New Pioneer 8th Gen Plasmas 508 Etc

Recommended Posts

The retail on this is $18K from memory. Its ridiculous how much this has been discounted - obviousy not selling.

If Sony release that 70" LCD in Oz, it will easily be half price in the first month!!

I hope the LX508D (1080p 50") is under $10K - I will snap it up

As you say, at a true 20000:1 contrast ratio, this is the proverbial QUANTUM leap over anything on the market. It seems to be faultless!!

True, but the 508D Pioneer out now in the UK/US - the non-1920 set - has a 16000:1 contrast ratio. I'm willing to be convinced but I wonder how much better the "true HD" set will be. As I said, most of the reviews say that the 1365 x 768 Pioneer set already blows away the non-Pioneer 1920 sets on the market. There's more to picture quality than the number of pixels on the screen.

That's the Commercial Panasonic version - no RRP on their website. What about the domestic version? Any extra features?

I look at this way - if 1920 is availabe I want to make full use of Blu-Ray

More the difference between, say, and Audi RS4 and an Audi A8. A modicum of extra luxury/driving pleasure with the latter at a LOT more money.

What is on average a rough % differential between WXGA & FHD?

Here are the CANADIAN RRPs for the new Pioneers (both 768 and 1080) - as of June 6 this year

PDP-4280HD (768p, 42-inch) $C 2999

PDP-5080HD (768p, 50-inch) $C 3999

PDP-5010FD (1080p, 50-inch) $C 5999

PDP-6010FD (1080p, 60-inch) $C 7999

Remember these are CANADIAN Recommended Retail Prices

At present exchange rates, the equivalent in Aussie Dollars to the above prices would be:

PDP-4280HD (768p, 42-inch) $A 3569

PDP-5080HD (768p, 50-inch) $A 4579

PDP-5010FD (1080p, 50-inch) $A 7139

PDP-6010FD (1080p, 60-inch) $A 9519

Remember, that's a straight conversion at current exchange rates. The Aussie RRPs of these sets once they hit the local market will surely be higher. Like Yanks, Canadians pay less than we do for their toys.

That's a 50% differential - bit steep, but I guess it is based on demand.

It is a bit steep for twice as many pixels

Sure Blu-Ray will make use of more pixels if they're there but it doesnt mean a better picture quality at all. Resolution is important but about 4th on the list as there are way more important factors to getting a better picture. The 1080p panels as theyre really a 1st generation still have some catching up to do on other 768p panels.

I agree, $2k more for the 1080p is too much for me. Then again, I ain't particularly interested in Blu/Ray or HD-DVD until the "war" is over and the selection improves. I sit 3.5-4 metres from the screen, and my eyes are ageing along with the rest of me , so I very much doubt if I'd be able to tell much of a difference anyway.

I visited a specialist dealer late last week who sells both Pioneer and Panasonic. He had both the Pioneer 507 and the Pana 70a set up. We had a play with them. There was absolutely no doubt the Pioneer was quite a bit better, at least to my eyes. Not that the Panasonic was "bad", far from it, and at the price they're going for now they are an absolute bargain.

Don't forget, all Pioneers are made in Japan and you get a five year warranty plus delivery AND setup included in the price. This bridges the price gap to Panasonic to some extent, but you're still gonna pay more for Pioneer.

The point is we are given CHOICES Pioneer are giving us choices that suits OUR own needs I agree in some circumstances 768p is just as good as 1080i/p depending on content and your pocket, just enjoy what you get :P

cheers laurie

(didn't see it mentioned yet)

PDP508XD Review is up at HDTV Test (16th August)

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Pioneer-PDP508XD/

I find these guys reviews pretty fair and unbiased.

Not a bad review.

I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing the 50" & 60" 1080p models running tomorrow morning at Pioneer :D

Saw Pionners 8th gen 508 at pioneers in house trade show last week.

The blacks are a lot better, however Pioneer have cut cost with installs ... 22 Staff have been sacked over a month ago. Thanks to Yasuo Sakuma the new CEO from Japan.

I have had so many people ring me up to reinstall a panal and / or configure the pasma , the installers are far from good, no more in house pioneer as its a 3rd party . And the 8th Gen will be 6K

There are still a couple of good installers that will give you the extra time to cali your new plasma. Shane and Jole. Dont know if they are both on however they are by far the best. The other are just drones and back yarders.

Fujitsu has a new line of 1080p panels also coming. Free install comes with Fujitsu as of Nov 07

Panasonic is looking great with the 10th

Future looks grerat for plasma

The retail for the PDP-508XD (768p) in the UK is ₤2500. At 0.4 exchange rate that translates to A$6250.

Adding 50% for PDP-L508XD (1080p) makes it A$9375, so round it to A$9995

How's my guestimating?

We eagerly await your feedback then (especially what you think of its handling of Blu-Ray)!!

O.k People, I just got back from a demo of the new Pioneer LX508 1080p 50" plasma this morning. Before anyone asks, there is no confirmed release date or price. No, i didn't see the standard 508 running.

I'm sure anyone interested in the new Pioneer line-up has checked out all the OS reviews, forums, etc..... Let me just say that NOTHING can prepare you for the real thing!

For a start the design is very clean and simple. Gloss black, clean & sharp lines. The gloss black finish looks much nicer than the older 507 gloss surround. I only saw about 10 mins of Blu-Ray demo material.

The first thing i saw was a red rose in the center on the screen. The blacks are so good you would swear the plasma was turned off and the rose seemed to be floating in front of the screen. The next thing was a very dark scene of a guy in a black leather coat with SLR cameras etc.... looked like he was in a dark room. Any other plasma i have seen would have crushed the blacks to oblivion. Every crease, fold and stich on his coat were clearly visible.

Being a 1080p machine the level of fine detail was simply stunning! If anyone has ever seen the 5000ex you will know what i mean. I was back about 2.5 meters from the screen and cloud see the smallest detail without even trying.

Next was a clip of P.O.T.C. The level of depth & detail was astounding! It was a pretty dark scene and nothing was lost at all. Next would be the colours. They were SO vivid and punchy without being over blown. The skin tones were pretty much spot on while the colours next to it were popping out, beautiful! Also while watching the Pirates clip in 2:35:1 ratio you could not see ANY light bleeding from the top & bottom bars. As good as it looked it was only 2 days out of the box & without calibration. So i'm sure it could be improved even more. All i can say is "seeing is believing" !

The ONLY big problem i see with this panel.... is getting it past the wife ;)

Thanks Nightbreed. This mini-preview has got me very excited about the new Pioneers and I'm very interested in the 5000ex replacement.

Did you also see a 60" by any chance ?

Unless your where viewing in the dark, you cant make any meaningful judgment on blacks.

I spend 8 hours a day viewing high-end plasma and projectors. I think i can make an assessment on decent black levels compared to most quality panels on the market. Remember, this was a 10 minute demo and just my opinion.

I have plenty of experience myself, but I would never venture an opinion on black levels without seeing the display in the dark with suitable video content.

I have no doubt the Pioneer sets new standards for Plasma blacks, but that is not a good yardstick in my view.

Black is a complete absence of light, so if the Pioneer’s cannot display true blacks in a dark room (which I am confident they can’t) they really only have a darker shade of grey. The question then becomes how much bias lighting is required in the room to get blacks that really look black to the eye.
