ssschen 2
Penned the following letter to BigW management.. to be honest, I don't care that much, in 3 months maybe the same or a better TV will have a general RRP of $800. But still, I think it should be pointed out to them, and they shouldn't encouraged to continue the same practice in future. It seems to be a growing trend with them especially. Will be interested in their response. predator Very well penned. I hope you don't mind me "plagiarising" portions of it if I can be bothered to put in a complaint email. I am so sick of stores advertising specials and yet unable to deliver on the very first day of the sale. Like another forum member suggested, it is quite possible perhaps a lot of their own staff bought the TV at further discounted staff price? So I am going to suggest that their management checks their sales records of this TV for this sales period and the Christmas sales period to see how many of their own staff bought this TV at the "discounted" staff price. And if there is only limited quantity to start with, then they should STOP their own freaking staff buying it and let the general public buys the TV instead. Otherwise, they should not advertise it in their catalogue without enough marketable quantity for sales. My sister works in a company where their own staff cannot buy products of limited quantity at discounted staff price in the first month but they certainly can buy anything at catalogued price. fumblus 0
I bought one of these from Big W on Friday (15/6/07). I thought I was going to have the same problems sourcing one of these as others here were having. There are three Big W stores in Newcastle, and the first two I rang had zero units in stock. The Mount Hutton store had three. Three! I considered buying two of them, just because I could. When it comes to Big W, I can recommend you let your fingers do the walking before your rock up to the store. And try the least popular Big W stores first, Charlestown and Jesmond stores are in nice shopping centres, whereas the Mount Hutton location is a bit of a cesspit (sorry Mount Hutton). They delivered it to me for $25. I'm happy with the TV. I saw the ad in the sale catalogue, then listened to the reviews in this forum. First impressions are very positive: the picture is very nice, even with a cheap SD set top box and an indoor rabbit ear aerial. It would be nice to have more than one set of AV inputs (you know, the yellow, red and white ones), but I've hooked my DVD player up with an S-Video cable and piggy-back AV cables for audio. I'm a firm believer in cheap and nasty cabling if it does the job. I tried mucking around with contrast, brightness etc., but then just stuck with the "Mild" picture preset. For sound, I'm just leaving it on the "Movie" equaliser preset. The sound is good, but could be better. I'm about ready to buy a set of surround sound speakers for watching DVDs anyway - I'm sick of movies that don't cater for us 2-channel sound lovers. 5.1 channel-only movies are really irritating when you have to constantly turn down the volume when music is playing, then turn it up again for the dialogue. The black plastic case is nicer than some would have you believe. It isn't all that cheap and nasty. I hooked my PC up with a D-Sub monitor cable just for a test. It's pretty obvious that these things are just big LCD computer monitors - the PC picture was crisp and nice. All up, I am happy with this purchase. I'll ring the warranty providers (Telefix) on Monday to see if they offer an extended warranty. 12 months seems a bit stingy. Let's see how things pan out when this thing gets a few hundred hours of play time under the hood. Edit: Monday - Telefix offers two extra years of warranty for $220. That's a bit rich for my blood. I'll see how I feel about paying this sort of money after the standard 12 months are up. Edited June 18, 2007 by fumblus
Naca-Yoda 0
I'm running s-video for everything. SD STB, DVD player, PS2 and VCR. Looks good. But it certainly shows the limits of DVD as a format. You notice the compression often.

My 2 yr old AWA from Big W had a problem and after having it for 2 mths the local repair agent said that Telefix were unable to supply parts. It wasn't only my TV as they were about to ring 3 other AWA owners with the same news. Fortunately it had a 3 yr warranty so I got a full refund - just beware when purchasing a non-brandname TV. cartman 0
I'll wait a few days before writing in but it is pretty crappy to put the thing in a catalogue if there is virtually no stock. It's more than crappy - it's against the law (Bait advertising.)"A corporation must not... advertise for supply at a specified price, goods... if there are reasonable grounds for believing that the corporation will not be able to offer those goods... for supply at that price for a period that is, and in quantities that are, reasonable, having regard to the nature of the market in which the corporation carries on business, and the nature of the advertisement." Naca-Yoda 0
No wonder my message to the manager was answered so quickly. I was subtle in suggeswting that stock may not have been available at the majority of stores due to the staff purchases/reservations in advance of the sale starting. I had a call that my TV was available and being held for me within a few hours! And rightly so, given the law on this!

I followed your example and filled out the feedback form on the Big W website last Monday, with subtle suggestions. I received a call this morning from the local Manager saying the feedback form had been passed on to him and he had found a couple of the sets and he'd ring me Monday, which is when he expected them to arrive. Surprise ! I got another call tonight from him saying the set had arrived and was waiting there for me to collect it. Tomorrow after work I'll drop by and pick it up. Thanks again Naca-Yoda Cheers Edit: Yayyyy picked it up and about to plug it Edited June 22, 2007 by PetePlus

Naca-Yoda 0
I give Big-W 5 stars for customer service. They are operating as totally responsible big business in response to our disappointment. To clean your set, you want to use a damp, lint free cloth. Chemicals will ruin it. ps. The problems with high pitched buzzing from the set seems to be resolved in the latest stock. Mine is quiet as a mute mouse.

