Correction 98.3 from Speciman Hill is only at 100 w ERP, not 1000. Typo.

Both 96.5 and 106.3 are 1000 w ERP (One at Big Hill Bendigo, the other at Old Jail Castlemaine). 96.5 is definitly in full stereo, i have just checked it. 106.3 however i have no idea. Even just 35km away, Something is Co-Channeling it. The only other thing i know thats on 106.3 is Mixx FM from Colac, i have no idea why i can pick that up (Its some 130kms away and through some unhelpfull terrain).

So i dont know whats up with 106.3 Castlemaine, sorry.

G'day, you seem like a radio savvy person

If you could compare KL FM on 96.5 from Bendigo to 106.3 from Castlemaine, could you diagnose the problem that the Castlemaine transmitter has? The Stereo pilot pops up, but everything is in Mono. But on 96.5 in Bendigo, it's pure Stereo

It was one of my observations while in the area

Most likely the STL feed is Mono and the FM transmitter is generating the stereo pilot (just so you get the stereo light on the tuner).

The station on 106.3 could be Flow FM from the high position of Mt St Leonards, they provide services to remote Australia who can't recieve any commercial radio station in their current location. Apparently, Yarra Valley and Marysville both qualify for that service of Flow FM.

Take 40 Australia, My Generation and specialised programming are part of their schedule

But, the Mono STL Link sounds about right, I'd imagine it wouldnt be a small cost for a community station to invest in

Setting up a good STL can be expensive to do properly (e.g good cables ect.) and if the distance between the tx/rx is long. It could be in mono to reduce noise in a poor STL or they may only be running L+R audio into the STL transmitter (not composite stereo)

On the community front, there's a nice little gem called Bay and Basin FM (BAB) 92.7 which plays 80's hits from way, way left field. It is receivable from coastal Wollongong in the north to Ulladulla in the south. However, being a community station, there are some programs that I would not listen to, such as easy listening and dance music.

From what we experienced of listening to BAB, it is probably one of the best community stations in NSW without a doubt. :D

Has anyone listened to Power FM from Batemans Bay or Bega recently (104.3/102.5)?

I didn't have a chance to listen to them when I was down in the Shoalhaven area recently. Whilst staying there for a couple of days, I was on a day trip to the Jervis Bay area, where I imagine 104.3 Power FM & 105.9 2EC would come through okay on a car radio, especially in around Vincentia & the St Georges Basin area.

I might be going down there in Feb. so I will have a listen.

If & when you do that, then please give us your feedback on Power FM Batemans Bay/Bega & tell us how it compares to 94.9 Power FM. :P

From my limited experience with them, they play lost 80's/90's not heard on any other commercial station (not even Power 94.9).

Interesting. I've not been anywhere on the South Coast, south of Jervis Bay, since January 2000! :P

That was when I was last time listening to Power FM Batemans Bay/Bega quite extensively, along with 2EC.

Speaking of 2EC, I can get its 765AM service from Bega at night, with a bit of interference from 774 ABC Melbourne, and its music is a bit better than 2ST, in which it is a bit less 'easy listening'.

I imagine that in the coastal areas of Wollongong, you would probably get 104.3 Power FM & 105.9 2EC from Batemans Bay during tropo, given that you have a good directional FM antenna pointed south, which would probably be enough to null out 104.1 2DAY & 105.7 JJJ from Sydney. I remember that I could get 103.5 ABC South East from Batemans Bay in Scarborough (between Thirroul & Stanwell Park) on the Astra car radio, probably as a semi-permanent reception.

I wouldn't mind living in around Thirroul & Austinmer, where I would get 92.7 BAB-FM permanently there, with potential tropo reception of Power FM & 2EC from Batemans Bay.

Like Wave FM & 94.9 Power FM/2ST, Power FM/2EC are owned by Grant Broadcasters. They must be a really good company for owning a number of regional commercial radio stations, with lots of localism in the station's programming, as well as playing some 'lost classics'. :P

Last time I was in Batemans Bay (2002), I had listen to 2EC's FM service on 105.9 and the weird thing was only every 2nd song was in full stereo.. the ones in between sounded mono.. Not sure whether this was an isolated thing, but it seemed a bit odd..

Whilst travelling to Batemans Bay, the (in car) 104.3 Power reception was poor around Jervis Bay/Sussex Inlet and only started to improve coming into Milton/Mollymook.. Heading out of Ulladulla towards Batemans Bay the reception was then quite good.

