Bye-bye Ten Hd

WTF! Dual-cast sport on SD and HD now!??!?!??!??!??!?! ARGH. So the journalist isn't as stupid as we thought (even though she still got a few things wrong in her report).

"ONE will be broadcast from early 2Q09 in HD on Channel 1 and will also be available in SD on the network's second SD Channel (Channel 12)

New logo as well

Bloody hell. What an utter waste. SD and HD? And we lose the Thursday night sci-fi programs, too.

Ripped off.

Am I reading that correctly? ONE will be both SD AND HD AND Ten SD for selected sports!? That is three (reduced HD) channels playing the exact thing that I never watch at the moment? Are Ten completely insane!?

Not only that, but it will do the reverse of what Ten wants and push people that want to see amazing National Geographic docos onto Foxtel HD as that will be the only way to see them in HD quality (legally).
Well that, or they could just change the channel to Nine, Seven, Two etc. (hopefully they're stilll legal :)) We're not talking about FTA TV all going to 24x7 sport. Channel 10 has decided to try a particular strategy with this. If it works for them (ie revenue exceeds costs) then they'll stick with it. Otherwise they'll presumably switch back to a more conventional mix of shows.

NB Have to laugh, the ASX statement says Ten will be required to show some of their sport on its primary channel (anti siphoning laws). This would see the event appearing on all three channel 10 shows at once :rolleyes: .

Also interesting that Ten see the SD Sports channel's role as promoting the 'premium' HD channel. This might suggest the second SD channel might now be a 100% simulcast of the HD one. Perhaps being decommissioned to provide extra bandwidth to the HD channel on the BIG events that also appear on the SD 1 channel.

I agree that the SD and HD simulcast is a bit dumb. They should be forcing people to go to HD tuners/decoders. Really, anyone serious about sport shouldn't have much issue with this. And then they're going to flog the HD channel on the SD channel too...

NBA and MLB + College football and basketball is going to put quite a bit of pressure on Foxtel too. I know people who have Foxtel for just those sports.

No.

Channel 1 - Dedicated HD channel for sport 24x7 (but at noticeable inferior quality to what we have now on TenHD due to reduced bitrate)

Channel 10 - Standard SD channel for showing news and other non-sport TV shows

Channel 12 - Downscaled SD version of channel 1 for those without HD STB's.

Obviously there isn't anyone with a clue at Ten as this is going to piss off everyone. Non-sports fans are going to miss out on the HD quality of all the shows they currently watch, and sports fans are going to be pissed off that the picture quality is going to degrade badly from next year - the SD channel may look better with sports that have rapid movement!

Please god, if you have any spare brains the people that work at Ten would really need some right now.

3 channels total. 1 HD + 2 SD

1 = HD Sport

12 = SD Sport (same as 1 otherwise)

10 = SD Normal Programming

Currently 12 is a redirect to 1 (which is HD). So you'll see 12 change from HD to SD. It means 1 extra SD channel which will be at the expense of the HD channel bandwidth

Hi

It will be interesting to see the final mix,i've only glanced thru both reports but it sound like its being set up like C7,a separate Channel. Its only a few Months since Ten said they were committed to broadcasting new release Movies in HD so not sure where's "ONE" HD is going to fit into the sceme of things.

are they basically replacing the current HD channel or are they adding a new HD channel?

The current HD channel will become a dedicated HD sports channel. The only thing different to now is that a new SD channel (12) is being added.

Currently the LCN 12 is just a redirect to the HD stream the same as LCN 1. However LCN 12 will from next year point to an entirely new SD stream which is just a downscaled re-coding of what is shown on LCN 1.

Maybe, just maybe, crossing every finger and toe, the 24x7 sport is on the SD channel, and the premium HD sport is on the HD channel, and we still get our HD non-sport shows we love on the HD channel. GOD GOD GOD may it be so.... (and Alah, and the BSG gods).

Im happy about the dedicated channel of sport but to have the HD channel duplicated in SD is just stupid!!! :( I thought that conroy was changing the regs so that the broadcaster could have 1 HD + 1 SD or 2 SD channels and would stop the anti-siphoning laws from applying to multi-channel FTA DTV.

I suspect 7 & Nein will follow with a Drama channel & something else so each has a specialist channel as part of their version of "FreeView".

What do you mean "no". That would be "yes" - HD (1), SD (12) will be multichannels playing the same content. It also lists that some MUST be shown on their primary channel (10) which would make three channels with the exact same content.

Currently 12 is a redirect to 1 (which is HD). So you'll see 12 change from HD to SD. It means 1 extra SD channel which will be at the expense of the HD channel bandwidth

...which is exactly what I said... Did I miss something?

The issue here isn't anti siphoning (which is basically set to dissapear). Its that only 50% of households in Oz have access to digital and probably only half that to HD digital. The second SD channel is simulcasting the HD one simply to gain the maximum possible audience.

The ASX statement is quite clear that the HD channel will be 100% sport. Its a bit vague on if the second SD one will be 100% simulcast or might simulcast some stuff and at other times show drama etc.
