Sharp Aquos D83 Series

Recommended Posts

Picked up 52" last saturday and been giving it a bit of a workout since.

...Issue I do have is smudges around edge of screen (principally along top and bottom). These are most noticeable on panning scenes (eg camera running sideways across football field/cricket pitch or sky scenes). Basically large cloud like smudges that don't move...

That sounds worryingly like the 'backlight bleed-thru' issue (also known as 'clouding') that LCD sets can suffer from -and which bedevilled many Samsung and Sony sets produced last year.

Hope it's not, but...

Suggest you do a forum search on clouding to learn more about this. If you confirm that this is indeed the problem, then best to get it sorted quickly -maybe by getting an exchange set.

Good Luck

BD deck is a freebie with (I think) all the 83 series panels. Certainly is with the 52". Deal started Monday 14 January and I think runs for a month (may only be to end of Jan).

cheers

Blairy

I rang Sharp and it's only with Clive Peters and some Harvey N are doing it.

Congo,

This didn't include the BD player. You shouldn't need any receipts. HN Knox has the sticker price @ $2772 which is very good anyway.

hi Monty

i live in Adelaide D.J. said they would match if i show them a genuine receipt

thanks

Bob

Speaking to CP and HN, they both advised that the BD is not a manufacturer freebie (like the PS3 with Sony). This means that both retailers have to buy the BD players (at a significantly reduce rate). Example: If the player is normally bought for $400 Sharp will sell it to the retailer for $200.

What this means to us (again this is only my interpretation of what the reps told me) is that we can haggle on the TV alone or pay slightly more and get the BD player (at a lot less than the normal street price).

As for the $4800 my bro paid, that was without the BD player. I have also been quoted that price in Vic (he is in Sydney and will ask hime to scan receipt).

anyone have any issues with digital noise on 52d83?

Ok, went into cp today and had them display the LC-52D83X and unfortunately it didnt blow me away....blacks were good, color great, picture sharp but yes, I found the same, couldnt look past the noise issue (sharpness set about 60%) and also showed a slight judder on the moving earth/moon scenes that was via bluray from the movie fantastic four ROTSS.

Am I being a bit picky? I compared it to a bravia xd 46" (didnt have the 52") and the sony had much less noise.....wouldve liked to compare both 52" side by side.

What blu-ray player were they using? Was it outputting 1080p/24?

While dead pixels are one possible fault on an LCD panel, there are other issues that can affect LCD panels also.

For example, the issue described earlier in this thread by blairy sounds a bit like the problem known as ‘clouding’ which has affected other brands of LCD including Samsung & Sony recently. Are you guys checking for this condition on the Sharp sets that you have purchased –or are considering purchasing?

(When this clouding issue occurs, it is caused by the liquid crystals not cutting-off the light from the display’s backlight in an even manner thereby leaving blotches of lighter areas on the screen. Naturally, these blotches can affect the evenness of the picture being displayed -especially in dark scenes).

Note that the dead pixel test won’t reveal this condition, but all you need is for the set to be turned-on and showing a blank screen.

A severe example of clouding occurring on a forum member’s Samsung can be seen here:

(While blairy’s earlier post is here):

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...st&p=917137

Here’s hoping that the Sharp sets are not suffering from this problem. This post is just a heads-up and a suggestion that you might like to check for it.

Regards

i tried those software on all of my 5 panels, that software does not do anything at all boys..

even massaging the pixel, does jack all...

if youhave dead pixels i recommend swappng the tv over its the only fix..

noone answer my question, has anyone had dead pixels on the 46" 83 series???

moreover, out of all 5 sets of tvs i have not had any banding issues or clouding issues just dead fricken pixels!!

is that with the BD player Sheiny?

no mate, but like everyone has mentioned before, i expect blu ray players to plummet in prices and shrink in size over the next 6-12months so its of no great disadvantage to me

I found one dead red pixel and i called HN Knox and they said "no problem we will order in another set for you" as they are sold out of 42 and 46 inch panels.

They said i could pick another brand tv but I am happy with the sharp.

My wife thinks I am mad swapping it over as she did not even notice it until I showed her.

It is the 46d83x with the dead pixel and they have ordered a new one but I was surprised they said they would swap it as I would guess most panels would have a dead pixel wouldn't they?

