Blu Ray Bargains Thread

Neither Shooter or 300 at the BigW in Epping. JB in Heidelberg (Vic) had copies of 300 and were happy to price match. No Shooter though.

Think I'll try another Amazon order this week and grab Shooter, TMNT and a few others.

With the way the $$ is you are game...

Went to Big W in Karingal shopping centre, Frankston today - They had 17 different titles, but no 300 or Shooter.

Actually, first time I have been to that shopping centre in years - The new Village complex is amazing

Has anyone tried JB Preston, to see if they will price match ?

lol, i went there today as well to check out their Blu-Ray selection - first time ive been there! i was amazed to see self service check-outs, when did this start?? clearly i dont go to Big-W enough

The village complex is good, with a decent lounge section for Gold Class and Cinema Europa. Thank god for differentiated service in Cinemas these days, especially in places like Karingal!! :o

It's not that bad. Still pretty decent prices verses regular local prices such as $47.95 for Ghost Ride, $43.95 for shooter etc etc

Well, I went to Big W at Southland on Friday afternoon and they were out of 3 or 4 titles, Shooter and 300 included.

Asked about 300, and was told by the checkout lady that someone came in the day before and bought all 5 or 6 copies at once.

So expect to see a few more copies on eBay my friends!!! Either that, or JB bought a few at a reduced price!!!!

God that makes me mad!! :angry2: :angry2: :angry2:

Went back to my local BigW to pick up Shooter - had several copies previous day - but all gone. :(

Asked the kid on the AV counter whether they were getting more - he said they're having trouble obtaining BD stock. Also said some guy was in the previous day and bought over $200 worth of BD's from the sale items. It appears BigW and perhaps the distributors have underestimated demand.

Damn BigW's lack of stock - just crunched the figures on Amazon's price for Shooter and it's A$35....before shipping is added! :o

Yep Shooter is just one of those anomalies where it's actually a fair bit cheaper to buy from the BigW sale than import. Although those cases are still very few and far between at this point, not to mention the selection of titles are far greater from o/s so I will continue to procure the majority of my titles from Amazon.

I just watched Shooter on Blu-Ray

(got it from Big W QV)

Love the movie

Some of the best shoot out scenes in years

While I really loved the movie, there were parts of it that just didn't do it for me. Good, but not great.

Looked pretty though!!

I walked all the way up to Big W in QV in Melbourne on Thursday lunchtime to get 300, but was told that they 'couldn't find it'! Fortunately, I managed to leave work a little early and headed over to Altona Meadows (in the car :P) and picked it up there, along with Ghost Rider.

The $15 you saved on the DVD's was not worth the petrol or your time driving all that way.

Just to concrete some of what others have posted.

Went to JB Lonsdale, said they would price match IF Big W had the titles in stock. Which obviously they don't.

EzyDVD said they only price-match if they break even or make a profit, and apparently the Big W price is at least $10 under what they can buy them for from their suppliers. So in essence, the 'best' deal they can give you is only four or five dollars off their current price tag. Not much of a deal to me.

Went to Big W QV in the hopes of getting a rain check. They said they weren't giving any out. The guy there was nice enough, he checked up on whether they were getting any new stock of 300 in (although I really want Casino Royale more), and was told they weren't getting any more at this stage. And he told me I could bank on that being the same for all their blu-ray titles over the duration of the sale.

Apparently they weren't expecting the demand, and as the sale is nationwide, only gave each store a very limited supply of each title (say, six or so). Which is woefully inadequate.

In any case, I can't think of a way to take advantage of this deal. I live in the CBD and don't have a car, so I can't easily get to another store, and they all seem to be out of stock anyhow. So anyone who actually managed to take advantage of the deal, I count as being pretty damn lucky.

If this sale has been a success which by the sounds of it it has, then dont be surprised to see another one by Big W very soon, or another retailer for that matter.

With everyone going to the JB's of the world asking to price match BigW, I think that it will tell them something about the popularity of the Blu Ray sale.

They wont want to miss out...

I think one lesson you will learn from this type of sale is the principal of FIFS ( first in first served). You can't expect the shop to have the stock a few days after the sale has alreday begun. So when you next hear this type of sale be prepared to be the first one in the shop. I was at Epping wihtin 2.5 hours after BigW opened and even then I missed out my copy of 300 and was fortunate to grab a copy at JB Melb.

Surely that would have to make you wonder how much stock that really had in the first place though. I think BigW had no idea how popular the sale would be and, let's face it, if they had the stock 90% of the conversation about it wouldn't have been necessary since it was all about the lack of stock.

Having said that I doubt they'll make the same mistake again.

