No need to take things personal there, you explained why whereas the last poster simply did it so as to say "I expected the usual tripe and that is what I got"... after a single episode. That is just asking for the criticism given.

Comparing it to Epic Movie? Give me a break. That show only got to air for the names behind the series (Scary Movie titles) and failed after being seen. That is not comparable to Heroes which has, and will, receive a decent following a full season schedule for the simple fact that it is a good show.

Don't agree with that? Fair enough, just don't go in the middle of a thread and state a useless argument about stereotypical characters after spotting them. Hiro, the character, is closer to a stereotype of a nerd than anything else - what is wrong with that?

Highlight to read:

Just look at when he comes back from the future on the train speaking full English with the sword, it wipes that stereotype away for good.

Link? The spoiler was from around episode 7 IIRC and is written in white so that people don't read it by mistake. Press CTRL+A to see it clearly.
Clever boy. Never even saw the white on this screen.

Thanks for your response, LBM, I appreciate you are passionate about the show. It's just that I thought thudabot got worked a little too hard for what he said, and if you re-read his post he is clear that he stays away from most commercial tv shows, as many of us do, because there is a lot of garbage out there, as Neon Kitten points out with NCIS, CSI et al. But to me he didn't go in expecting tripe, he was prepared to give it a fair shake (as I was) and was disappointed with the result, that's all.

Please be careful with what you attribute to people, I never directly compared Heroes to Epic Movie, you are absolutely correct that it would be a very silly comparison as Heroes is clearly trying to do something completely different. Neon Kitten asserted that the show was popular and therefore is almost certainly good. I was just pointing out that popularity and viewing numbers are not necessarily a sign of quality, and used Epic Movie to illustrate that point. I'm not trying to split hairs, just that there is a difference between the two statements.

And of course there's nothing wrong with a nerdy stereotype, most stereotypes have some grounding in actuality, but I guess I was hoping for a little more subtlety. Stereotypes are easy to use, and easy to write but I guess I like things a little 'edgier' these days. I'm sorry if it appeared that I was a latecomer to the thread, but I too watched the show, I read all the posts first and then felt I had something to contribute re the merits or otherwise of the show. If I thought my argument was useless I wouldn't have posted it.

I am my own harshest critic ...

Anyway, your enthusiasm for the show has ensured that I will give it another chance over the next few weeks.

Absolutely, there is so much rubbish on that is 'popular' (according to the current ratings system).

However, in this case, 'Heroes' is definitely a popular show that (I believe) is worth watching. It even beat '24' in the ratings in the US to be the top show for it's night, which is quite an achievement.

wow i didn't expect such a fuss.....

and yes i did actually watch the whole thing.

why do people keep insisting on giving US ratings figures to proove a show is popular and therefore must be good?? I don;t need ratings to tell me what i think is good. just because the masses like somehting it doesn't necessarily make it good.

people - you can all enjoy what you want but surely you must question some things. i just found myself rolling my eyes too often at the dialogue and come on - is there anything that's new here?

1. guy thinks he can fly

2. girl can heal herself.

etc etc

Popular definitely doesn't always equal good! However, in this case, I personally believe it is good - and it happens to be popular. Obviously not everyone likes it, but that's with everything.

if people don't like the show... its pretty simple... don't watch it!!

and quite rightly popular doesn't mean good ....

I'm giving Heroes a chance and seeing where the show goes... for me it looks promising..

I'm actually impressed with Chanel 7 Line up this year....

And quite rightly, popular doesn't mean bad either. If I misinterpreted the messages here then I apologise, it is clear that both sides have had their say and it has worked out in the end. Hopefully this clears this all up and we can continue to talk about the show as this thread intended.

By what exactly? Heroes is about the only decent thing on the network.

When is there ever anything 'new'? Hell once you cull the endless cop/crime/lawyer/hospital dramas there's pretty much nothing left.

Yep, you're right there. We seem like a pretty discerning bunch, weary of the hackneyed stereotypes trotted out by the networks, why don't we all get together, make a hybrid of everything that's on, and pitch it to the Big Three networks in the States?

Hmm, let's see ... ok, the show starts with a group of obese forensic investigators flying home to the US from a conference in Australia (all ethnic bases to be covered) when their plane mysteriously crashes on to a remote island. They are forced by an unseen controller to investigate the deaths of three generations of previous crash victims by exhuming their bodies. They are also told by the controller/s (insert initials of shadowy government agency here) that they must now compete with each other: the first to reach a specified weight goal and fulfil their corpse quota will be granted superhero powers back home, eg being able to sniff out corpses with their new supersmell (spinoff potential). Plus, the viewers at home get to vote off the forensic scientist they hate the most each week after they all have to sing a song. The show will be in real-time ie one tv hour equals one real hour, will be shot on a hand-held camera and to spice it up we can have a bunch of skinny terrorists land on the other side of the island with a suitcase nuke.

I tell ya, we can't miss ....

Santa's Notes: Volume II - Heroes, Ep 2.

