I don't want to sound like a killjoy, but how do we know that this whole deal is legitamate. I mean is someone going to ring me on monday and say " uh yeah this is joe from ......... can i have your credit card details please?" Sorry Derek I don't mean to offend, it looks extremely well orgainsed and I am really keen on getting the 50" panny. Is it possible that we can ring the retailer back on the day to confirm or something?

Email of interest sent - 42 inch. :)

If possible, though, I may be better off waiting until after christmas, when spending lots of money on a TV may be more appropriate for me. Wonder if any deals will come along, like this, early next year?

If you're in Sydney you can pay the supplier directly at a shop front - may not help you if you're not in Sydney though! Anyway, I am assuming that it will be a store salesperson that contacts you, if this is the case you could always make arrangements with them to pay in person at the store!

Damnit you've busted my credit card scam!!!!

Wading through 200 emails daily and keeping my retailer cool calm and collected ensuring he won't have half of Oz calling him next week is not the way I'd run a scam :D

On Monday I'll be handing over everyone's purchase details to our contact and then he will start going down the list calling people to collect details and confirm purchases. If you're in Sydney I am encouraging you to attend the store and pay in person...thanking our contact in the process.

Just thought I 'd let you guys know that Panasonic is out of 50" PZ panels until Jan 2008.

If you want one, I suggest you go and get it now before they all sell out.

This is what I hear, I cant confirm how true this is though!

Are people getting the 3 yrs or 5 yrs warranty?

I put down for 5 yrs, but might change it if it alright with Derek.

'Extended warranty' and 'interest free finance' is where many retailers make their money. (especially in this case!!) It is a fair percentage of the purchase cost.

Articles such as this -

http://www.itnews.com.au/News/NewsStory.aspx?story=64307

- state that plasmas have a very good reliability. And actually single out the US version "Panasonic's 50-inch TH-50PZ700U"

There are a number of ways of looking at it:

- At a repair rate of ~2% one out of this group buy has a good chance of needing some attention.

- even then the 'average' repair cost isn't all that high.

- No doubt in 4 out of your 5 years time there will be something better and cheaper.

- Having said all this - it really is insurance and piece of mind.

Not an easy decision, but it depends on how you perceive the risk and how you feel about that risk

I personally think the manufacturers 1 year warranty is sufficient. Most electronic faults appear in the first 3 months (at least that's what they told me when I worked at telstra) and after that, most devices seem stable.

Anyway, the way technology keeps bringing out bigger and better stuff. This will soon end up in the kid's rumpus room.

I personally went for the extra 2 years warranty for a total of 3.

For the extra $$$ is just for the piece of mind for such an expensive item.

I'm usually ant-extended warranty, but in this case I agree, and the additional two years isn't all that expensive, compared to some I've seen.

After agonising through and failing to act on three other group buys, I'vd finally signed up to this one, for a 50" set - can't wait.

Not that think you're up to no good  but it has occurred to me too - I'm in Adelaide. It would be quite easy to come on this forum and get a bunch of people to sign up, then phone them all on Monday, say you're from some big brand shop, and put through their credit card details. So it requires a certain amount of good faith on the buyer's part, I suppose.

As I say, I have no doubts that everything is legit, but I think the question is quite legitimate too. If there was any way of paying in an SA branch of the same store I would be very interested to know, personally.

I'm interested to know whether people think that post-Christmas prices will get anywhere near these prices? Seems unlikely to me, personally.

As I say, I have no doubts that everything is legit,

The are numerous things that reassure me that everything here is ligit.

Mrmaxwell has been a member of the forum for 4 years and 410 posts, every aspect of his correspondence and behaviour has been appropriate for the (generous) task he has undertaken. The money is being collected by the retailer not Mrmaxwel.

The only slight doubt is how do you really know who is on the other end of the phone when it rings. This doubt is healthy - because we keep hearing in ACA and TodayTonight about bad people taking good ones for a ride (if you can get over the sensationalist/bias/inaccuracy of those shows)

My thanks to MrMaxwell for his hard work - I am 99.5% certain this will end very well.

There is no chance. I asked my GF to price a 50" at staff prices at JB HIFI, and lets just say that the price we are getting astounds me.

I am trying to sort my CC out so I can opt for the 50" otherwise I will have to settle for the 42" - will know in the next 45min :D

If you are that paranoid, when they ring, ask for their name and store branch location and tell them you will ring back.

Now go look up that branch's phone number on their website, or yellow pages, whatever.

Then ring and ask for that person.

Problem solved.

Unless the guy from the store is scamming you.

I think anyone with some common sense can tell pretty quickly if a deal does not sound right or not.

I've asked all Sydney buyers to complete their purchase in-store if possible! Hardly dodgy would you say?

Of course if you don't feel comfortable don't take part - simple. Freedom of choice is a great thing!

Edit: Patrick make sure you don't check out this thread when we're all salivating over our new displays :P

mrmaxwell - my apologies if it sounded like I was being at all accusatory!

mediaphite probably said it better than I did - it's good to just have some healthy skepticism to make sure you don't ever get taken for a ride, but there are plenty of reasons to be comfortable with you and all your good work. And I note that you are encouraging people to show up and pay cash in person in Sydney, which would of course not happen if there was any hanky panky.

Ok, I'm seriously considering getting the display, one question on the warranty though - since that warranty is through the retailer (based in Sydney), what happens if you're not in Sydney and you have a warranty claim, will it work through the local store of that retailer or would it have to be sent back?

Mrmaxwell, just to get this right, I sent my purchase confirmation, I hanven't received anything back. I'm assuming I'm not supposed to yet and that the retailer will contact me on monday?

Am I correct?

Yes correct.

Please ensure you update the wiki - I will be matching the wiki list to the purchase emails on Monday before forwarding to the retailer

maybe SOLIDsnake and mrmaxwell's words are too cryptic for me

Derek, can you please confirm that my order email has been received ? is there a way in the wiki to verify everyone's firm orders against the list ? a tick maybe ?

I read somewhere on here that Panasonic have run out of stock of the 50" and will not have any till January. Can someone in the know confirm or deny this? Does the GB retailer have enough stock of 50" to fulfill the GB order in one shot or will it be in dribs and drabs. This is kind of important to me as I am only in Newcastle for the next two months before heading back to Alice.

because it is a national retailer I would expect any branch of that retailer to honour the warranty. - But it's not for me to answer.

Warranty is provided by a third party with national coverage as the retailer is national.

Yes I've received your email and you have updated the wiki list.

My contact has told me there is plenty of stock around. Do you think Panasonic would run out of their hottest product 3 weeks before Xmas??? I certainly don't think so...

Hey Derek, is there any way the retailer can start going through the list and ring people to put their order through now? Assuming we have reached the min. number of poeple required for the GB price?

The retailer gets the full list Monday morning...I expect they will commence calls that afternoon or Tues. I will keep everyone updated don't worry.

For people in Sydney in-store purchase will be available from Tuesday - I'll be ordering on Monday hope you don't mind me getting the first order in
