also i have my projector behind my lounge and all my other equipment at the front, if im pointing the remote at the front equipment is the remotes range big enough to turn on the projector as well behind me, a bit of a hard question i know, but i want the whole one button switches on everything going and if it doesnt do that there is no point in me getitng it...if that makes sense.

I think it should work for you as the range/power of the Harmony's IR signal is excellent. For example, with my Samsung DVD player remote, it needs to be pointed exactly at the sensor on the player, but with the Harmony I can point it in the opposite direction and it picks it up fine. Same goes for my PVR's remote.

Likewise with my 525 - runs rings around the output from most of my component specific remotes. In fact it can be too powerful - when it infrequently gets confused (= sat on) and I fire it off into a cushion to regain sync, a bit on infrared code sometimes escapes and things get more confused! Thank goodness for the [Help] button.

Hmmm ... I wonder what brand of TV the neighbour's have :)

Been using the Harmony 360 for a couple of weeks now and here's what I think of it:

Pros

  • Has plenty of buttons on it to fully control any remote
  • Can learn any infrared command and assign it to any button
  • Infrared signal is very strong (it will boost the signal of weaker remotes, and you can point it in any direction)
  • Useful "Activities" button, e.g press "Watch tv" and it changes to the TV's input channel and switches the STB on etc. (this is customisable)
  • Useful "Help" button which corrects setup problems eg. if the TV is on the wrong input channel it will correct this until the TV is on the right channel and then remembers it
  • Useful "Devices" button which lets you change to any device's remote, e.g say you decide you just want to turn one device off for whatever reason, you can do that
  • Lots of customisation options in the software, e.g do you want to automatically switch devices off that are not in use?
  • The Power button turns off all devices (though you can exclude some devices if you want, eg. the TV which I prefer to turn off at the switch)

Cons

  • Buttons are too small, not unique enough to feel your way around it easily (although I'm getting better at this over time) and require too much pressure to press (a bit like mobile phone buttons)
  • There is a slighty delay with the signal between button presses, so it will not be as responsive as your original remote
  • LCD screen is a bit crap (dark green, not a nice bright green like on the screenshots)
  • Minimum requirements are internet, USB2.0 and CD drive
  • Setup is difficult and long-winded (most changes are done via a wizard which takes a while to get through if you dont have broadband)
  • Some settings aren't clarified or dont work properly eg. sequences dont work in Activity mode, the delay settings are ambiguous, the position of the LCD button labels is incorrect if you use more than 1 page worth of commands
  • Sequence length limit is only 5 commands long (I emailed Logitech about this and they said they would to to fix this in the next software/firmware)
  • When you update the software you lose your entire setup and have to program it all again
  • Trivial, but on the Activity screen, it says "Choose an Activi..." instead of "Choose Activity" like in the screenshots

Overall it is a good remote, it takes all the hassle out of juggling multiple remotes, it's just a bit tricky to set up. Definitely worth the purchase, especially if you can get one for $69.

There is a slighty delay with the signal between button presses, so it will not be as responsive as your original remote.

This can be adjusted. Reduce the Inter Key Delay, then Inter Device Delay, and the number of repeats (found under "Troubleshooting -> This device responds too much to some commands")

Some settings aren't clarified or dont work properly eg. sequences dont work in Activity mode, the delay settings are ambiguous, the position of the LCD button labels is incorrect if you use more than 1 page worth of commands

Sequences definitely DO works in Activity mode...in fact that's the only mode they work in.

When you update the software you lose your entire setup and have to program it all again

This definitely shouldn't happen. I have updated my software many times over several years and have never had to re-program anything.

Thanks for that, I was not aware of the number of repeats settings (in the menus it doesnt mention "repeats" anywhere)

In the menus it's under "Troubleshooting - (select device) - show me more problems - tv doesnt appear to receive every command correctly - the device responds too much to some commands"

It is better now but still just a tad slower than the original remotes. Not bad though :)

Sequences definitely DO works in Activity mode...in fact that's the only mode they work in.

By activity mode I mean, when you press the Activities button and it shows your activities on the LCD screen, then the sequence buttons do not work. I just tested this now and they didnt work.

This definitely shouldn't happen. I have updated my software many times over several years and have never had to re-program anything.

Good to know, they must have fixed this because when I went from v5 to v7 software I had to re-program it.

The "repeats" setting is very hard to find...I don't know why they still hide it so much as it's probably one of the most needed adjustments!

By activity mode I mean, when you press the Activities button and it shows your activities on the LCD screen, then the sequence buttons do not work. I just tested this now and they didnt work.

