New Samsung F81 Series

Recommended Posts

I just geeked out and went into the service menu's!!!!!

Its a frightening experience, and apparently can be quite dangerous.

I didn't change anything just had a bit of a look.

Here is more detailed info re software :-

T-PENYDAU0-1006

T-PEONYAAU5-1002

107.1.100.15

T-PEONY-AU-0001

2007-10-16

DTP-LO-0098

Don't know what any of it means, but we can deduce that the software we have is specific to Australia.

I'm guessing some of it relates to the Plug&Play setup screens which KNOW we are in Australia <g>

So far i've only heard of SS02 panels here in Australia.

Over in UK they've got SS04 as the latest.. so please let us know if anyone gets anything newer

than SS02. Don't know what this means either.. just identifying facts and trying to compare.

My 46F has

T-PENYDAU0-1006

2007-10-16

SS02

....and there is wave too

I think we should keep on ringing Samsung to push them to find a fix......... :angry2:

Regarding the wave - I think the best outcome for us would be for Myer to register our wish to return/swap the product once Batch #2 has come in. Albeit this will probably be in a couple of weeks time.

It would be good if Samsung actually acknowledged there is an issue and what they are doing to rectify it... For all we know Batch #2 will be the same, which would be a waste of everyones time.

Also do you guys hear the set "creaking" - particularly noticeable when just turning the TV off?

Cheers

D.

According to Samsung there are NO known faults with the F81 series. The reports of this "wave" issue are minimal in terms of number of units sold. Not every F81 has the wave issue and as it is less than 1% of the units this is not considered a serious problem.

With any thing purchased there is the possibility for getting one with a problem, in the case of this forum as we tend to discuss things and have products in common it appears as though the problems could be larger than they are.

As there are many units out there that don't have the wave issue Samsung have advised me that the next shipment will be ok as 99% of this shipment was.

I tend to agree with what they are saying, I still think the LCD is great and as I have mentioed before as I watch on Dynamic I cannot see the wave. When I change to Standard or Movie mode I can start to see it.

I will reserve my judgement until the replacement arrives and hope that there is no issue, in the meantime I will keep enjoying my new LCD.

yup - its definitely a great set but I think their numbers are wrong.

There are at least 5 guys on this forum with the problem, how many sets do you think they sold in batch #1? I doubt if its more than 70-80.

I would say %20-%30 of B1 have the wave problem. If not more.

If Samsung continue to push the "no problem" line what can we do except return it?

Well I was considering getting the 46" unit, UNTIL reading this thread!!

What is the point of buying a 100Hz unit and not using it's 100Hz setting?

This is a shame as the bonus smaller LCD was a great attraction.

Oh well. Maybe a Sony X or a plasma.

Good luck to you guys and I hope Samsung gets this wave issue sorted quickly.

Yeah, I was planning on getting the 46" F8 this week, but now...

The thread started off on a positive note. I should have stopped reading halfway through.

The thing is, my current Samsung LCD has proven to be very reliable, so I'm not entirely keen on moving to a new brand (Sony X series).

The fact that it's a 100Hz unit, has an incredible dynamic contrast ratio and comes with a free LCD is too hard to resist.

I'm still considering 'taking the plunge' just after xmas. Despite the absence of guarantees from the second batch, I'm might just take that risk.

Anybody else feel the same way?

I know just Myer in Victoria at their Altona Warehouse started with about 30 of the 46" and don't forget the 40" as well is to be included, so I think the first batch would have been in the hundreds and 5 or so returns don't ring the alarm bells just yet...Believe I am frustrated as this was my first venture into LCD but I am remaining optomistic and calm at his stage...

Just to add to that above post, I spoke to a Samsung tech today. He seemed fairly genuine and spoke openly about this matter, but clearly within guidelines permitted by his job..

Essentially he said that there is an issue BUT as posted above it appears to be around 1-2% of the series. Samsung are looking into it and at this stage are saying that (a) it was a bad batch that was processed or (B) there may be a question of interference from another source.

When pressed his thoughts were that it was (a), as (B) is very rare nowadays with electronics and interference.

From my research with LCD monitors this issue has been known to happen. For example, in a manufacturing process where the factory spits out say 2000 of the LCD's a day, between 10am-11am there is a fault with the process, and some 200 LCD's get spat out with questionable results. What causes the manufacturing fault could be anything. Worse, this can happen anywhere along the chain e.g. in the production of the panel, part of anyone of the electronic components etc. This is why when the matter is looked into, it takes time to find where the fault originated.

I indicated Samsung have basic QA as say compared to Sony. He of course did npt agree per se, but did state Sony's system of production is probably more advanced than Samsungs. He got a tad touchy at this point and said Sony use the Samsung panels, and is off the opinion it is a component in the LCD.

I then raised if it had to do with the 100hz technology being so new - again he did not comment directly but suggested that it could be.

It is possible that this is the aspect posing problems with the TV. Sony kind of have the same issue, but it is not as apparent as the Samsung, so it could well be the electronics used to achieve the result are better with Sony than Samsung.

