32 Inch Plasma

Recommended Posts

So, has anyone seen one of the NEC's in the flesh? I'm super interested in one for the bedroom, and would love to hear opinions on the PQ. Viewing from around 3.5 metres away, I'd say this panel would be perfect for my needs.

Strayan, checkout Betta Electrical's catalogue online at lasoo.com.au for a pic of the NEC.

I saw the Soniq 32" Plasma with the Built in HD Turner and I must say it was a nice looking unit. The PQ wasn't bad either

Hello to all!

Sorry my terrible english (saint Google help me).

I found this forum searching about LG Plasma 32".

My intentions are to play Wii, some DVDs,downloaded videos, and open TV (maybe cable TV). I live in Brasil and only now HDTV is coming... and very... veeeery slowly!

An user on another forum justify your buy saying "this Tv are 1:1 resolution with Wii" and isnt necessary any adaptation of resolutions. The screen looks clean and no cracks edge. It is true this relation and your benefits?

Today i am with an CRT 29" mega-hyper-trash and small space (15m2). Gain some space to play Wii isnt an bad idea...

Burn In prevention: orbit/invertion/white screen

Complete Descrition (portuguese)

Comparing prices.

One LCD 32" Samsung R71BX cost R$2,399,00 = $1.296,00

One PLASMA 32" LG cost R$1.999,00 = $1.080,00

I think that TV is the best choice for my profile.

I don't need Full HDTV and HDTV... not on this moment. Maybe 3 or 5 years...

Looked at one of these in BigW the other day. The colours were much better than the 32" AWA LCD next to it ($100 more), but the black level was pretty bad. Didn't play with it so it may have just been how it was set up

Just purchased one of these.

It is an AWA, bigW dont extend the warranty (they didnt even know where they had stored them, much less what the warranty was!) but there is a form in the package for purchasing an AWA extended warranty.

For an extra 2 year warranty, they charge $220, so probably not worth it for the cost of the TV.

big w has a 32 ich awa plasma in next thursdays catalouge for $698 , does this mean that other manufacturers might follow? i would really love to have a plasma in the lounge room, but need about this size as i am not willing to get rid of my entertainment unit. i suppose it would be asking to much for one with a HD tuner?

I had a look at one of these in Big W yesterday. I thought it would be perfect for me because I hate the poor colour reproduction of LCD screens (yes, even the latest generation ones!) and the slow response times of LCD TV's. (How come so many TV manufacturers make LCD monitors with 2ms response times, but they make their TV's with 8ms response times? I don't get it! I know there are different LCD technologies, but these companies are making some brilliant - and huge! - LCD monitors that rival or surpass their TV's. Why can't they just add a digital tuner and a remote to their monitors?) I'd love to have a plasma in my bedroom, but a 42" screen is too big. When I saw this AWA for $598 in Big W, I thought my dreams had been answered: an inexpensive, mid-sized plasma!

Unfortunately, there were two things that turned me off this TV:

1. No digital tuner. What's the point in having a widescreen plasma that only has an analogue tuner in it? The analogue stations only broadcast a 4:3 picture, and you get ghosting, snow, (etc). Also, analogue transmissions are set to be switched off in the not-too-distant future. (Certainly within the lifespan of modern plasmas!)

2. The glare on the screen was atrocious! I could barely see what was being shown on-screen because everything that transmitted/reflected even the slightest amount of light was reflected by the screen! I reckon you'd have to be in a perfectly dark room before the glare would cease to be a problem. It's the worst I've seen on any TV! It doesn't matter how good the picture quality of the screen is if you can't see it through the glare!

When I looked at it at BigW, it looked like absolute turd. The shoplights cause terrible glare, and the picture looked like it had a layer of sandpaper over it.

Once I put it up at home, I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. No glare even with all lights on, great picture.