I wouldn't expect sequences to work then. That screen is basically a "between activities" screen and you should only see it when you are selecting a new activity. If it were to send a sequence, how would it know which activity you want to send the sequence for?? :)

I'm not sure...all I know is for a while sequences weren't working at all unless I assigned them to the LCD screen buttons, then some time after that they started working on the face buttons too, and I thought it was due to me not being in the activities mode (but that cant be the case either since the LCD screen buttons only come up when you're in activity mode)

Seriously I was triple checking my sequences and updated the remote like 3 times and they just would not work unless I put them on the LCD buttons.

Thankfully they work now though :)

I went on the harmony site last night to update some commands, and I gotta say that the new interface is an improvement from previous. It seems everytime I go on there they have made some tweaks to improve the GUI. The best bit is the 'sequences', which allows me to switch to the 2nd HDMI input on my Pana PX600 with the press of 1 button - Nice!! B)

i was thinking that this would be a great present for my parents....given how annoyingly proprietary the bose lifestyle systems are, does anyone know if these remotes will be compatible with the bose systems? (oh and believe me, i lobbied against the bose system, but in the end, i just gave up...why believe your son  )

Just did a quick check online and they list Bose as a manufacturer they support. Even if they don't have all the codes, the Harmony's have a learning port whereby you point the original remote towards the Harmony, press the required command on the original and it will transfer to the Harmony. Hasn't failed me yet! B)

I have probably a silly question.........the minister for finance has done something to the 525 and it is now displaying "Safe Mode" and I can't get it to do anything. I tried looking up the online help/FAQ's etc and couldn't find anything on this. Could it perhaps mean the batteries are getting low? If not, how do I resolve the problem??

It depends what model bose it is. Some of them are RF only, in which case you won't be able to control it with any universal remote. Have a look at the manual to see if it can be set up for IR operation. If it can then the Harmony can control it.

Just picked up a harmony xbox 360 remote today from officeworks for $69.95, awesome price. I couldnt jusitfy the extra $30 for the 525 even though it had an additional year of warranty and the fact that i dont have an xbox.

Its a christmas present for the parents so hopefully theyll like it. Im so sick of guiding my mum through the whole power on sequence of mulitple devices with mulitple remotes, this will save me a lot of hassle. Win Win for everyone!

is the xbox version exactly the same as the 525?? what are the differences between the 2? (there's nothing on the logitech website about the xbox version...)

Thanks diesel for the advice on "Safe Mode" - it worked a treat and saved me a lot of bother. You would think that they would include this in their troubleshooting section of FAQ's. If it's there, I couldn't find it!

While I am asking questions....I have a Sony Bravia 46 X series LCD. On the Sony remote there's a button marked i+, I think it's called i-Plate. It gives you information about the video quality, sound, and basic programme information about the current programme and, if you press a second time, the same information for the next programme on that channel. Is there an easy way for me to incorporate this button into the Harmony when I am in "Watch TV" activity mode?

Essentially all Harmony remotes can mirror any command from another remote particularly into the LCD buttons where an appropriate LCD label can be added. In the unlikely event Logitech's database can't provide the i-Plate button's code, then you can also resort to learning mode and record it yourself. It can be displayed in the Activities department or in the Device section, and also added to any number of Activity screens if you think it's a really handy function.

As far as i can tell from reading forums here and elsewhere they are pretty much identical. Besides the obvious difference in appearance and backlight colour they have the same features. 360 button layout is slightly differenent and if i counted correctly it has a few extra buttons for xbox which can be reprogrammed however. 525 has 2 year warranty while 360 version has 1.

If u can get the 360 version from officeworks for $69.95 then id recommend that. I havent had a play around with it nor have i tried the 525 version so i wouldnt know for sure.

Also when i came to office works in sydney cbd (clarence st) yesterday morning they had one left on the shelf. I went around the city to see if i could find a better price but when i came back it was gone and the price tag was taken off. I asked the staff and they had 4 left in lock up so i got mine. I think officeworks may be taking them off the shelves so get in quick because its by far the best price, and just ask if u dont see it on the shelf.

thanks - i've just been back to officeworks and picked up the xbox version. you're right - it has 2 extra buttons, looks slightly different - and the good thing is that it doesn't have any real obvious marks on the remote itself saying it's an xbox version (ie no xbox logo!).

spoke to a guy there who said that they're exactly the same - logitech have stopped making the xbox version which is why it's cheaper and they're trying to get rid of them (even though it's not on sale, whereas the 525 is!). he also said that he thought the 525 can't control an xbox, so in that regard the xbox version is better (in addition to having the 2 extra buttons).

so now i have both - and will return the 525 if the xbox version turns out to be crap (which, based on your experience, shouldn't be the case).