  • Programme starts with ... pretentious shyte again!
    .
  • "Action" moves to silly hackneyed, cliched "smoke filled room", loaded with "the kinda stuff geneticist geniuses probably have in their offices".
    .
  • Ridiculous stereotypical "interrupt the gas man" followed by a "fight sequence #233" (from the Cliche Collection of standard fight routines). Note #233 is the one that ends with surprise wonder woman momentarily saving the day.
    .
  • Enter ConstoKid®, as aptly named character as you'll ever find! Is ConstoKid® a lampoon, played by Chris Lilley, by any chance? :P
    .
  • Isaac Seer and his girl "you need to rest". OK, all too familiar, but that's to be expected... oh, wait a minute! "I can't watch you die too. You need to make a choice..." Did I just hear that right? Wasn't that #481 from the Book of Cliches?
    .
  • "PornoKiller" sitting in car at lights watches back video. OH! Surprise, surprise! The vision goes, but the sound remains. Can't call that a cliche! But wait ... there's more! The audio ... no, don't tell me. Ah, great! It's a comedy after all ... the shouting & screaming effects had to be a joke.
Yep ... they must be taking the mickey ... the phone starts ominously ringing just as she's watching listening to the critical "screamfest" moments! :P
    .
  • OK, I get it now. It is taking the piss. No self-respecting producer & director would include the next scene (video'd digging with SelectShovel at the designated spot and finding ... oooooh!).
    .
  • The professor's son is a walking cliche. I can't put it any simpler. The whole character is a cliche. No ifs. No buts.
    .
  • BTW "PornoKiller" sure has plenty of mirrors just lying (or should I say, standing) conveniently around!
    .
  • WTF? It's one thing for that "generic middle-eastern" background music to be used to set the scene for all those "terrorist" characters/plots/locations in US dramas ... but, why here? Job lot, perhaps?
    .
  • OK, the most cliched, hackneyed, lamest scene to date ... ConstoKid® picks up the gun whilst the cops standby to storm in when the director gives the nod. Truly, I expected better. Subtle? My arse!
    .
  • Back to the ClicheKid® (professor's son) ... wtf? What answering maching records when you pick up the phone and are talking? Maybe I missed something!
    .
  • Uh, oh ... not the portable mini hard-drive cliche! :P
    .
  • And the bleeping as the screen fills with "encrypted" text simply by switching on/or plugging in the hard-drive! Help! Gotta get outa here! I cannae take much more of this! :D
    .
  • <Final cliche removed, coz I've forgotten what it was!>
    .
  • Ends with more of the pretentious drivel that starts each show.
    .

So, the verdict after two shows, now?

Could do (a lot) better! :P

Santa you have to be the biggest dick head around - truly!! I can't believe still you are giving this pathetic commentary. You ALWAYS give your opinions so here is mine - GIVE THE SHOW A CHANCE YOU LONELY BASTARD. SERIOUSLY. Just watched episode 14 of Heroes and was amazed at the genius of it - yet you still think your so funny posting all this crap about ConstoBoy and complaining NO END.

Get ****ed.

Touchy touchy!

Hit a raw nerve, didn't I!

BTW: You can't believe I'm still "giving this pathetic commentary" ... and go on to shout "GIVE THE SHOW A CHANCE YOU LONELY BASTARD. SERIOUSLY" ... Well which is it? Give it a chance - which means watching and commenting, or shutting up like a good little zombie? :P

Are you trying to be an idiot or does it come naturally (Santa)? If you don't like the show and insist on telling everyone then why are you still watching? Your posts say more about you than Heroes.

See above.

And, yes, the comments - fanatisicm - do say something about the posters.

If anyone is sad enough to find this stuff so special it needs such heated defence, then they deserve to think what they are getting is quality! :P:P:D

Maybe a few fanatics need to calm down, take off the cosplay outfits, and get a life outside the latest sci-fi convention! :P

NB: If this hadn't been touted on the forum so much as the greatest thing since sliced bread, then maybe I would have been a little more forgiving on it. (Then again, maybe some day I'll post a really bad* review! You think what I said was bad? I was being kind to it! But perhaps some people wouldn't know the stalest of cliches if they were run over by it?)

PS: Are you American? Have trouble with comments made with tongue-in-cheek? Maybe just a bit constipated?

well im with santa on this one i agree with almost everything he said, i just can't be bothered typying for that long...

i also got a bit of a pasting about being critical.

i've always been curious and love a bit of a debate

i just want to understand why people would like such a show - please let us know what you find appealing about it????

do people these days know what cliches are? or red herrings? or are people willing to watch anything just because they have different characters/names even though the premise and most of the action/dialogue/ideas have been done to death previosly?

i almost got to the end of 1st series of LOST, then lost interest. PRISON BREAK - i think i lasted 2 episodes.

HEROES - this is becoming like driving past an accident. I want to look because people are saying it's going to improve but i can't see it.

bleh

It even beat '24' in the ratings in the US to be the top show for it's night, which is quite an achievement.

