Pioneer 8th Generation 508/428 Kuro Group Buy

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm also interested in th 508XD or LX508 - depeding upon price.

Just tossing this up with the Sony XBR. Sony XBR price is very compelling on the GB.

May I suggest you take a look at this GB as it has been very smooth and is so far hugely successful.

As numbr were known, one person negotiated pricing with a reputable dealer. We were then PM'd the pricing discount (cannot tell you sorry however, very compelling). We are then given the contact's name at the retailer and it is up to us to deal directly with them for delivery/payment etc. The service has been outstanding thus far. So take a look at the thread. And thanks for the work you guys are doing.

Please note that I will endeavour to send out one email per week to all those who have posted and/or PMd me regarding the group buy. This email will contain any major news that needs to be conveyed, but otherwise it will just keep you all up to speed on a breakdown of how many are interested, where they are located, and what the group is currently interested in. There will be no personal information displayed, just some raw data.

I will add this information to the FAQ.

I personally feel that the best way to go about the GB will be to have one negotiator (which is me at this stage), who negotiates a % off a RRP depending on how many people join, and makes sure that the rules posted in the FAQ have been met. From there, members of the GB are given all of the details (including shipping charges, refund procedure etc.), and they individually contact the retailer and make their deposit. The retailer opens a two week window within which people register with them, then once the two week period has ended, they count the amount of people who have signed up, and apply the discount as negotiated. I will need people to let me know once they have contacted the retailer to make sure that they do not try to undercount. GB members are then advised of the final price of their product, payment is made, and product is shipped.

I will be contacting other organisers of recent GBs to provide feedback on their experiences and what they would do differently. I am hoping they will have the time to post in this thread. The more information we have to learn from gives us the greatest chances of the best prices.

Oh, and btw, I am after a 508 720p for all those who are interested.

Please discuss ANY concerns you may have or ANY suggestions you may have. This really is a group effort (except I do most of the work! :P)

EDIT: Please note I will try to confirm once I have added your details to my register. If you do not hear from me regarding your expression of interest in 3-4 working days, please try to contact me again. I must apologise if I seem abrupt in my replies; it's likely because I'm trying to send quite a few PMs out in a short time!

First off, thanks GruG for organizing this.

I'm interested in a 508 720p or 1080p. Not sure yet - need to see them first. $$$ is also an issue. (Also considering the new Sonys.)

I'm in Canberra.

As mentioned by another poster, do check out the ongoing Sony GB. They've set it up very nicely: wiki, interactions with supplier, etc

The following would be ideal: the GB is organized through a national seller and each of us is able to pick up his/her unit from their nearest capital city. This will make it much easier for everyone to get after sales service. Personally I need a guarantee that I can return my unit if it has any dead/stuck pixels or if the unit buzzes etc. (Note that pixels and buzzing are NOT covered by warranty - it says so in the manual - but many people on AVS forums have been able to get an exchange)

I've had a look at this set up and I agree - they've made it work very nicely.

A wiki will be something I will be happy to set up if people are interested. I can move the FAQ there and have a permanent list of GB members.

A national seller limits us to HN, JB, Myer and DJs I think. Where else shall we try? This certainly would cut down on delivery costs, but obviously we'd need to deal with someone other than a sales droid. Any contacts would be appreciated.

I have contacted beejean and a few other GB organisers and asked them to share their experiences. Hopefully we will have something very similar to the Sony GB, it seems to have gone very well so far. ...touch wood.

Note that the Sony GB was not a national retailer, but even with freight has proved competitive for most other states, so I think the negotiator should go wider

Think the Wiki thing is a great idea.

The only suggestion I would make on top is that the details are put in a table rather than just in freetext (just a bit more html formatting). Format something like

no. | DTV ID | Models considering | Status | Comments

Status - similar to the sony PM sent, PM received, Ordered, Delivered

Comments - for user to put down how keen they are - eg. will buy depending discount, also considering xxx, looking for local dealer etc.

I thought delivery and installation for Pioneer displays was meant to be free or does that go out the window in a group buy situation??

If it's the case that it is still free who pays for delivery is it Pioneer or are the retailers expected to absorb this into their margin? Could affect the discount achievable against RRP.

wow - nearly 30 votes of interest already. ;)

Obviously there is a certain minimum cost price and we will need ever larger numbers of group buy participants as we approach that cost price - as the retailer has to make a margin :)

It would be good to identify a retailer and negotiator in each state as I expect this group buy to get so big that we may have numbers that allow us to achieve the discount we are after at specialist retailers.

The reason I suggest this is that retailers like DJ's, Harvey Norman etc. will already be buying in bulk - and may be less willing to negotiate on margins, whereas a deal of this size could allow a specialist retailer to increase their sales volume to a point where they start to get a better deal from pioneer. This might encourage them to give us a better deal as it increases their margin on non group buy purchases.

What are the thoughts of the group - are we likely to get a better deal from a national retailer like HN or a series of smaller specialist stores.

Cheers,

Mark

Good point. I am aware that delivery and warranty is supposed to be included with any purchase, but in a group buy situation I am unsure. Whether it is the retailer or Pioneer who bear the costs for delivery I am uncertain; obviously if it is the retailer then the costs of shipping inter rather than intra state would be much higher. This will need to be clarified with any discussions with a retailer.

Rest assured, for any group buy to go ahead, as per the terms stated in the FAQ, it MUST be significantly cheaper for a member to purchase through the GB than to purchase individually. This will include costs of delivery, and warranty.

I would be surprised if the 5 year Pioneer warranty was not inclusive on the RRP, even if it is a group buy.

A point of concern is speculation that the LX (1080p) models will only be available at select retailers, and that these select retailers will not be stocking XD (720p) models. Only speculation at this stage, but this would make it difficult to do a group purchase of these various models.

Still, no point in dragging things down until we know more. Until then, continue to register interest. I will have a wiki up for reference this evening.

Good point.

Ideally, perhaps, we have a few people try out in each state with a number of different retailers, including specialist retailers.

Then they can report back which retailer offers the highest % off of RRP at given intervals. (e.g. 5% off for 5 people, 7% off for 10, etc..)

I will then collate this data and figure out what represents the best option - whether we split the GB into the different states with one retailer each (if we have a high amount of numbers in each state), or whether it would be cheaper for all to go with one retailer offering significant discounts. It would just depend on what we can negotiate with the retailers.

Thoughts?

LOL.

I have a way of making things sound far more complicated than they are. You will have to excuse my eloquence :P.

I assure everyone that we will have a clear and concise process which you will all understand.

The process of building feedback into the GB is why I am so keen on getting this up and running early, instead of just launching headlong into the process.

May I just say that it has been very encouraging so far - a HIGH level of interest before the product has even been released, and a number of very useful suggestions.

I've read several comments on this thread about getting a group discount off RRP.

That's not what you want. Nobody, not even the specialty stores, is going to be selling these sets at their RRP.

Wait till the street prices settle down and then see what kind of a discount you can get off that. Admittedly, the disadvantage is that doing so might take some time.