Allow me to repeat my experience one more time for those that do not seem to get it:

I went to JB in chatswood, NSW last Sat (where there's not even a BigW in the area!!), grabbed a guy and said: BigW has 2 titles I want (300 and Shooter) for 29.48, can you match it? He said, which store? I said, it's public news, it's on their latest catalouge. So, he said, I will call them up to check. He disapeared into the back, but returned only 30 seconds!!!! later, with new price stickers on those 2 discs for 29.48.

The take away from this is: it does NOT matter if you missed out on BigW, go to JB (or EzyDVD etc etc...) someone WILL be willing to match price!!!!

End of story.

Now, go and make sure all of you gets a copy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^_^

Thanks for the unnecessary lecture in which you didn't take in to account whether or not I'd heard about the deal prior to its starting, however ajm's point is really the key one - they didn't have enough stock to meet demand, and considering it is a TWO WEEK sale, you'd THINK they would have enough stock so that customers wouldn't HAVE to get there at the very start of the sale on the very first day to take advantage of it. You cannot blame the consumer for a corporation's screw-up.

Hi Guys,

If there's anyone in Sydney, I've just been to Big W Macquarie Park and they seemed to have a good selection in stock. I bought Shooter and Hellboy.

I didn't any copies of 300.

Did I blame you for BigW's stock level screw up ? I don't think so. If Big W can screw up their stock level with this sale there is no guarantee they won't screw up their next sale. You will probably get screw by them again if you get in 4 days after the sales started in their next sale.

I missed out at Big W at QV so tried the following stores:

Target (refused to match)

Myer (refused to match)

HMV (refused to match)

David Jones (matched, but had bugger-all titles)

Jb-Hi Fi (refused to match)

I only managed to get my hands on 300 and Shooter in the 5 or 6 hour window that JB seemed to have them ALL reduced to $29 (thanks to a certain member of this forum alerting us!)

Perhaps I just took your excessive use of 'you' to mean me personally, instead of 'you' as in the general public. As in, it's MY fault for not getting there early enough to take advantage of their sale. Which is, I'm sure you'll agree, a little ridiculous.

But you're right - there's been stock screw-ups before and there will be again. Even the guy behind the counter said to me on Sunday "It's a two week sale, we'll get more in," and then the very next day said "We won't be getting anything else at all." They were completely unprepared for the demand.

Fair enough .... to a point.

But when you take out a full page ad, and then cannot even meet demand on the first day of a 7 day sale then that is pretty poor.

Salt in the wound is that they refuse to raincheck.

And the fact that the two most popular titles appear to have not even been stocked at all in some stores then it reeks of bait and switch.

Hey guys,

Just to give you a heads up, I took the Big W catalogue into my local JB HiFi and they priced matched all the titles in it no questions asked. I bought different titles on two different days (different sales people too) and one day was real busy and the other not.

Even gave me a title that was not in the catalogue for the same price (superman returns was $30.95)

Cheers

Steve

They seem to be matching much more readily in Sydney than they are here in Melbourne.

I was shown the email JB stores received from their head office regarding the Big W sale, and it stated official policy was to price match *only* if it can be confirmed that the nearest Big W store had the title in stock at the advertised price.

Some stores are adhering to this, some are just matching and yet others still are plain refusing. Seems to be pot luck. But pushing the issue would most likely result in following official guidelines which means confirmation of stock and we all know how that would end.

Sorry to burst your (rather direct) bubble but did you read the comments being made? Many of these stores wouldn't price match at all, including the two EzyDVD stores I went to, and many would only price match if you could show that the local BIgW had stock - which many didn't. At least this was my experience.

I think people "got" the advice they just couldn't necessarily "get" the product by following it.

Went to buy Hellboy, saw EzyDVD Warrawang have their new Blu-ray/HD-DVD section, and even with signs out the front of the store promoting the new formats (about time this happened).. they had heaps of titles (even new ones like Mr Bean's Holdiay), but were all $39.95.

I told them about Big W deal, guy actually had a Big W catalogue right on the table, he said Big W sold out the day they were released. I asked if he would price match and he said he would go down to $31, so t'was a done deal ;)

Dropped into my local BigW today - Bendigo - they had some more copies of 300 on the shelf. Other titles also topped up - but no Shooter (damn). Extra stock must have trickled thru.

Same here in Newcastle..I noticed today they have a lot more BD titles in ...I also noticed a few copies of 300

although Target have increased the rrp of HD-DVD and BD titles again

Actually it was first time i've seen HD-DVD titles at Target although they only had 2 .. Happy Feet and something else..
