New Pioneer 8th Gen Plasmas 508 Etc

Recommended Posts

I should say however that I am not an AV aficionado and am quite happy with my Sony CRT and dodgy foxtel feed at present. Now if foxtel had HD then I'd definately buy a new tv now.

So ones to assume you think Foxtel HD will be better than FTA HD or put it in another way you think its not worth a new toy to watch FTA HD which by the way includes sports

cheers laurie

I take your point Laurie I do watch the sport via the HD settop box. But come on who could go past the Lifestyle food channel in HD. Just need smell-a-vision!!!

Well we still don't know what channels Foxtel will have in HD[they said a couple] it still may be only 720p and of course the way it's delivered may well be HD lite

Sure if you send me your email addresses.

BUT

Could someone who knows about these things put it up somewhere for everyone to download? I'm not always near my pc and it's a big files that will eat into my upload / download allocation that I usually reserve for p*rn downloads (joke!)

Could you please send me the LX608 manual please ?

Send to mrc@iinet.net.au

Well tonight I saw HD DVD (thru the Xbox addon) on my 508 for the first time. Outrageously stunning!! Talk about WAF - she was blown away. We watched Transformers (wife + kid for the second time as they saw it at the flicks, me first time) and it just defied superlatives.\

I had watched a couple of good DVD transfers on the set beforehand (such as Casino Royale), but was unprepared for the difference high def would make. Then after Transformers, put on standard DVD of Star Wars Ep 1 and thought it was soft, which in comparison of course it was. After about 15 mins forgopt about the comparison to what I just watched, and then realised that this was the best I had seen this movie (probably fourth viewing) by an absolute mile.

Still loving this unit.

Howdy all

Have been following the 507 and now the 508 for a long time with the view to purchase. Have also followed the threads in these forums for a while too and picked up some great info. Saw the 508 today for the first time and on the one hand was absolutely blown away by the blacks however I couldnt help but feel the picture was a bit soft. I must stipulate though had I saw the panel by itself I wouldnt have noticed however they had a panasonic 1080p on one side of it and a Hitachi on the other. The Hitachi's blacks werent even close but i must admit the panasonic was tack sharp. Now my question is.. how much does the store setup have to do with comparing panels? They were all playing Fantastic Four Bluray. Cheers

I don't know about everybody else, but i have not found the 508 as 'astounding' as it is supposed to be. I have tried all differnt combination and found that:

- full screen motion is juttery no matter what setting you have it on (ie full screen panning, not just somebody moving their hand).

- moving text is crap eg on the bottom of the news where they show the latest news updates

- the TV cannot handle reds. They become very pixelated when there is a considerable amount of red on the screen

- cannot handle motor racing. The image look like they morph from across the screen and the motion is not fluid at all.

- again with the reds, the vodafone racing red looks like fluoro pink and it cannot display this properly.

The TV does have great blacks and vibrant colours, but compared to a CRT TV, you get motion sickness. This is on both HD and SD. Sure the pictures look fantastic when there is not much happening onthe screen, but lets face it movies these days are action packed with heaps of motion and this TV falters in this department. Thing is, i don't know if there is a plasma/LCD out there that does handle these things, but you would expect that it should be better than CRT, not worse...

Was it set on Dynamic? If so, choose Movie mode, switch off all noise reduction features, make sure sharpness is set to around -12 (this fixes the text issue you are talking about).

Those in the know, would probably say an ISF calibration would help ?

I'm impressed about your comments for High-Def but hear it is so disappointing for Motor sports\action and alike is heart breaking (since I am considering purchasing one).

Wow i only have the old one but love the motor racing

I found the reds poor but if you go piture/pro adjust/colour detail/ colour temp/ then turn that to/ mid-low I found it improved the reds and skin colours heaps infact this plus putting it on 100hz is all i did to mine..Hope it helps

Most Plasmas suffer from Red push to some extent. The NEC has what they call a "Crimson Filter"

The Old Ferrari red used to jump out of the screen in a most unnatural manner. That is why advertisers use that colour so often makes their adverts stand out from the rest.

Ferrari are using a different shade of red this year which does not do it.

Drive mode setting is at 2, i experimented with all different mode settings iincluding my own user setting. I have since changed the colour configuration which is now better, but have not watched any motor racing yet. Its not my reception becuase i have some 40 - 50 channels (all sydney and wollongong) and all at 90% - 100% signal strength.

It seems that most of the custom user setting available are for elite systems or other systems, not the 508XDA. Does anyone have any settings specifically for this TV that work correctly all round? it sucks that you would have to change the settings for each individual genre of tv viewed.

the internal DTV tuner is disappointing I think an external HD STB would help and that is what I am going to use on my LX but having seen KING KONG on a 50 inch DXA played on a HD DVD it was stunning almost 3D and very detailed picture even the dark rock faces in shadow had good detail and you could see individual stubble on the face of one character being picked out by the sun light. I will use mine for mostly BLU RAY movies some ordinary DVDs and HD FTA through philips HDMI HD STB. no its not as good as crt but its getting very close and its a lot bigger and thinner just needs very good source. roll on January sales