Well I just reported it to Samsung (1300 362 603) - the tech I spoke to hadn't heard about the problem.

I told him about this website and the other users that are affected.

He said he would raise it with his Team leader so at least the right people get told about it.

He basically said utilise the 14day return policy from the retailer.

I agree with you, Samsung starts downplaying the problem to avoid massive returns on their faulty product therefore would create a bad image.

Well in my book they already are anyway, from previous experiences. Just a matter of time before something else comes along. Let's see how well they'll handle this situation.

Mine is going from bad to worse, occasionally apart from the annoying coloured lines flickering across the screen constantly it goes into a almost solarized effect like on on cameras.

FIRST LARGE PANEL EXPERIENCE "PRICELESS"

Type: PY46SO

Made in Malaysia

Version: SS02

Can someone post a video of this wave problem. I want to know what to look for.

It is so faint and on my F81 it only is visible when I select Standard or Movie mode but even on these it is not always there. I definately cannot see it on Dynamic Mode. I would think this would be very hard to capture on Video.

On mine it is like a faint shadow that starts at the top of the screen and runs down to the bottom scrolling over and over again. But as I said it is not always visible and I have not seen it at all on Dynamic Mode.

If you already have the panel, aren't you better off not knowing. Once you see it, you will always see it. If it's that big of a problem you would have seen it already (assuming you own one of these panels).

Switch off the lights in the room, select movie mode, hit the channel list button, you can easily see the wave, the faint vertical bars moving down the panel. Once you know what it is, exit from the channel listing mode, you should then know what to look for. It is very clear in low moving scenes like news reader etc. It is very annoying.

Why dont people get it replaced with the 14 day policy?

I would do that and see what the 2nd set is like before making such a big song and dance about it.

I have had a great run with samsung products, so this does seem strange to me.

Hi Automan,

Quote: Why dont people get it replaced with the 14 day policy?

Well I have done that. I'll try my luck with the replacement which should arrive somewhere around the 17th. I must admit that appart from the wave issue, I love the TV. It looks great, sound is good, HD sources look fantastic ... I just want one that can do that with a stable consistent backlight. Not too much to ask I think.

ok... so "Firmware is a combination of software and hardware. Computer chips that have data or programs recorded on them are firmware."

When you guys refer to "firmware fixes", how does this work?

Would Samsung actually send you (or even come out and install), a small piece of hardware on the actual unit itself?

I've purchased the t.v too (being delivered 1st week of Jan), and just want to know what the options are of batch 2 has the same problems.

Thanks heaps.

Steve.

Steve, firmware is really just software that's stored in ROM (read-only memory) on a computer chip inside the TV. It's typically executed once you turn the TV on.

Think of it like BIOS in a computer. When you need to upgrade your BIOS, it's only a matter of installing a piece of software (i.e.: no additional hardware involved).

I'm not sure if there are any firmware upgrades for this TV as yet.

You have 14 days to decide whether you want to keep the TV I guess, for me and those who already received the TV, I think it would be to late for a refund.

Some seem not to fuss about the problem, it likes watching the PC monitor through the cam corder, the scanning just not that bad, but still, I cant tolerate it. I have booked the replacement, I need to make the decision in the next 7 days or so, whether I should go for the refund or take the gamble with the replacement and hope Samsung will have the problem fixed! $3k+ is not small.

What happens if you get the replacement and the problem still exists?

Do you call Samsung and get them to replace it again (via the original retailer)?

Do you get another 14 days with the new set?

If after the 14 days you are still not happy, what is the most and least that Samsung might do?

Would they try to fix it, replace it or give you your money back?

After all these sets do come with 3 year warranty.. and i WOULD consider this a fault.

I am guessing, after the 14 days, faults are repaired under warranty but I am waiting for a response from Myer on this same question, I will update here when I have hear from them, unless someone else knows.

Hi guys,

Just to let you know I also have the wave problem. (Only noticable when turning off dynamic and lowing backlight.

To update you on my posts of last week . My 46" F8 got from Myer at Indooroopilly was turning itself off after 5 to 120 seconds and then turning itself on again. Assume was a power supply problem. I was very lucky that the guy at Myer let me have their brand new demo model in exchange that had just arrived. Unfortunately it has the wave problem like many others here. Unsure what I will do yet as very happy with the TV

Based on this thread, I was going to get one of these, but now, I'm going to pass completely on this model. Clearly there are too many issues and too much BS around this model. Especially with a unit of this size, it's not trivial to throw it in the back of a car and take it back to the place of purchase...

I'll likely still buy a Samsung. All of my PC monitors are Samsung, but not this model. Or even F series.

When I spoke with Samsung Technical Support I asked them about this and I was told if the new set was delivered and was faulty it would also have 14 days to exchange as this was considered a new set...I hope he is right. I also hope they continue to read this forum as it was indicated to me that they do, as the numbers of wave issues continue to grow, so hopefully they will decide to take action and look for a fix prior to the new batch arriving.

Maybe I can ask those with the wave problem to post here so we can actually have an idea of how many have the issue:

Can you post 1. If you have the wave issue 2. Have you arranged exchange.