At Bald Hill Lookout (near Stanwell Tops) the Batemans Bay ABC FM services and BAB-FM can be received on a full time basis.. I have only picked up 2EC-FM once (faintly) at that location, and have not received Power 104.3.

I remember at one time in 2003 up here (in Newcastle) I DID pick up Power 104.3 VERY faintly (on an external antenna on my hi-fi - it had to be on 104.35 to avoid splatter from 2DAY). No chance of that now though with Star 104.5 on air at Gosford.

In the direction of Bald Hill (Stanwell Tops), the ERP for the ABC FM services is at 4kW, while the ERP for 104.3 Power FM & 2EC is at 2kW. The maximum ERP for ABC FM services is 40kW, while for 104.3 Power FM/2EC, it's 20kW.

One night in late January 2004, I could get 105.9 2EC at Shellharbour Beachside Tourist Park on the Astra car radio, albeit with splatter by 105.7 JJJ from Sydney.

Power FM Batemans Bay/Bega has a very nice looking website, which can be seen here: http://powerfm.com.au/sthcoast/

It probably looks much nicer than the 94.9 Power FM website.

Power FM's sister station, 2EC, has a very nice looking website too: http://www.2ec.com.au/2007/index.htm

Again, their website is nicer than its Nowra counterpart, 2ST.

I'm sure some of you here remembers the good old days of Star FM (excluding the Central Coast station), when it was owned by DMG.

Whilst it may not be good for local content, the music they played on Star FM in those days was pretty good.

I remember listening to its 105.9 Orange service quite a bit, along with 105.1 2GZ-FM, when I was holidaying in the Central West back in March 2002. I was only about 15 at the time, but I liked the variety of music they played on that station.

Along with 90s & current music, Star FM played plenty of 70s/80s music which included:

"Take On Me" A-Ha

"Don't Bring Me Down" ELO"

"You Can Leave Your Hat On" Joe Cocker

"Shy Boy" Bananarama

"Pass The Dutchie" Musical Youth

"Into The Groove" Madonna

"April Sun In Cuba" Dragon

"Summer Rain" Belinda Carlisle (that came out in 1990, but it's worth including)

"Dance Hall Days" Wang Chung

The next time that I got to listen to Star FM extensively was when I was travelling between Sydney & Victoria in late December 2003/early January 2004. They seemed to have dropped 70s music & the earliest they play is the 80s. I was 17 back then, but I didn't listen to them as much that time, as I was listening mostly to JJJ, as well as more adult music stations (eg. 105.7 The River in Albury).

Can anyone who have listened to Star FM lately, tell us how it sounds like now in the current MRR days? How much 80s music gets played per hour?

The reason I ask is that I have not been in MRR-owned Star FM territory in a long while.

Star FM does not play much 80's music.

Star FM Mt Gambier plays a hour of 90's music between 9-10 am weekdays, the last hour of local broadcasting, each day.

In fact some of the music mentioned above is played on the "Best Music of All Time" branded station, in my case 5SE. In fact a lot of 80's music is played on 5SE.

Couldnt agree with you more there. The local content has always been lacking but the playlist was excelent when Star FM was DMG. I remember one Easter weekend (2003 I think) they had the 4 day 400 (I still have the playlist I printed from their website somewhere here). Best 'countdown' I had ever heard.

Last time I was in Port Mac area in January (I very rarely get to hear other Star FMs unless I tune to Coffs Coast from there) there was no local programming at all (excluding the ads) and the oldest track seemed to be the odd 90s track. Not to mention the usual "dead-air" when theres supposed to be an ad break. The people in these areas deserve better, at least some local content.

If you can find the countdown list for '4 day 400', could you please PM me, or post the list up in this thread?

Thanks in Advance.

I think the reason why Star FM played quite a fair amount of 70s/80s music is because in Albury, where the networked music playlist came from during its DMG days, they were competing with The River, which until 2004, was owned by RG Capital.

I sense that since MRR took ownership of Star FM from DMG's hands, the station has gone downhill. Next time I go to an 'exclusive' MRR territory (ie. not including the Central Coast), I'll probably listen to JJJ, Heritage (2GZ, 2WG, 2MC etc.) or the local community stations. :D

If anyone in Sydney can pick up 107.9FM from Lithgow very well & like a dose of 80s music (like myself), then you might want to listen to the station between 1-2pm weekdays, where they dedicate one hour of music from the 80s. The title of the program is "Lost 80s Lunch", seeing that 80s music isn't played on other hours of the day on that station.