My tv sounds like my house at night: it makes little ticking noises as it heats up and cools down. It must have an aluminium heat exchanger inside. I suppose that 140 Watts has to be dissipated somehow. Otherwise, no buzzing that I can hear, but then my ears may not be as good as they used to be. affable 0
Has anyone with one of these Aiko units worked out if there is a cheap way to improve the sound output? I'm happy with the sound except when watching music videos. I don't want to spend $100's on a surround sound system as I don't watch it enough & don't want the hassle of switching on yet another component just to watch tv. Ideally I'd just like to plug the sound into an existing home stereo system but there seems to be no easy way to get the sound out of the Aiko other than some kind of an audio switcher between all of the inputs such as DVD & PVR. I also havn't found an audio switcher that has 2 outputs as I'd like the sound to still work through the TV if the stereo system is off. Any better ideas? Edited November 5, 2007 by affable
gf1966 0
Yeah the sound is lame, particularly with music. But I figure youve saved a fortune on the set so invest in a small amp/speakers and connect to the audio out on your DVD/STB..... Its amazing this set is over a year old and the 2006 price is still competitive today. Although you can get a similar unit for a few extra $$$ with an inbuilt DTV tuner..... Big deal. Anyway question - 1) Does the Aiko handle 16:9 <-> 4:3 switching with line 23 WSS switching in the video feed. 2) Does it handle Pin 8 16:9 <-> 4:3 switching on the SCART interfaces? Im have a STB that is supposed to handle both but I cant get the set to autoswitch. Thanks

sheldie 0
Sorry I meant - Does Big W still sell these Aiko LCD TV's in 32"??? I brought one of these from Big W in Winston Hills (Sydney) and it was the last one (display model). The staf indicated that they would not be getting any more of them in and that was about 5 months ago.
DR.ZOIDBERG 0
Thanks for that, now its back to the 40" TCL for $999 but I have never heard of TCL so no idea if its good or wait for a brand lcd to come on special
sheldie 0
Has anyone that has one of these sets used a harmony remote? Did you get the codes from the intenet, or did you use the learn feature? As I mentioned above, I got mine as a demo model and as such I do not have a remote or manual for the set. I got a rather cheap universal remote for it, but I am thinking this may have been a mistake.

Garincha 2
Hi I want to wall mount my Aiko but after 2 years of use I'm not sure what I've done with the screws, in fact I can't even remember if there were any screws in the first place. Does anyone know what size the scews are for this set or is there a universal size, was planning on using a generic universal wall mount from Selbys if that's any help. Thanks

Naca-Yoda 0
Has anyone had experience running VGA to the 32" Aiko LCD? I've been playing with the idea of buying a Netbook and using it as a low-def HTPC. I have no idea what the resolution of the Aiko is though via VGA, and don't know if a current generation Netbook can match it either. Any input would be appreciated. Ta, AE ps, My AIKO is still going great btw.
DeboAce61 0
Hi Naca-Yoda - yes my AIKO still going great too - i've had mine for over 2 yrs also and bought it for $800 - it was great as at the time I didn't want to buy a large size screen due to high prices and tv hardware not quite ready - have only just upgraded to a Sony 52W4500 (sweet) anyhow to answer your question until I got the Sony I used my AIKO as a VGA monitor from a media centre PC. The PC video output was High Def (1366 X 768) which the AIKO autodetects. The netbook video out should be able to output that resolution, but not sure - you might have to check the netbook video specs. Re netbook as a HTPC interesting..I guess you would need a Tuner USB card (check the new Leadtek WinFast DTV200 HU) and external disk storage if you wanted to record TV. That's exactly what I wanted to know! The Netbooks now come with 160GB HDDs so even storage is taken care of. My plan is, when not travelling, I could plonk this mini PC in the lounge with power and wired network access allowing me to - boot/resume very quickly (low power usage) - connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse - read media off my office PC - run stereo output into my HT receiver = loungeroom internet and media viewing on our LCD TV Adding an HD tuner dongle is an obvious future enhancement too (possible PVR opp). But without digital-out for audio, I'll probably go with a HD-STB later on.

SCART 2 is only Video/S-Video. Also SCART2 has Audio out so you can run a line out audio to your external speakers from this port. I wanted to run 3xRCA RGB Composite to my SCART 1 connector, however in order to have SCART 1 configured as RGB you need to send a 3 volt signal thru to one of the SCART pins, which my Dreambox DM518 Sat STB doesn't output (because it has 3x RCA no SCART connector). Garincha 2
My trusty Aiko TV has just been replaced with a shiny new 50" plasma, just wondering how much one of these TVs would be worth on ebay or elsewhere? I've just upgraded from the Aiko 32" LCD to Samsung 50" Plasma myself. You would probably get $200 or perhaps a little more on ebay. I'm moving the Aiko into the bedroom and cascading out the Sony CRT.
