A true Rock 'n' Rolla wants the lot

Recommended Posts

Great line form the movie Rock 'n' Rolla. Which pretty much sums up the reason i got a turntable

Ive heard a lot on this forum of how great turntables are, so i thought id better get one and see what the hype is all about. I havent heard the black stuff in a long time since my mums old PYE all-in-one system broke 'accidentally'

So when 4hecks (Rod) offered up a couple of tables for a great price in an easy location i jumped at it. I went around and checked out his sweet set up. Its very laid back and classy compared to my collection of crap everywhere.

The tables on offer were a Dual 1019 and Apan Music Maker. The Dual apparently has a bit of a following if you google it, but there isnt a lot on the Apan. Rod had the Dual connected to a classic amp (forget the name) to match his collection of classic (read old) cars out the front. Sounded great, with some Pink Floyd and i think it was JJ Cale? Needless to say i grabbed that one eagerly

The Apan doesnt work atm, i think it is in need of a belt and some other bits. Hopefully this is where you guys can help me out. I kind of have to get this one working to replace my Mums one that 'accidently' broke

So i got the Dual home and connected it to the only thing with a Phono input, my Yamaha 661 reciever. Which is now conveniently driving my VAF DC 7's. So its not a bad setup from my point of view. it was time to fire this thing up and see if i could figure it out.

I only have 1 record which i bought brand spanking new the night before in anticipation for the days events. It is of course the greatest album ever made Meat Loaf's - Bat Out Of Hell. At first i was worried that it wasnt sitting right. Now dont laugh at this bit. The hole in the middle of the record need expanding with a pencil. Something that may seem simple to the experts of records but for me who has never owned one it was a bit of a set back. A quick call to Rod helped sort that out.

And it was off. Different, totally different. Ive got this album on CD and the record is just amazingly different. Is this how all records sound? because i bloody love it. The instruments are everywhere and right in your face. So much more Saxophone work then i remember, Guitar crunch is huge and the piano sounds amazing. I just sat amazed for the whole record. How can i go back to the other formats now.

sorry for the long story, its just my drawn out way of saying 'look what i got' and thanks.

PS. I retract any previous statements made on this site about rice bubbles and sound quality, i was merely blinded by jealousy. :hiccup

Ha Ha ha! another one bites the DARKSIDE dust. Good on you RaoR:cool:

Get yourself down to Porthole Records (Pt Adelaide) or MrV's at Sema4 (I mention these for you can't be too far away if Rods is close to you) and grab a few LP's. I have the Bat out of hell LP and I think it sounds a little harsh compared to other LP's in my small but growing collection.

Enjoy and thanks for the update.

What LP's are on your list?

Try and get something that you have on CD for comparison maybe!

on the list so far are

Born to Run - The Boss

Tea For The Tillerman - Cat Stevens

Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

IV - led Zeppelin

I wouldnt mind something from Motorhead and Judas Priest for some faster metal stuff

i think the key thing is it has to be an album that you like all the songs on. Thanks for the store recommendations, ill check them out. Im in the city everyday so i might check out some stores there aswell

re: Bat Out of Hell - I agree some parts are a bit harsh, for instance the build on For Crying Out Loud could be done a bit better.

but overall im a very happy guy :hiccup

Hi RnR,

Rumours is one album I am on the look out for, managed to lose mine some how (probably loaned to a "friend") but made do with an open reel tape from it up until my open reel deck bit the dust last year - I have got it on CD, but it's not the same - some tracks are ok but mostly it just lacks that raw energy.

"Tea for the Tillerman" on the other hand, while the LP is great, I found the CD to be just as good (could be just personal).

And just to prove that you've joined the eccentrics, how about some classical?

Boots.

dunno about classical yet, maybe if i find something cheap ill pick it up

I hear something called the 1812 Overture is good, something about cannons?

my two systems are nearly done (just need a sub) so now i can spend my money on the good stuff. Ive downloaded the manuals from the Vinyl Engine for the Dual, just need to do some more looking on the Apan

Excellent work Nathan. Glad you are enjoying the dark side so much.

Rumours and Tea for the Tillerman are often in the secondhand record stores but being great music they have usually been played a lot. I have a good copy of rumours (had I thought you could have borrowed it).

As to the Apan, I remembered which belt I used on it... the same one I have on my old sanusi TT and my AR 'the turntable'. I can take one off and measure it for you. really common size I recall. How are these measured again? ANyone?...do you measure the diameter of the part of the platter it runs on...or the overall length...oh i forgot.

Are you getting anywhere with that other matter? the speakers that haven't shown up matter?

regarding those speakers, no i havent, i got some KEF's for a good price and they do the job well enough. If the others do turn up im sure ill find a use for one pair. Ill kepp onto him as you suggested

You can never have enough speakers as im sure you know

If you could measure that belt it would be great, i suppose it also needs a cartridge

Is there a shop in Adelaide that specialises in all this stuff?

I can do better than that. I had a dig around in my messy study and found an old belt that you can have. It might be a bit tired (stretched) but it will give you a starting point. Also found the receipt for the stylus that is on the cartridge on the Dual. It was purchased early in 2009 and for about half the price of the TT!

As to spare TT parts in Adelaide - nah not much available that I know of. Internet is your friend there. Ebay for a cheap headshell perhaps and maybe a cartidge from here? Actually a WTB thread should turn up a few headshells to suit that arm.

Shall PM re getting the belt and bits to you.

Rod.

Porthole still around are they Grumpy? Last time I went there the building looked like it was being knocked down. Might have a look around on Thursday.

Porthole has been closed for most of this year due to renovations (building strusture problems I think) Guess how long I've been back into the darkside and craving some vinyl?

Not sure of his opening hours, but he's not open every day Paul.

MrV's down the road at Sema4 is open most days. (closed Tuesdays I think)

  • 1 month later...

So I finished my honours thesis on Friday and submitted to the binder

as a reward for my hard efforts i just happpened to drop into VAF on the way back

I picked up their first and only Pro-Ject Debut 3. The reason i went with this is because i got to hear it on my speakers through an AVR (admittedly a lot better than mine) and reviews suggest the Rega doesnt sound that much different

we cranked out some Allman Brothers on the DC X's before changing to the DC 7s, i should have bought those X's when i had the chance.

anyway, it sounded good, lots more bass than the technics that Grumpy gave me. I made the comment that maybe i should just go up another level in TT, so then we hooked up the ProJect 9.1 or whatever its called (a $2000 table) to see what im missing out on.

Unfortunately it had an MC cartridge and the AVR didnt really do it justice, still, Bad to the Bone had a bit more sparkle in the sax.

then Phil came out and insulted my music taste, Meat Loaf is overcompressed and Bruce Springsteen writes stupid lyrics. He suggested some Joan Armtrading (iirc). Ok, so he was right, it did sound a lot better than Bad to the Bone, now ill have to hunt for that album. Not only does he make great speakers, he knows what good music sounds like

But you cant change me, i will continual to play my Meat Loaf

overall it was a great experience the guys all had a bit of a laugh and we got to play with some cool toys. The Debut 3 sounds great at home and theres alwasy the option for cartridge and platter upgrades

I haven't heard the debut 3. I did used to have a P3-24 so I'd be interested to hear a comparison.

But yeah, nothing beats vinyl. The reason I love it is that it feels more real, engaging. you feel like you are a part of something real actually happening! You just dont get that as much with digital reproduction.

damn, missed this thread.

I love reading such things. Looks like you have discovered what many have known for a long time, and others like myself have discovered recently.

The force is very strong with the darkside. You will find you will listen to more and more music then you ever did.
