New Foxtel Hd

Recommended Posts

Just out of curiosity, what resolution do Foxtel broadcast in now? Isn't it 720i?

There's no such thing as 720i. The 1280x720 HD format is only in progressive format - i.e 720p.

With 480 and 576, there's both the i and p format - i.e 480i,480p,576i,576p.

Foxtel are currently outputting 576i.

I wonder how well the HD IQ will deinterlace and scale when outputting 720p or 576p when the source material is interlaced. It will be interesting the see how it compares to my Sharp LCD TV.

The package will include 2 HD Sport Channels and 2 HD Documentary Channels plus Movies on Demand (Its $10 per month for EITHER Sport OR Docu)

Does this mean that Showtime and Movie One/Two won't be available in the HD package? That would be a bit disappointing if the only movies in HD were Boxoffice ones.

Its only to start with, but never fear other Movie channels should get the green light later next year

sounds like an interesting job. can you tell us what kind of hardware they will be selling us us. From your previous posts, can I assume that as a current IQ Platinum subscriber, I will need to pay $199 for setup and an additional $5 per month subs? For this I will get 2 additional HD sport channels, 2 HD doco channels and all movies on demand in HD?

thanks again,

Roo

Not sure yet about the Hardware but i can tell you are correct with your assumption apart from the fact that the Set-Up fee could be anywhere between $99 and $249, still undetermined

By the way, do you know if foxtel has ever considered anything like the free satellite service that Sky UK has - http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/

IMO it would be the best way for Foxtel to compete with tivo... although you would need to get all the FTA networks on board.

If every channel on foxtel was the same quality as say showtime or fox sports, then sure, i'd be willing to pay a bit extra for HD channels; but until we get quality SD channels, you can forget paying any extra.

Do we get the first year of HD free, due to the **** quality of the current channels?

Current ESPN got to be upconverted 320 x 240?

Couldn't agree more, i refuse to watch soccer on ESPN, you cant even make out the players ffs.

I blame the lack of competition in the pay-tv market for the majority of foxtels woes, i suppose the lack of subscribers compared to the rest of the western world doesnt help either.

The Foxtel service is costing more and more. Currently we get lousy PQ and adverts for over $100 a month.

Now we are going to pay a premium for a few HD channels.

How HD are the HD channels going to be?

Every three years my Foxtel subscription adds up to a large screen HD TV. Am I getting value for money?

You can have all the content in the world but if most of that content is close to unwatchable what's the point?

I have been a subscriber for a long, long time but my patience is running out.

I'm looking for a decent deal on this HD service in 2008.

Let's hope so - and hopefully a few foxtel execs are reading this as well...

This is a crucial time for foxtel, with FTA networks starting HD channels, SD multichannels to come - Seven bringing out Tivo next year - Foxtel should be worried. This isn't like England where the FTA networks don't have the financial muscle to outbid pay-tv for major sporting events and programming - you can already look at Ten who have picked up NFL and Nascar.

If foxtel isn't prepared to invest a lot of money, bring their service up to scratch and make it available at more competitive prices then they might be in a bit of trouble.

As much as i'd personally love it aswell, its not in Foxtels plans but i can certainly pass these comments and get back to you when i know anything else as some of you (Laurie) seem to think i'm Foxtels CEO :P

I'd love to see an HD IQ - the more channels the better. Sport and movie channels on true HD please - then I'd pay extra

If they don't roll out enough channels to start, it won't be popular enough to penetrate the market

The best thing about it, from foxtel's point of view, is that it would very quickly see the number of people with a foxtel box in their home increase. Foxtel would quickly become the norm...

I'll pay the $15 extra if it reduces the amount of f*cking nonstop adverts shown on foxtel!! It is seriously getting beyond a joke, some shows it feels like there is as many minutes of ads as the actual show !!

I thought the whole point of PayTV is no ads and more shows?? the subscription cost pays for the shows, not adverts like FTA ??????

In fact with 24mb ADSL2+ and bittorrent my foxtel is becoming less and less used, even with IQ... that $15 almost cover the jump from 80 to 120GB a month d/l allowance!!

For an extra $15 a month, I'd be wanting 720P or 1080i for HD broadcasts, and every show widescreen - you'd almost think that would be a given with the exception of old footage replays etc. Having my NHL in 4:3 S(habby)D(efinition) is disappointing, especially when the commentators are constanting saying that it's Versus HD. Ideally, that extra $15 a month would be for HD channels and the equivalent HD IQ hardware as well. If Foxtel want to shake things up (and the probably should be thinking along those lines with the pending TiVo launch next year), then they really need to start considering the "value for money" factor of their service. It's a luxury for many (myself included) and with the costs of living as they currently stand, I'm sure that if they price this poorly (esp. with the crazy take up of big screen TVs), then they will do themselves more harm than good.

On the topic of ads, it is very interesting to read the Q and A's from the December FOXTEL Magazine. Have a read of the absolute sh*t of an answer for this question:

Q; My wife and I have a Platinum subscription to FOXTEL. With different interests we enjoy and appreciate the diverse range of programs very much. Our decision to go to FOXTEL, and pay money was primarily due to the level of advertising on the commercial channels. Can you please explain the introduction of advertising when we already pay? Brian Fallon.

