stroltz
Tried Harvey Norman the other for a price on the 58" 850a and got a price of $6099. Didn't push the issue at all but still not close to that $5700 mark I saw on here a while ago.How is everyone else going with prices? You can get it from www.theelectricdiscounter.com.au for $5989. So you would think HN would match that if pushed. I have decided to save my pennies and wait to read the reports of what is coming from CES in Vegas held early Jan 2009, then either take the plunge on this one or wait for Neo PDP. mmmfreegoo23
After looking the PDP up it does look awesome but is the Neo PDP going to be available in a 58" model and, like when plasmas first came onto the scene, going to be $20,000? smokenz
After looking the PDP up it does look awesome but is the Neo PDP going to be available in a 58" model and, like when plasmas first came onto the scene, going to be $20,000? from what i've heard they aren't going to cost any more than current prices. i really think its better to if you cant wait and you ahve a current crap tv like i do, buy a cheap $1200-$1500 plasma now. then hold out until the new models come. i could easily spend $6k on a plasma now but then i know plasmas are getting to the end of the current technology, adn these new ones coming out next year, complete contrast black, much brighter, thinner, less power consumption, less image noise etc etc. i look at it like the people that bought a pentium 4 top end pc, just before dual cores came out. need a computer, put all that money into it, then boom dual core, pci-e graphics. just a waste of money and bound to disappoint in a year. where as im sure current 60" kuro owners aren't too bothered that the new kuros are better, because the technology is very similar. but new kuro owners could be in to be disappointed come september. diesel
but new kuro owners could be in to be disappointed come september. Pioneer in my view have always been 6-12 months ahead of the competition in terms of plasma tchnology. The Neo plasmas by Panasonic are taking some of the IP of Pioneer as well as some of their own advances, so i don't think current 9th gen Pioneer owners will be anymore disappointed than say 8th gen owners. The last two model cycles have seen big changes for Pioneer plasmas and I'm sure the 10th gen will be a big change too if what has been previewed in warious industry shows is anything to go by, but if you want the best current then you can be happy with buy a 9th gen Pioneer. I just can't justify their prices

Hard to believe they won't be at a price premium. Pana has to recover development costs etc. I've been hanging out for the new 58" pana & don't think I can wait another 12+ months. fawlty99
The 700s are on special everywhere. Yet to see an 850 in the flesh. Too many 700s to clear before getting the new stock out?

You are correct about the 700's being cleared, however do not buy a 58pz700a for $4,999 !! I purchased my 58pz850a for $5,550 on October 25 from Good Guys (Brighton) and got it delivered about two weeks later. All I can say regarding the picture quality is "wow!", it looks stunning right out of the box (mine had IFC off as default) and even Foxtel SD is handled well. BluRay is the killer of course, with Casino Royale blowing us away first up and Houghton Hears a Who mesmerising the kids.
stroltz
Two interesting bits of news today. The first is that Panasonic expect 30% reduction in flat panel TV prices "in the current business year". See Story here. The second is the free Wii promo. So if you wait you know the price will drop. But you can have one with a free Wii from tomorrow!
diesel
Panel prices have ben dropping around 30% every year for around the last 5 years, so there's no suprise there. The Wii promo looks like a good teaser, but i would have preferred a promo with one of their bluray players, though the Wii is more family friendly given it's just about Xmas
fawlty99
Will the Wii mean that a good discount on the tv itself will be harder to negotiate?
diesel
Will the Wii mean that a good discount on the tv itself will be harder to negotiate? No. The Wii is via redemption from Panasonic. It has nothing to do with the retailer, so normal haggling applies.

birdie1011503560221
Had mine delivered yesterday (Sun 14/12). Is there anything in particular that you would like to know? On my initial viewing: WOW! I've gone from a 50" LG to the 58" Panasonic and whilst there is a huge size difference, the improvement in pic quality and smoothness is awesome. I'm yet to try and calibrate my set properly, I've only just tinkered with some of the initial settings. Will get to more testing in the coming week. Guest c_y_b
Just bit the bullet and bought the 58-850A. Getting delivered on Wednesday. This is great news since no-one has these in stock. I bought the last one from Clive Peter's. Paid 5500 for the unit (plus a whole heap of other crap totalling 14K) hence probably why they were so accepting to this price. The 5 year warranty pushed this to little over 6K. Will keep you guys posted on unit, but im pretty sure it will be fanatastic. Also bought the BD35 player so it will be great to see what the picture looks like.

Got a BD30 player and bitstreamed the audio to a new Yamaha RX-V3900 AV reciever and am very pleased with the combo. A local repair shop for $NZ33 made the BD30 region free although I have yet to test it for blu-ray.