I discovered the program just this afternoon, having thought that it had disappeared for good from 107.9FM on its previous timeslot of 12-1pm.

It falls on the same hour as 94.9 Power FM's "Retro Lunchbox", which only takes up part of the hour from around 1:15 to 1:30pm & with only 3 songs in total, not necessarily strictly limited to the 80s (I've heard early 90s tracks in there sometimes). At my location, I get 107.9FM better than 94.9 Power FM.

From what I heard bits of the program, its a good 80s hour program. :D

I've heard on today's program:

"Always Something There To Remind Me" Naked Eyes

"Sign Your Name" Terence Trent D'Arby

"Funkytown" Lipps Inc

"Antmusic" Adam & the Ants

"Standing On The Outside" Cold Chisel

"West End Girls" Pet Shop Boys

"Midnight Blue" Lou Gramm

"Poison Arrow" ABC

"Abracadabra" Steve Miller Band

There are more, but I discovered it about 20 minutes into the program. In the past, on its previous timeslot, I've heard FM107.9's "Lost 80s Lunch" played "Listening" by Pseudo Echo, "Rock The Casbah" by The Clash & "Chemistry" by Mondo Rock. The program is a real stand-out from its CHR format.

Zoo fm has been discussed on this thread previously. I was wondering, as it's a Bill Caralis owned station, whether some of its daytime feed comes from New FM. I've noticed that Zoo FM's website proclaims 'Ten in a row' during the workday, something that is not a feature of New FM's programming. What about at night? The reason I ask is that at 11 AM yesterday I dxed Zoo from La Perouse (Sydney Eastern suburb). They had local programming on then, with an invitation to join Zoo FM for its 10th b'day celebrations.

When travelling around Dubbo, Zoo would be a better option imo than the Mcdonaldisation station (Star FM), in spite of its ties to BOG.

From what I've read on other threads in this forum, as well as MediaSpy, Zoo FM, at least like its Tamworth equilvalent (FM92.9), is local from 6am to 7pm weeknights. I think it is also local on Saturday mornings (6am-12pm).

At night, Zoo FM takes the Dave Gillies night program, which is heard on BOG's CHR FM stations, including New FM Newcastle.

When travelling around Dubbo, Zoo would be a better option imo than the Mcdonaldisation station (Star FM), in spite of its ties to BOG.

I'm with you on this. :D

I would also listen to Zoo FM's sister station, 2DU, as long as they play music on most of my trip to the area. :P

Probably when around the Bathurst-Orange area, Bathurst-based B-Rock FM & 2BS would get my vote over the Orange-based Mac Bank stations (2GZ & Star FM).

I haven't listened to 2DU in the day for a LONG time. At night, I can easily get it from Oatley on its 1251 khZ frequency (can't get 972 khZ Cobar). However, as the station takes 2SM 'Supernetwork' overnight, it is not worth listening to.

Two things with B-Rock. Firstly, I can get it from Oatley, and thus would not feel refreshed when listening to it. Secondly, B-Rock seems to play more ads than any other commercial station within my listening area  . 2BS also is receivable, albeit weakly, on my car radio system. I can understand you wanting to listen to 2BS, as they play classic hits not heard around Sydney (e.g. 'Your'e so vain'- Carly Simon).

Star FM has totally lost its way. But Macbank needs to preserve its bottom line, so it's not going to get better any time soon. In the early 'noughties', when owned by DMG, the station played a lot of 80's music, the best of it being played at lunchtime (and later 2 pm with the 80's flashback lunch). At that time, travelling to Star FM territory was something to look forward to, as the Sydney market from 2000-2003 was dominated by CHR/modern music stations. Now it is totally the reverse. I would still listen to 2GZ-FM around Orange and the Central Tablelands for a more 'Classic Hits' feel.

I can pick up 2BS quite okay on my Sangean portable in Minto, especially during the day. However, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" is played on Sydney radio, particularly on WS-FM & Vega.

Come to think of it, I would too, as long as they're playing music, which is not the case on Saturday & Sunday afternoons during the NRL season, when they take the "Continuous Call Team".

From the ACMA website:

28 March 2007

New local presence licence condition for regional commercial radio

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has imposed an additional licence condition on regional commercial radio broadcasters. The licence condition requires licensees to keep records of their existing levels of local presence on an ongoing basis and maintain existing levels of local presence in their licence areas in certain circumstances.

