The studio shots in Sunrise and morning News were definatly 'Full HD' - no upscaling there at all.

Home and Away is just a bad egg...

Well seeing that you're in Sydney, you might be able to get Prime with a good UHF aerial pointed south. I get Prime using an indoor aerial.

Though at this point with the limited content I've seen, I'm not too sure whether it is native 1080i or whether Prime is just internally upscaling the 576p.

Yeah. From my brief look at Prime Newcastle whilst H&A was on tonight it looked rather poor. Very grainy.

As I said, I remember hearing somewhere that Home and Away (and the other locally produced 'HD' programming from Seven, not live HD though) has some 'modified' Digibeta 576PsF in the production chain?

@LBM - Torrents are great! Blame my crappy (yet highest plan they offer) optusnet broadband connection.

I think I will stick with full speed and not needing to upload where possible. I was only able to seed for a while with this but it did get over a 2:1 ratio before other people in the house were complaining they couldn't use the internet (that is where I don't like torrents).

Back on topic, a comparison to one of the shots.

Prime - 1080i (From thread)

Seven - resized to 1920x1080

Look at the oversaturated image that we get from Seven as well as that awful watermark. It isn't hard to understand why people dislike Seven here and at other sites.

Thank you for uploading the clip - hopefully it will reach more people who are interested. As if I'd ask you to remove it !

@Winston, seriously Sunrise looked amazing. Very 'fine' detail, rich colours, and surprisingly refreshing considering the bobbing 'HD' crap to date.

Thank you for providing the example comparison - the plot thickens

Yes ur right.. they seem to be stat muxing..

Bad points are.. hopefully they will fix

1. not unconverting

2. still very jumpy when going to ads and returning

I am sure that seven OB is SD only, so Prime 1080i must be upcoverted -- so wait until native HD programs are aired . I agree 576p is not HD maybe extended definition but certainly no more lines to improve the actual resolution of the picture. If SBS and ABC going 720p for HD I could live with seven also being 720p but prefer 1080i.

was there a reason why prime didn't broadcast 1080i in the first place?

"Wasn't there this whole hoo haa over Seven not allowing Prime to broadcast in 1080i?" - Reuder7

i would like to know myself

I'm sure you'd know anthonysimilion :P:D or anyone else

EDIT: don't worry, question answered, thanks anyway

What was the answer? Was it 7 not allowing PRIME to go 1080i?

I'm sure Seven (and anyone else) could hire HD OB equipment, if they truly desired.

yes but it would cost money!, and even more so after AFL deal and no foxtel onsale of some matches they are under cost / budget pressures. I am fairly sure that at least until recently NBN was the only broadcaster with in house HD OB capability, that is why ten making a deal that they will broadcast AFL matches in HD dont know if in house or contracted out. this may put pressure on seven to OB in HD the AFL if not this year next. this would apply to all sports soon after . cheers alan

Yeah, if that was the initial reason for going 576p at the start, doesn't really matter

So how is Prime telling us its native 1080i as oppose to upscaled 1080i

ABC tells us

Nine tell us

Ten has no watermark on HD

Seven a lie

Prime ?

cheers laurie

Um, who cares? You can tell by looking?

Just a note though — Prime's HD watermark (on the Sunrise shots) look very generous (in the evil spectrum of watermarks; well it is a news program so it doesn't have the same artistic value as a movie): They have a nice small watermark for your nice big screen. If everyone just made their watermarks x-by-x pixels, then there never would be this problem of "huge" HD watermarks (which, I'm sure, some foolish executives have cast a decision using the same screen sizes to compare SD against HD version watermarks).

As for Home & Away, no surprises they're cheating there. This should get very interesting if they are found to count that towards their HD quota (not that they would actually need to, since Sunrise and a couple of movies fill the quota by itself); this is now good enough to catch them on the strict letter of the regulations and bring it up with the ABA.

More interestingly, though, is The Great Outdoors. When that next goes to air, can someone capture it? That'll be the biggest question.

CK.

From recollection, the Great Outdoors seems to have that same pseudo-25fps effect that Home and Away does. Though hopefully, I'm wrong.

Winston you beat me to it by 2 minutes! I actually think its now a rather

amazing up convert. To my eyes it looks great, true 1080i. But screenshots tell another story upon pixel-peeping inspection.

BTW My PRIME HD looks cleaner then your screenshots, perhaps JPG compression?

My points of observation:

-Sunrise on PRIME SD was full of jaggies, eye lids, hair, glasses etc

- PRIME HD displayed a MUCH improved picture, clean picture, detailed, full of resolution, should look fantastic on any screen (studio shots only)

- Definatly much better than the 576p they used to put out

- Less than Perfect again looks much nicer, but I can see some jaggies.

- I cant say for certain, but if PRIME HD stays 1080i then I am totally happy with the quality so far.

Will be interesting when they broadcast Heroes and Prison Break, I have original TS streams to compare with.

Screenshots (look for slight jaggies on hair - tell tale signs of upconvert)

I forgot that I get both Seven and Prime, so here are some comparison screenshots:

Example 1:

http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/9029/70ef7.jpg

Example 2:

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/5084/bbky2.jpg

Example 3:

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1208/cawc2.jpg

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/7038/cbir2.jpg

There's more detail in Prime's broadcast, but not that much. Since Less than Perfect is broadcast on ABC in the US, would it only be 1280x720?

@captainatomic: The previous JPEGs were using 80% quality, these ones are 90% so they should be a bit better.

Wow that SEVEN HD is nasty stuff! So blocky - what a disgrace.

See what I mean about PRIME being 'cleaner'? There is more detail, check out the keyboard and edges, less jaggies and better detail overall.

@Example 2 - lower right corner - huge difference between the two. How SEVEN can pass that as HD is just beyond beleif, but the difference means they are capable of 1080i just to slack to do so.
