Plasma Burn In

Recommended Posts

I'm not one of the 14, but can contribute here. Not sure whether to vote yes or no, given the following...

.

.<Snip>

.

All in all, I was shitting broken glass that I'd done the wrong thing buying a new release (read: expensive) pioneer (read: expensive) plasma (read: dying tech). But now, I honestly think I did the right thing. The picture is absolutely fantastic in all levels of light: from dark brooding scenes in an arthouse flick, through to bright, rapid sports action, it really is just beautiful.

And don't worry about keeping this confidential.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Thanks for that. I got very few responses. Only 2 or 3 in fact. So I'm not the wiser. My local HT salesman keeps pushing Pioneer at me and I've a mate that has the 50 inch and it looks superb. I do like the Panasonics too, especially the black bevel rather than the silver. For me I can see little difference in the quality - ie, They both look superb.

I really wish some more Pioneer owners would vote or explain their 'Yes" votes.

Pretty clear that panasonic panels are fairly good for burn in issues given the size of the sample compared to the others. Fujitsu on the other hand seems to have major issues but that could also be the result of people that spent that much are more likely to complain.

I'd decided to go Panasonic last year, and then saw the 6th gen Pioneer the week before purchasing day. SOLD!!!

To be honest, I couldn't discern much between them. Yeah, the all black bevel (bezel? like a watch?) gives them both a very classy look. Call me shallow (because, basically I am), but I can't believe that some of the better displays (plasma, lcd, the lot) can look so cheap and tacky while they're turned off. The Pio and Pana definitely have a look the others can only dream of.

But, if you're after validation of a Pio love affair, then you'll find me loading up cupid's bow and aiming him your way!

I still don't believe the Pioneer votes!

399 votes is actually 145 real votes.

Of the 145 legitimate votes, there were 42 (29%) with burn-in problems.

However, on a brand by brand, the results of displays that DO have burn-in problems are as follows

Phillips (0 of 1) - 0%

Hitachi (2 of 18) – 11.1%

Panasonic (4 of 34) – 11.8%

Sony (1 of 5) - 20.0%

Fujitsu (5 of 18) – 27.8%

TEAC (3 of 10) – 30.0%

NEC (4 of 13) – 30.8%

LG (5 of 16) – 31.3%

Samsung (1 of 3) - 33.3%

JB Hi Fi (1 of 3) - 33.3%

LG (5 of 16) – 31.3%

Pioneer (9 of 17) – 52.9%

Other (7 of 7) - Meaningless in terms of brand name but have left it in the total.

Other (No) is certainly meaningless because it must be used to poll.

Lyle,

why dont you believe in Pio votes?

I have been monitoring my 506 very closely for the last 2 weeks so that I can cast my vote.

Should image retention be considered as burn in? If so, Pio is not very good as my unit is more than 6 mths old and low contrast but the SBS score & logo are pretty obvious for the last few nights.

Does it go away or is it permanent? I don't know what the official criteria is for "burn in" but if "image retention" is not permanent then I don't feel that it is "burn in". What do you think?
I don't believe the JB HiFi votes

Does JB HiFi really have its own plasma brand?

Apparently! :D

I voted for one of the guys at work. He came to me asking about the terrible image retention his 506 was displaying after the tennis a few months back. At the time the vote was placed it looked like it might be permanent, but after 2 weeks, it faded away. This is not the first time that I have heard about this problem with the Pioneers. Two other people I know have also had similar problems - again, both were 506's and both had long lasting (but in the end temporary) image retention. All three screens were less than 2 months old, and all were displaying the factory settings (like any average user is going to know any different).

Interestingly, when the above guy rang channel (?7 I think) they had obviously had a lot of similar calls! I wonder what brands they were hearing about (not that they would have collected this information).

J.

I cant help but get the feeling that the Pioneers have more of a problem with this than the other brands - I know quite a lot of people with plasmas, and excepting older generation screens, the Pioneers are the only ones that have had this problem.

Anecdotal I know, but enough to steer me away.

It is hard if when you vote you think it was permanent - but several weeks later you find that it has settled. Mind you, this is watching tv with ad breaks that change the image on a regular basis. Not exactly 'demanding' conditions

Yes, very interesting. I wonder if the factory settings are/were "dynamic". It seems many plasma are delivered that way but everyone 'here' seems to know to change that.

Lyle,

If I have to vote and considering of my case only, I would say that "image retention" is "burn in".

Pls count my vote.

Would you believe in Pio votes now?

A little confused, so you are saying for example that 47.8% of Pioneer respondents do not suffer burn in, resulting in 52.3% that do? This would mean that 73.7% of Fujitsu respondents do suffer burn in - this would be majorly dissapointing?

Hey Lyle,

Another quick update:

After having Channel 10 on non-stop for the whole day while watching Bathurst, I noticed a very faint retention of the logo (top right corner in the 4:3 area) later that evening for about the first hour or two after the race coverage had finished. No evidence of the logo the by the end of the night whatsoever...

Cheers,

Aaron

PS - Pioneer PDP436 for anyone else interested