A; When FOXTEL was allowed to start running advertisements we did so to supplement our income to keep prices as low as possible and acquire the best content for our subscribers. FOXTEL shows less than half the advertisements as free to air television on the channels that take advertising. We understand that our customers want us to keep advertising to a minimum and we are sensitive to that request while working to provide the best content and best value entertainment. We hope you continue to enjoy the service.

Edit: Just downgraded today.

When you consider that they never show ads during live sport, movies etc. that's probably true... however if the whole point of ads is to keep prices down, then the prices shouldn't keep rising.

I'd always expect ads but i agree, they are ridiculously repetitive and with higher sub fees they could cut down a little surely

$15 for the new set top box and HD sounds like a fair price.

This new set top box is a PVR, essentially a HD iQ. What about those that don't want PVR functionality? You going to make them pay $15 on top of what we already pay for something that we don't need? I may see a use for a HD iQ, but it is hard to earn money, but it is easier to spend it. FTA all the way!

How much extra is the IQ at the moment? I think its $15 and $10 for platinum. Does that mean that the HD service is the same price as the IQ or is it $15 more then the IQ.

Spot on mate.

I agree with you. Many of these culprits are the discovery channels, Arena, ESPN, Eurosport News, Weather Channel, SKY NEWS (Come on, why?) among others. Foxtel needs to think about the picture quality of the channels instead of focusing on recycling older episodes of shows (Notably Outrageous Fortune (a kiwi drama which is shot in widescreen) will be shown on arena (season 1), which isn't widescreen; whereas season 2 is on channel 10 and i think it's even in HD; i'll have to look into that). I really don't like watching 4:3 channels on my wonderful HD Plasma, not even the letterbox shows. I could just plug in my old tv and it'd be better to watch on it.

Just a side note, In my opinion ESPN has rights to big leagues, but the quality is shocking. Especially when the on screen scoreboards take up the entire top third. The funny thing is that over there, gridiron and the rest of the big 4 are in HD now, but not over here. It must be due to the source feed that foxtel gets. Come on ESPN, stop treating us like second class citizens and give us a good looking widescreen feed.

Oh... and also please for the Aussie SportsCenter, please spell it SportsCentre. It really isn't that hard...

not too many people seem interested in the new HD Foxtel package ?

When are Foxtel going to actually release the details so we can let them know if we're interested?

I'm in the same boat as many here - absolutely sick of the crappy picture quality on Fox (I have a HD TV), and the increasing number of ads, but stuck because there's no HD FTA in my area... Have recently bought an Xbox 360 so that is now providing HD entertainment in place of Foxtel from time to time...

I'm not interested in sport (HD or otherwise) but realise that others are. Movies, music, docos, kids, news (am I the only person who refused to watch Sky News Active election coverage because you couldn't even read the pixelated numbers on-screen?) in HD would be great

If I could swap my IQ box for a HD IQ and pay a little extra $ over my current platinum subscription, then I would certainly consider it, but I would definitely want to see proof that I am going to get what I would be paying for...

The only difference I see with the HD IQ over the std IQ is that:

1. it will be able to decode the HD signal and,

2. it will have a bigger hard drive and,

3. it will have HDMI outputting @720p and 1080i.

Everything other non-HD channel will stay the same in terms of bitrate and compression unless Foxtel are going to pump up bitrates on all channels when their capacity increases.

I would also like to see proof these new HD boxes deliver picture quality before I enter into some sort of long term contract or pay some huge setup fee. A free 1 month trial period would be great to see if Foxtel delivers on the hype. Somehow I don't think so.

Well I'm a prime candidate for HDIQ, as my 2 year subscription runs out mid december, currently on platinum with no IQ, i would look at upgrading to the newer HDIQ box instead of the current SD Pace unit.

However i would need to know more details about quality, price and content before making any decision.

The first year of Foxtel was good, and the last year has been nothing short of worthless programming, repeats and inconsistencies, not to mention ads and entertainment updates every 30 seconds.

I would be looking at downgrading or getting rid of Foxtel for 8Mb cable with unlimited off-peak instead of paying to see "Totally outrageous behavior" on FOX8, for the 6435 time for the last 6 months.

But i do think an IQ system would benefit me a little and change my viewing habits, however since buying a HD TwinTuner, i have no interest in low quality SD anymore... So HDIQ is an option for January.

ESPNHD, and DiscoveryHD would interest me and the price sounds okay, however i need to know the channels and content.

Movies on Demand worries me a little, This should mean that any of my FBO movies should be sent to my HDIQ box for me to view in HD.

But i would expect Movie One and Showtime Channels to be HD. (of course we don't need +2 channels anymore with an IQ system)

You would think Foxtels biggest drawcard for HD, would be "Every Movie 24-7 in HD, DD5.1, Ad Free!"

All movies these days should be HD capable as opposed to 95% of Foxtel programming,

which would only be 4:3 SD.

So ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD, Movie One, Showtime and FBO for $15 on top of platinum IQ price, is something i would consider, but nothing short of that!

The latest Foxtel magazine claims to keep an eye out over December for more news, and there are plenty of sources tipping an earlier January start, so i hope to learn more soon.

I also notice that Foxtel boast about how it now has the rights to distribute Channel 10 over it's HD box, but it doesn't mention Canberra....

This has long bothered me that i would need a seperate HD tuner to get the FTA channels via Foxtel, is another downside that Foxtels huge profits and increasing prices don't seem to reflect.