Hi Goldy, from reading a lot of youre posts i feel i am searching for the same quality at a reasonable price as you were. From youre earlier post you were leaning towards the philips tv's but opted to go for the sharp. I have seen the philips and was very impressed with its clarity and am thinking of going one up with the 42PFL9900D model. I have also read a lot of reviews of the sharp models and some have reffered them as the best lcd tv panels out there. Personally i havent seen the sharp models yet but the feed back i am getting from this forum is the quality control may be not up to standard. So just out of curiosity why did you opt for the sharp instead of the philips?.

Hi Mosquito,

I did a s--t load of research and looking at forums and it just makes you more confused then ever.

I started looking at plasmas but there is not alot of choices in the plasma tv's and the only ones i liked were the pio and fuji but were a bit pricey and while the pio was good it didn't exactly blow me away every time i saw it and the 50" was too big and the 42 a bit small so then i started looking at 46" LCD's and i was looking at sony x series and philips 47".

The sony looked sharp but with movement i could see it did struggle a bit and i did like the philips very much and the free tv was very tempting i must say.

Then I went to a specialist audio/hi fi place and i was chatting to the guy and he said I should look at the new sharp 83 series even though his shop does not sell them but he said they are trying to get sharp to allow them to sell them.

I had never even considered sharp and i could not find any reviews on the 83 as they are a fairly new model but i found a review on c.net.com.au and they reviewed the previous model for some strange reason but they said it was the best lcd on the market.

So i finally found them at a few harvey normans and a clive peters near me and the first thing i noticed was how natural the picture looked and how well it handled motion.

I have been watching cricket and tennis and they both look fantastic.

The sharp has all the latest features that the others do such as 4ms refresh,100-120hz,noise reduction, motion handling ,3 hdmi and 2 component which the philips only has 1 component and i need 2.

The panel comes out of there new plant in japan and they supply panels to loewe who make a high end lcd for about 10,000 so i guess if the panels were crap they would not use them.

Most companies share panels now-sony/samsung. LG and philps.

3 year warranty is good to.

Also in my opinion it is a good looking panel which is very slim and has thin edges.

I mounted it on the wall and connected it to my bose 321 and i am very happy with it.

Even some of the foxtel channels look good(some not so good though).

Standard def on tv looks excellent and hd10,hd9 look sensational.

I watched million dollar baby last night on HD9 and it looked really good.

At the end of the day if you choose the philips or the sharp you will be happy i think.

I have found 1 dead red pixel on mine and i rang HN Knox and I didn't expect anything but they said no problem we will order in another one and swap it over or they said i could swap it for another brand but i will stick with the sharp.

My wife thinks i am mad for swapping it as you cant even notice the pixel unless you are pretty close and there is a light background but because i know where it is on the screen i know it will s--t me every time i look at the tv and i will be trying to see if i can see it.

The price i got it for was very good to and that was a bit of a factor to as i got it for 3160.00 and the next best price i could get was 3500.00 and the philips was around the 3500.00 mark to.

But all of this is just my opinion and i bet many will disagree anyway so the best thing to do is just look at them and let your eyes be the judge.

Hope this helps you a bit.

p.s are you in melb?

Just thought Id post my buy of the 42" D83.

I am quite happy with the TV, even though I have only seen Foxtel as I have no antenna ATM :angry2:

I bought it from HN Auburn for $2550. Considering I was quoted $3450 at JB Parramatta I thought it was a pretty good buy.

I am also wondering what ppls settings are using?

cheers

One of the biggest problems with Sharp LCDs is banding. atm the jury is out on whether the new Sharp models like the D83X that come from Sharp's new plant also suffer from banding.

I can tell you that my 2yr old 37" Sharp LCD all of a sudden and without warning started to show a 1cm wide dark vertical band on the left hand side of the screen. I have yet to ring Sharp as I don't know whether I should get it fixed (meaning Sharp might want to take the TV away for repair and I'll have no TV for however long it takes to fix the panel).

Track Side,

Awesome price, even better than the previous best for 42" of $2700 or so at HN Knox. Any inclusions - delivery, HDMI, extended warranty? Could I please request you forward the receipt to amonahan "at" iprimus.com.au. If you can, that would be very much appreciated!
