anthonysimilion
What's In High Definition This Week Including ABC HD, Nine HD, TEN HD and Seven HD Notice As you've probably noticed, I haven't updated this guide in a while. Please accept my apologies for this - work/life has just been too busy, and browsing the forums just couldn't fit into my to-do list. Consequently, I will have to cease updating this guide indefinitely. Unfortunately I just don't have the time to devote to it, and keep it up to date and on-time. In fact, over the last two months I haven't had time to watch much television at all. But from what I have seen, as usual with Australian free to air, there are constant disappointments as well as surprises. WIN's takeover of Nine Perth has pretty much decimated HD on STW, there has been a severe lack of it, and with lower quality video and audio. The other stations are doing better. With the Olympics around the corner, HD sport should be even more mainstream. Even the ABC is getting in on the HD sport action with the Paralympics. So here we are. Just a year ago we almost hadn't seen a bit of Australian HD Sport. Thanks to TEN, it received the kickstart it needed. Just two years ago, it seemed SD was king, any HD was fantastic. Now we expect it (and with DD5.1 as well! ) Now HD receivers are practically everywhere, buying into HD is now the smart move and the industry is behind several initiatives to make HD the 'standard' (with the Purple Tick and Freeview). Thanks for all your support over the last 2 years. I feel with HDTV, there's still much more to come. See you around the forums! If you would like to start your own guide, please feel free to. _____________________________________________________________________________ This guide is based off Perth programming information, however it is generally the same around the country. This usually occurs because of sporting events. I will do my best to indicate differences when I am aware of them. This guide is complied from Perth programming information, but differences are uncommon and this guide should be applicable to all Nine and Ten HD broadcasts. djOS
Edit: Do you think I should include 576p (Seven 'HD') on the list? Anyone interested in it being included? Only if 7's faux "HD" shows have DD5.1 sound - otherwise it's not worth it for their 576p material.

anthonysimilion
I'm not sure. From what I've heard WIN's HD broadcasts aren't as frequent as Nine in the capital cities, unfortunately.
Crono
I just watched One on One about half an hour ago or so on channel 9 and the HD picture looks incredible. Even up close.
Mathew
Damn, i guess we'll be stuck with Today, Spin City, The Young And The Restless or whatever and What I Like About You, and the occasional HD movie like harry potter and possilby panic room, if it was HD. DavoNogo
I don't think they've shown any movies on WIN yet (nor would you want to, unless you like pixelated images)
Inferno
How do you know if shows are in HD? I'm new to this I can't spot HD pictures straight away from their SD counterparts. Does it say HD along with the show name when they come back from a commercial break or something?
geoffcb1503559619
I'll leave 576p out. I'd still like 576p in - but not if it is just upscaled. Geoff

Geoff Unless the 576p "HD" broadcast has DD5.1 Surround sound there is no Difference between the it and the 576i "SD" version.

Does it say HD along with the show name when they come back from a commercial break or something? On channel Win, the HD channel only turns off from the demo loop when something is shown (same with Southern Cross 10 here & ABC). Channel 7 upscales everything and when something is 'native HD' the logo will change from the SD logo to the HD one. SBS also upscales everything but I don't think they actually show anything in HD. ABC seems to upscale most things after 7:30 except the news (but they may be from a HD source I don't know - but many will argue that ABC & 7's 576p isn't HD, although I can tell a difference when Seven is using a HD source eg. Boston Legal etc). Keen

Yes progressive does give you an improvement in PQ at SD resolutions but it's hardly Hi-Def, merely a more stable image!
50mxe20
I'll have to make a new thread every week for this, as after a few days I am unable to edit the first post (to update the information). It'll be weekly from now on. Do you think it should be every three or four days to keep it fresh in people's minds - or should I stick to weekly? Isn't there something called a "sticky thread" - whatever that is?? I assume it is some sort of editable thread? Or you could ask Coral to give you permission to edit this thread on a more regular basis.
DavoNogo
Yes progressive does give you an improvement in PQ at SD resolutions but it's hardly Hi-Def, merely a more stable image! Stable? Seven use BOB deinterlacing to get a Progressive signal. You'll see logos and text "bob" up and down to verify this.

Keen
Stable? Seven use BOB deinterlacing to get a Progressive signal. You'll see logos and text "bob" up and down to verify this. I understand this but Seven's HD seems to be at a higher bitrate (not sure about this). As beyond what improvements can be made from making it a progressive image, the image quality seems to be better in colour and probably most importantly better in detail (lacking fewer digital artifacts) than the same SD image. So while I agree the resolution is slack, it's still a fair bit better than just changing an 'i' to a 'p'. Keen
DavoNogo
The bitrate Seven uses is still far too low even for 576p. You should see PRiME's 576p, whose bitrate is over 12.57mbps as opposed to Seven's 9.00mbps. This means PRiME's picture will be less pixelated than Seven's and also less compression artifacts. Either way, both Seven SD AND 576p show way too many artifacts and pixelation to begin with, and neither are as apparent on PRiME's 576p. Finally, calling 576p "HD" is a joke.
