New Panasonic 8 Series Plasmas - Cheaper?!?!

Recommended Posts

Hi, yes I was tossing up the 46X. I ended up buying a 50PX80A plus a DP-P1 for cheaper than I could get the X even after cash back.

Nice duo you picked up there twitch. Similar to my setup....you won't be disappointed

..i'm in the market for a 50" plasma, and thinking of the Panasonic 50PX80A or Pioneer 508XDA ...just concerned the rush of people who want to upgrade their TV for the olympic...and what it does to prices and stock availability.

Well you'll be disappointed as the Pioneer 508XDA has already sold out and there are no more shipments

I think at this point, I need to physically take a PS3 / 360 to a store and plug it in.

I'll be damned if I know which store will allow me to do this though, any suggestions in Melbourne?

Hi scotty,

My recommendation would be a more specialist hi-fi store. clef hi-fi on clarendon st, south melbourne, are super helpful and pretty much let you do whatever you want with their gear. Unfortunately they dont stock panasonic (but they do have samsung and pio in plasma, and sharp and something else(?) in lcd). I'm sure other similar stores (Carlton audio visual, Klapp, etc) would be of similar assistance. Not sure what they're like on pricing, when i was buying speakers/amp from clef they offered me a reasonable price on the sammy 50'' 1080 ($3k a few months ago).

Very keen to hear the findings of your research as looking at 50'' new gen pana (1080).

I had a look at the Pana's in 3 different shops today to see if i could "see the ants".I have to say that i never found any LMAO. HN had a 50" with "Open Season" playing through hdmi and it was rock solid.JB had "Spidey 3" on the 50" and all i could see up close is a light dusting of grain, the 42" had the fta HD demo loop from the in built tuner and it looked about as good as i've ever seen fta on a flat panel display.Myer had two 42" screens side by side with a HD demo, one hooked up by compersite looked suitably awful with combing all over the place and the other by hdmi razor sharp and rock solid. The closest i came to seeing ants was on a Sony lcd in DSE that looked like it was setup wrong.I don't think people who hook up decent gear through the hdmi are going to have any problems with the Pana's myself.

"....price of plasmas is going to be tumbling down soon"...can you elaborate on this? Is this an industry thing or is it end of financial year sales / pre olympic sales etc....

Well the new models are still coming out and apparently they are cheaper to make but for some reason they're still priced quite high, so I think they will become cheaper after the honeymoon period is over. Also the dollar is strong and we are paying nearly double what we should be paying. Panasonic have recently dropped their RRP prices so the other manufacturers will have to follow suit if they want to keep up.

Had a long hard look at the LG 42PG60UD vs Panasonic 42PX80. The PX80 has a sharper more contrasty image, but the colours of the LG were much nicer to me. Overall the LG looked a lot smoother and natural, espeically with skin tones and SD.

That said, if you dont find the Panasonics too harsh, you may just prefer their eye-popping good looks.

scottylans have you checked out the LG 50PG60UD? It looked really good to me. Nice warm, smooth looking image. I am getting the 42" version of it. Myer have it ticketed at under 2k, but you could probably haggle it.

I'll feel like a real bastard walking into a store with a PS3, 360 with no intention of paying their 'small, nice and polite' store prices :(

You can do it in Myer. I had taken my DVDs and checked them all out before making the purchase.

pneu,

The 42" LG PG20D was ticketed at $1199 in Betta Electrical Sydney and it is very similar to the 60UD (except for USB and a slight difference in contrast ratio). Use this price as a guide to see how much more for the 60UD. I'd say a premium of around $300 is more than enough.

I dont want the 20D as it has inferior video processing and I have learnt my lesson after buying a low spec Pana.

Was offered a 60UD for $1250 and I am taking it. Only problem is I gotta wait 2 weeks for it :(

Maybe I'll try Myer CBD another day, I need to spend hours there though with a 360, PS3 and some time.

I'd want to see the little map down the bottom right in GTA4

Some kind of dark scene in a game.

Perhaps see XBMC playing back some 350mb divx just to see how bad it can be.

Considering the 42" plasmas looked a lot better than the 50's - I wonder if it's just 'huge tv's are hard to look nice' ? - maybe it's a power thing, who knows but the picture blew on most of the 50" plasmas (by my standards)

The secret is not to stand too close to the 50" TV, especially if it only has 1366X768 pixels. The pixel size is quite large on the 50" models and the closer you get, the worse it gets. The nearest you can get is around 1.5 metres before feeling like the picture quality is crap. The 360/PS3 have wireless controllers so make use of them and get some distance between the TV and your eyes.

pneu,

The 42" 60UD for $1250 is a good deal, even if you have to wait 2 weeks for it. Congratulations !

