our market.

All in all a fine player from what I have seen. Will connect it up tomorrow as it's too late now.

Cheers

now that woudl be a turn up ! has anyone tried any BD other than region B through this as well. I've been carefull to only buy region free of region B so not something I can check out unfortunately.

now one little glitch I have found. if playing 4:3 material on dvd make sure you set to fixed aspect ratio rather than original aspect ratio. bad choice of words from sony and especially since comes as default set to original making 4:3 material stretched. anyways change of selection in the menu and all solved.

the colour and picture is very nice indeed with this player. reminds me of the very natural skin tones used to get withthe denon 2900 I used to have. pics liek the village look very very natural ! watched a bit of fifth element. lovely pics great detail :) I notice the opening has a bit of grain to it. I will come vack and see how the picture enhancer it has deals with that :)
