Latest Offering From Philips?

Recommended Posts

BTW, check out the web site for new f/w updates.

Apart from the old adage of it isn't broke don't fix it, I also have had a mindset that says keep up with the updates.

Its a very simple hands off procedure.

this is what im afraid of with firmware upgrades. if there's nothing wrong with it, its best to leave with original firmware maybe its one of the reason why i had 3 sets of philips before settling with sony. you should try & find the original firmware then see if problem still occur. good luck

I've had the 7403 for a few months now, and finally had a chance to give it some 1080p24 material (via HTPC) and it handled it beautifully - I really noticed the judder when playing HDDVDs from the 360, but now things are quite smooth (not perfect, the framerate is too low for that and my eye). All the judder in panning shots of Planet Earth is virtually non-existent now.

Anyways, I was wondering, has anyone applied the latest update from the Philips website, version 000.089.000.000, dated 2008-12-10 (assuming 10th Dec)? Does anyone know what it addresses?

I'm kind of in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" frame of mind, but was just wondering...

Cheers,

athe.

I have a 47pfl7403 & was not particularly happy with the picture quality @ first. I turned off all the "enhancements" 100hz, motion plus etc & did the upgrade from the website & it's like I have a different set. With the original settings most FTA & movies looked more like video than film & the motion plus was making me seasick, but now the PQ is fantastic & I have not noticed any juddering or jaggies mentioned on other sites.

Movies look fantastic & HD tv is excellent. I wonder sometimes why companies put all these extra features in their product when to my eyes they make things worse instead of better. Since changing these settings I am a very happy customer. Also, I got the set for a very good price online & can't wait to spend some time watching some of my previously neglected movie collection. I recommend this set but be prepared to spend some time changing settings to get a decent picture.

Hi guys,

First post here...

I think I purchased the last 47" 9703 in AU today. Won't be unpacking it for another 6 months or so, I hope it won't date too much by then..

Oh and as for warranty guys I wouldn't worry too much, Philips aren't going anywhere. There service team is still on board, I know because I work for them (Philips that is but not the consumer division so please no questions about your TVs, you will more likely know more than me!).

Just my hunch... but expect to see the Philips brand back on the TV shelves in the next 12 months or so, albeit through specialist distributors selling Euro brands.

FYI they are great company to work for (I'm 1 of 160,000+ employees that work for them globally) and their culture is second to none. Their decision to pull out of sections in Consumer, in Australia was a temporary, strategic move resulting from the current economic situation. This affected about 10% of the brand in Australia, with majority of the operations in Lighting and Healthcare expanding. The Philips brand has been around since 1880 and survived both World Wars, they 're a clever bunch and their R&D leaves the competition behind.

Cheers ;)

i noticed the same issue after firmware upgrade. i downgraded back to the original firmware and the problem is less noticeable. i tried to inform philips about this issue but i dont think they really know what i was talking about.

message from philips:

Thank you for contacting Philips Consumer Care. We understand that your getting bad picture from HD channels..

The transmission is non compliant due to a bug in the firmware of the Tandberg HD encoders used by these broadcasters. The bug causes an out of range motion vector to be broadcast. There is a software fix available from Tandberg. However, you can find those fuzzy channels to different channels, try to fine tune other channels to locate those fuzzy channels.

Hi all,

after finding out that Philips was pulling out of Oz a few months back, i decided to bite the bullet and get myself and LCD TV and retire my Loewe Planus 4781. I called around to find which shops carry it but most of them had display models for the unit I wanted.

I got my 47PFL9703D (Brand new) Christmas eve from GG for $2650 with delivery. I guess it my Chrismtas present to myself.

:)

Just managed to set it up 2 weeks ago and have been happy so far with the PQ.

So far I've managed to apply some of the custom settings I've found online for the 42PFL7403D and applied it to mine and came out ok and pleasing the eye. See below:

Contrast - 58

Brightness - 55

Color - 64

Tint - 0

Sharpness - 2

Color Temp - Cool

Dynamic Contrast - Off (seems to cause some of the pixelation)

Digital Natural Motion - ON

DNR - On

Color Enhancement - On

Active Control - OFF

Picture Format - Unscaled

All is fine until last nite when I wanted to adjust the Picture settings when i noticed the Picture format was in Widescreen and the Unscaled option was greyed out and I can't even choose it.

Has anyone had this problems regarding the Picture format option for Unscaled greyed out and cannot be chosen?

Thanks in advance.

I went and had a look at mine. Greyed out as well.

But then I went to the Auto format option below in mine, Once I moved that to auto zoom, and back, I was able to use the Unscaled.

I wasn't able to get it back to greyed out.

Not sure what it all did for me, but in then I just chose what gave me most picture.

Grampus,

thanks for the suggestion from above but it didn't work for me when i tried it last nite... until i fiddled with it again & again... it seems that the Picture Format = Unscaled works only for FTA HD broadcasts otherwise, normal digital reception is what I have set it up to be. Which i found out after finally looking through the user manual..

anyhoo, am still learning the ropes arnd this TV as just been a few weeks since I've set it up. What i don't get is broadcast info, my bro-in-law's TV is a Sharp Full HD and each time he changes channels, it displays whether it is 576i, 1080i or whatever.

Does the Philips LCD TV does this? Also what i do miss from here is the PIP, which i thought it had from reading the specs but it turns out it was just for Teletext. :(

I don't get any info re bçast properties either.

Most of the time, I use a PVR and a blu ray connected via HDMI.

I get the interface characteristics, 1080, or 1080p everytime I switch interfaces.

as you have mentioned this usually happens when you're viewing SD broadcast. try it with HD broadcast and you'll be able to change from widescreen to unscaled.

I have the same problem on the philips 47pfl7403 series where it starts framing, how do you downgrade the firmware?

It seems to me its a bit hit and miss when you can/can't do it.

I was watching M*A*S*H last night, on an SD channel, via a PVR, connected via HDMI, and thought that I may have been missing something.

I paused it. Went to the picture format, and found I was able to use unscaled.

It shrunk the picture just a tad, but enough to see that I was missing some top and bottom.

I reserve my right to remain confused.

have any of you applied the latest firmware from Philips? I just checked for my 47PFL9703D earlier, and there was one for 2009 but somehow the release notes was missing for this compared to the previous one.

cheers.

Thanks Grampus, yeah, i called them before re: the unscaled question i posted here on DTV forum, same sort of reply, "I will get back to you on that" but a month later still no reply.

The previous firmware tho, dated 20.11.2008 it had release notes attached to it. I know they say firmware are updates necessary but would be nice to see what am installing and what it was for.

btw, i called Philips yesterday too and they said they will try and talk to web admin to inquire where the actual release notes were