This is not due to pixel size - the shimmer is something else - it does it on 1080p and 768 displays from all different ranges.

Im finding it much better to sit back from my plasma, making 1080p a bit of a waste in mos cases.

The gaming motion trails on my pana are settling down for sure ... still getting motion sickness though ... Im thinking its a big sharp fast image with no blur thats doing it, which is hardly the tvs fault!

Thanks. I have to say your posts on the forum regarding TV prices, haggling, and avoidance of no-name brands have rang true in my case.

If the LG turns out to be unsatisfactory I will probably have to settle for a 42PX80 as I don't see any other options in that screen size/price bracket.

I noticed a slight shimmer last night, it happened in the dark red background on "Q&A" on ABC1, although I was watching it through a PVR. I could see it if sitting <~2.5m. That's the only scene I've noticed it in (but it didn't bother me really); it must be something to do with a dark still background?? Maybe red is significant?? Maybe my PVR was doing it (I neglected to check that out)??

I wonder if a setting might fix it, my set is on default "home" mode with just brightness and contrast turned down a touch.

I would rather 'settle' for a Panasonic than have any LG TV any day of the week, but that's just me.

You'll not be dissapointed with the PX80A. I have the 50" and it's really good.

I think this settles once and for all the ever growing argument of which plasma is better, the Pana or the Pio.

http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/plasma/0,239035...39289358,00.htm

If you're waiting patiently for Pioneer's ninth-generation plasmas, you'll have to wait a little longer — they're not due until Q4 2008. The company will only be making a 50-inch and 60-inch model, and though specifications are yet to be announced we expect features like 100Hz, 1080p, and even higher contrast levels to be included.

These plasmas will be the last inhouse models now that Pioneer has signed on Panasonic to manufacture panels for them. However, we won't see the TVs from this partnership for another 18 months yet.

So as you see, they are all going to be Pana in the future.

Wise move Pio. I own a Pana for the last 2 years and there is no better plasma on the market.

42" HD model.

I will be buying this year in october the new 58" FullHD model.

42" is way too small for me now. 50" would not do it either.

The 42PZ800 and 46PZ800 should be showing up in stores now as they are now shipping so keep eyes open.

I am the last person to ever buy an LG product but the whole thing driving my purchase of one is the colours, I find some of the Panasonics have off colours (orange/brown skin tones and brown greys) which I cannot tolerate at all. But that's just me. The Panasonics seem to have more phosphor trail as well which I am sensitive to, but I won't truly know how the LG stacks up until I get it. For all I know it could be a piece of shyte. What I do know is that the reviews of it are good (http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/LG-42PG6000/) and it looked good in store alongside the Panasonic.

This sounds like PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) noise. This occurs on all plasma screens and is a byproduct of the electrical charging of the cells on the plasma screen.

It causes a shimmering pixel effect that is noticeable if you sit close to your TV. Sit further back and most people don't notice it at all.

I usually only notice it on some large HD panels. I guess you might be sensitive to it.

Maybe they've turned things around a little, judging by that review; and i personally value reviews from hdtvtest so fair play to them.

It will take quite a bit to change people's perception of a brand not renowned for the picture quality i suppose.

Perhaps we shouldn't be so judgemental eh?

Saw this in another thread but thought it need to be here-

Just ordered 50 inch PZ700A for $2650, delivery included, from The Goodguys Nunawading.

HN, JB, and DSE are unable to match the price at all. DSE does not have it in stock except for the demo one, however the sales guy in DSE told me they have 19 new Panasonic model, probably 800A arriving on 27 this month, and RRP will be 3999. He had already got a group buy from their store which ordered 14 of them at the price of 3398 so he offered me the price for per-ordering. However I am just not sure that the improvements of new model over 700A can justify the extra $700.

I saw about 7 of them laying around in goodguys. One of them will be mine tomorrow. Can't wait ...

Hmm, the Panasonic TH-50PX80A 50" 768p is looking good for possibly under $2000 now/soon.

Now you're exactly what I've been looking for - it sounds to me like you know your stuff - and the description sounds about right.

I'm sensitive to any image which would suck as a gamer and that stuff sucks if you're a gamer.

Just went to DSE Powerhouse and purchased TH-50PX80A for $1,869 including delivery and installation and a Monster RF cable.

Was going to pay cash but was also offered 12months interest free with deferred payment deal.

Don't think I would get a better deal elsewhere. Harvey Norman refused to match the price on the tv let alone throw in free delivery & installation.

Due to be delivered on Tuesday. can't wait! I'll post my impressions. Should be great coming from rubbish 4 year old SD LG Plasma.