The only negatives I think are the rubbish quality remote (will hook it up with my harmony anyway) and the flimsy base. For $598, I have no complaints at all.

i had a look at the awa today, it really does have a pretty good picture, and it's not an ugly unit

at the moment though we have five tv's (four of which are analog ) between four people so i can't really justify buying one.

that may change when they start making smaller HD plasma tv's :)

Mate, it is $598.

Yeah, it's $598 now, but it's normal price is $699. At its original price, it isn't that much cheaper than the street price of some similar quality high-def LCD's or 42" plasmas being sold around the place. I'm not saying AWA should have included a twin HD tuner into the TV. I mean, it's only a SD TV. But when you can pick up a SD set-top box for under $50 retail (you can even buy a top quality Strong SD STB for under $70), why wouldn't you include a SD digital tuner in a widescreen plasma TV? Their cost price to add the digital tuner would definitely be nowhere near $50, and the cost would be reduced a bit by not having to put in an analogue tuner.

Some might say just buy the TV and get one of those $50 set-top boxes. But who wants a separate STB these days? It means you end up having another bloody remote (I've got waaaaay too many already!), you need another power point, you have cables running all over the place, and you use one more input on the TV!

No thanks!

Unfortunately there is still a need for the analogue tuner to satisfy customers that don't get digital reception which would mean two tuners if a digital tuner was also included, at this level it's all about price so you end up with the cheaper solution

Problem is, you can't bargain with Big W. I just grabbed one of the Soniq from JB and got it below that price. Not much mind you but it's $10 bucks in my pocket. And given the quality of these things isn't known I grabbed the extended warranty for 5 years to give me some piece of mind. Now to hook my old masterpiece up in the bedroom - you bewdy.

Oh, and I'm also keen on others thoughts on HD vs SD at this size... in my opinion the SD would be more than adequate unless you're sitting less than a metre from the screen.

is the tevion plasma from aldi a good buy? or is it just rubbish. I have a budget of around 1200 for a new tv. Having 4 kids i dont have much spare cash for things like this so a new tv would be a big purchase for me. Just wondering if this one is any good.

Anyone got any feedback on the Tevion 32" plasma from Aldi $569? It uses a LG panel, is that good? It says it has an analogue tuner but has the DVB and Dolby Digital symbols in the ad so does this mean it has at least a SD digital tuner? Do Aldi do extended warranty? At least they offer a 12 month in home warranty.

Hi mugwump,

With your budget you can get the following,

Pana 42" (VIERA TH-42PX7A 42" (106cm) HD Digital Plasma TV).

http://panasonic.com.au/products/details.cfm?objectID=3988

Samsung

http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/detail/...=PS42C91HDX/XSA

They have been going for $1350 of late and by the end of the fiancial year could well be in your price range.

Cheers

Aldi Tevion gear is usually good quality and has an ironclad return policy. In the case of the current plasma, I would personally give it a go. LG have been in the forefront of developing a smaller plasma screen which has only been possible recently due to the development of smaller plasma pixels. (previously plasma pixels were bigger and it wasn't economic to produce a plasma screen smaller than 42 inches. However the new plasma full HD panels absolutely depended on the development of smaller pixels, and this has opened a 'window' of opportunity to make cheap smaller SD panels now that this technology is available)

The downside of the current offering is that it only comes with an analogue tuner, which gives the snowy, flickering stretched out distorted picture you often see on the plasmas in pubs and clubs, so a STB is needed to watch better quality digital TV. Because 10, 7 and shortly 9 are broadcasting extra HD channels you would need to get an HD box which would add about $100 to the purchase.

With a native resolution of only 850*480 the TV will only display SD picture but if attached to a HD box you can still watch the new channels but they will not be rendered by the TV as a HD picture and should look the same as the existing digital channels.

All in all, a good Cathode Ray tube replacement for the bedroom or if your old Rank Arena is dying :P:P - and wide screen. And pricewise beats the crapper out of similarly sized LCD screens, albeit that the LCDs have higher native definition. If you can go twice the price however, as Struggo suggests, go for a HD 42 inch - would be better as your main TV for sure.

Cheers