How is that an achievement?

Being better than '24' wouldn't be particularly difficult... and the fact that 'Heroes' outrated it might be more indicative of how the same old 'Jack saves the U.S. and consequently the World' scenario has gotten mightily stale for even the most die-hard George W. Bush supporter.

I've tried to give 'Heroes' a chance, but to be brutally blunt, it has the pacing of a rampaging slug on tranquilizers. 'Lost' is a masterpiece of well paced and clever invention by comparison.

I really would like to give this show a chance, simply because of the lack of good sci-fi these days... but if the first two episodes are typical of the series - I'm not very likely to continue watching a show that appears to be straining itself to be all things to many people without really being anything in particular.

I get the sense that the show is a committee effort; and for those who know what most committee outcomes are, it doesn't bode well.

Some people like discussion and debate.

And criticism - positive and negative.

Some people will give a show a go, but will comment on what they think of it.

I've said both positive and negative things about the show.

Those who never accept criticism should really be looking closer at themselves.

Healthy debate with plenty of tongue-in-cheek commentary. What's wrong with that?

Some here can deal with it in a mature way. Others just run off and dress up to play with their playstation!

Heroes has it's faults, I love it, but it won't be to everyone's liking, the whole x-men clone characters rings true to some degree, it's lucky they are trying to move a little away from that more recently.

It seems a little extreme to slag off people who are expressing an opinion about it...

Well, I've heard this show gets better, and I'm quite enjoying it so willing to give it a shot.

It's a bit hard to tell so early on... at this time of year the networks are promoting everything they've picked up as the best thing since sliced bread, and the only way to tell is to watch and make your own judgement.

I mean people still love My Name is Earl and Grey's Anatomy.. but for me the former is just not that funny, and the latter deteriorated into a feeble soap opera in no time at all. But that's just my opinion.

For now, I'll stick with Heroes until I decide it's crap. That may happen next week, or maybe never... we'll see.

I think you'll be sticking with it, Heroes is definitely not crap. I don't understand the "oh it just gets better & better" comments, it was excellent from the start. I watched episode 14 yesterday - and it is one of the best things on TV right now. Right up there with BSG as the best SF.

Something else I can't understand is comments like "PRISON BREAK - i think i lasted 2 episodes" - some people obviously have very short attention spans. Shows like Prison Break & Heroes are TV shows not movies - they have extended character development & story lines - they don't need to wrap the story up in 90 minutes like some mindless action flick.

Heroes is looking t o be a good show atm, being a new Toppy owner Im just Recording stuff to test it out.

welcome to the toppy club - have you tried out PBK, Just EPG and ICE? nice additions....

I wish they supersized the heroes episodes.... 1 hour is not enough, specially if you are introducing the plot and characters....

Now I know why Santa has such rosy-red cheeks. It's from having your tongue stuck there for extended periods! I did enjoy that critique though, thanks Santa.

I just finished watching the second ep (God bless PVR's) and it was certainly better than the first ep but I can understand people being disappointed as I don't think it's the greatest thing I've seen, but I will stick with it a bit longer as there are some very passionate people supporting it. The problem is maybe not so much with the show but rather with the uber-hype of the modern world, everything is the greatest thing you've ever seen. The way 7 plugged this over summer it would make Twin Peaks and other TV benchmarks look like McHale's Navy, Heroes was going to be that good.

The biggest improvement in ep 2 was ConstoKid (love it, Santa!) stopped his high-pitched Big Apple celebrations. I haven't heard squealing like that since Deliverance! :D Just please, please, please don't bring in any 'shadowy government conspiracies', if the cheerleader's dad turns out to be a gov't agent/scientist the scream of space/time anguish I'll emit will send ConstoKid back to the Dark Ages. I started watching Prison Break and Surface but was turned off as soon as the conspiracy stuff started. X-Files cornered the market on this TV genre, and it's hard to treat White House conspiracies seriously at the moment when the incumbent can't even spell the word.

If you ask me, we need a show with some originality. The hero should sport a 'tash that shows he's a real man, he should drive a Ferrari and be chased by a pair of Dobermans ..............

I just realised anyone who is watching Heroes now, had to deal with the hype factor, I forgot about that.

Hype sucks, it can turn a great movie into a very average movie, or a good movie into pure crap, same with TV, hype something to much, and by the time you watch it, your let down because it can't possibly live up to the hype, even if it was good.

In fact with TV, the station can continue to ruin the show by constantly hyping up the next episode, the old "this episode will blow your socks off" crap, and you watch it and yeah, it the same as every other episode, Lost falls badly into that trap, so you can end up being constantly let down.

I started on Heroes back when I had never even heard about the show, a friend dropped it off, and then it sat around gathering dust for a week or so, then I got bored and watched it, and was blown away by it.

The benefit of going into something with no hype, or even knowing what it was about, the networks could learn something there.

Likewise I'm thinking of waiting a year now to watch HappyFeet, loved the QT trailer, but all the press and media hype have now got me going out of my way to avoid it...