The licence condition is part of the new obligations on regional commercial radio licensees introduced by the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Media Ownership) Act 2006 (the Act).

The licence condition requires a licensee affected by a trigger event to maintain the ‘existing level of local presence’. This is defined in terms of the staffing levels and studio and other production facilities that existed in the three-month period before the trigger event. The condition also provides some flexibility for broadcasters in the way that they comply with the local presence requirement.

The commencement date of the licence condition is:

* 1 April 2007 for the record-keeping requirements for all regional commercial radio broadcasters; and

* the proclamation date (to be announced by the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts) for the remaining requirements for trigger event-affected regional commercial radio broadcasters.

A trigger event is a transfer of a licence, formation of a new registrable media group (which includes a commercial radio broadcasting licence) or change of controller of a registrable media group (which includes a commercial radio broadcasting licence).

ACMA has considered representations made by regional commercial radio broadcasters on a proposed licence condition. Significant changes from the proposed licence condition include provision for review, and reduction of the retention period for records from seven to three years.

ACMA has sent a copy of the licence condition to all regional commercial radio licensees. ACMA is also publishing a copy of the licence condition in the Gazette and on ACMA’s website

ACMA is continuing work on other elements of the government’s media reform package which affect regional commercial radio licensees, for example, developing a local content licence condition. Details of the progress on these elements are available on ACMA’s website.

Hi Nathan,

Thought you would have got 2AY Albury during the day as well as night .. ??

It's not that far from Shepparton...

1566 is 3NE in Wangaratta (in case you were wondering)..

2GB Sydney is more of a talk station than music..

What about 1521 2QN up the road in Deniliquin? I remember driving through your town one time and picked up 2QN's FM sister station Classic Rock 102.5, so I thought you would also have been able to get 2QN.

And the only main commercial music station in Qld operating in the 14xx khz bracket is 1476 4ZR at Roma.

It's owned by Macquarie Bank, same mob that owns your 3SR FM and STAR in Shepparton.

Music stations only

I'm the same age as you are & am liking the same thing, regarding AM music stations, so you're not alone.

Here's what AM commercial music stations (excluding Sydney stations) I can get, near Campbelltown, in South-Western Sydney (D = Day, N = Night):

765 2EC - Bega, NSW.....N (can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

882 4BH - Brisbane, QLD.....N (managed to get in okay over 873 2GB splatter)

900 2LT - Lithgow, NSW.......D (at night, it could be a mixture of 2LT, 2LM (Lismore) & 7AD (Devonport))

918 2XL - Cooma, NSW.......N (can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

981 2NM - Muswellbrook, NSW.....D/N (at night, it could co-channel with 3HA Hamilton)

990 4RO - Rockhampton, QLD.....N

999 2ST - Nowra, NSW........D/N (can also get this station on 102.9FM most of the time)

1044 5CS - Port Pirie, SA........N (can co-channel with ABC Local Radio from Muswellbrook)

1053 2CA - Canberra, ACT.....D/N (at night, could sometimes co-channel with an Italian narrowcast station from Brisbane)

1071 Easy Listening - Central Victoria OR Heart - Kingaroy, QLD.....N

1143 2HD - Newcastle, NSW....D/N (at night, can co-channel with 4HI - Emerald, QLD)

1242 3GV - Gippsland, VIC OR 4AK - Darling Downs, QLD...........N (3GV can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

1278 Magic - Melbourne, VIC......N (managed to get in over 1269 2SM splatter)

1323 Cruise - Adelaide, SA.........N (that can change soon when a narrowcast station starts on this frequency in Canberra)

1332 3SH - Swan Hill, VIC..........N (can co-channel with 4BU - Bundaberg, QLD)

1350 2LF - Young, NSW..............N (can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

1368 2GN - Goulburn, NSW.....D/N

1377 3MP - Melbourne, VIC........N

1467 Easy Listening - Mildura, VIC.....N (may cause some splatter from 1476AM's Penrith narrowcast service)

1494 2AY - Albury, NSW............N (can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

1503 2BS - Bathurst, NSW.....D/N (can co-channel with 3KND Melbourne at night)

1521 2QN - Deniliquin, NSW......N

1566 3NE - Wangaratta, VIC.....N (can be received in late afternoon in cooler parts of the year)

Note: With the exception of 2HD, I didn't include AM stations owned by Caralis' Broadcast Operations Group, as they have talk programs at night & don't have party programs on Saturday nights, in which instead they have country music. With the exception of 2LF & 2WG (see above), I also didn't include stations owned by Macquarie Regional Radioworks, because at weeknights (ie. from 6pm/7pm), they have the same programs as 2GO-FM from the Central Coast, which I can get all the time, near Campbelltown.

Listening to AM music commercial radio stations from all around on a Saturday night is great, as you get to hear different Rock 'n' Roll party programs, which is good for some people in Sydney & Adelaide, as not any of their local commercial radio stations does a Rock 'n' Roll party program. Of the AM music commercial radio stations on a Saturday night, 2CA's "Jukebox Saturday Night" would be considered to be the best, as its live & you'll be able to request a song, unlike in most other commerical music radio stations.

The radio I use is the Sangean PR-D3L.

Here in Perth I can hear these commercial regionals

621 Spirit Bunbury

756 RadioWest Margaret River

864 RadioWest Northam

963 RAdioWest Bunbury at night

1116 6 MM Mandurah

1134 RadioWest Collie (at night)

1422 6GS at night

1512 Spirit Mullewa ( near Geraldton) at night.

Funny thing is in the past week South Australia and Victorian AM stations have been coming in strong into Perth at night.

I heard 765 5CC....774 ABC Melbourne..... Unknown stations under 1116 and 1134 ...1161 ABC SA....1260 3SH... 1278 Magic... 1323 was playing music along with a station on 1332...1377 3 MP ...Something under 1422 6GS and could just make out music on 1503.

This is on an AWA/Clarion car stereo running off a 13.8 volt powerpack in the bedroom.

Plus its an AM Stereo model with selectable bandwidth which makes AM listening more enjoyable than on the usual average radio.

It's owned by Macquarie Bank, same mob that owns your 3SR FM and STAR in Shepparton.

hi again

2ay and 3n4 are hard to utne in for me "Hills" i was going to go for a drivr to radi australia and sit under a unnused antenna and if it will give ne great range all i use os a old little Hmv capri

From the ACMA website:

QUOTE

For a list of my receivable radio stations, visit http://www.myspace.com/dxnerd.

Sorry, off-topic post, but AFAIK Cool Country's 88.0MHz and 88.7MHz aren't off-air, rather, they're just running at much lower power. This change is due to ACMA chasing after them for broadcasting way over their permitted power.

I haven't listened to 2DU in the day for a LONG time. At night, I can easily get it from Oatley on its 1251 khZ frequency (can't get 972 khZ Cobar). However, as the station takes 2SM 'Supernetwork' overnight, it is not worth listening to.

I agree with you here.

QUOTE(billybob_chider @ Feb 27 2007, 07:09 PM)

I can understand you wanting to listen to 2BS, as they play classic hits not heard around Sydney (e.g. 'Your'e so vain'- Carly Simon).

I can pick up 2BS quite okay on my Sangean portable in Minto, especially during the day. However, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" is played on Sydney radio, particularly on WS-FM & Vega.

QUOTE(billybob_chider @ Feb 27 2007, 07:09 PM)

Star FM has totally lost its way. But Macbank needs to preserve its bottom line, so it's not going to get better any time soon. In the early 'noughties', when owned by DMG, the station played a lot of 80's music, the best of it being played at lunchtime (and later 2 pm with the 80's flashback lunch). At that time, travelling to Star FM territory was something to look forward to, as the Sydney market from 2000-2003 was dominated by CHR/modern music stations. Now it is totally the reverse.

I agree with you here.

QUOTE(billybob_chider @ Feb 27 2007, 07:09 PM)

I would still listen to 2GZ-FM around Orange and the Central Tablelands for a more 'Classic Hits' feel.

Come to think of it, I would too, as long as they're playing music, which is not the case on Saturday & Sunday afternoons during the NRL season, when they take the "Continuous Call Team".

I would also listen to Zoo FM's sister station, 2DU, as long as they play music on most of my trip to the area.

Probably when around the Bathurst-Orange area, Bathurst-based B-Rock FM & 2BS would get my vote over the Orange-based Mac Bank stations (2GZ & Star FM).

QUOTE(billybob_chider @ Feb 27 2007, 01:05 PM)

When travelling around Dubbo, Zoo would be a better option imo than the Mcdonaldisation station (Star FM), in spite of its ties to BOG.

I'm with you on this.
